INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 3. Using the Present Continuous.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for letting others know what someone is doing.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I am hanging out at home."
Lyn: 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.)
Lyn: [slow] 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.)
Eric: The pattern for letting others know what someone is doing has 4 elements. First, a noun, "home."
Lyn: 집 (jip).
Eric: Second, a location marking particle, "in", "at."
Lyn: 에서 (eseo).
Eric: Third, a verb-stem "to play."
Lyn: 놀- (nol).
Eric: And last, a phrase meaning "in the middle of doing something."
Lyn: 고 있어요 (go isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I am hanging out at home."
Lyn: 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.)
[slow] 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.) [normal] 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.)
Eric: By having a noun and a location marking particle, you can specify where the action is taking place. In this sentence, we have the location marking particle...
Lyn: 에서 (eseo)
Eric: which means “at” or “in.”
Lyn: 집에서 놀고 있어요. (jibeseo nolgo isseoyo.)
Eric: To say “In the middle of doing something”, you can say...
Lyn: 고 있어요 (go isseoyo).
Eric: after the verb-stem to let others know what someone is doing.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I am studying at home." First, a noun, "home."
Lyn: 집 (jip).
Eric: Second, a location marking particle, "in", "at."
Lyn: 에서 (eseo).
Eric: Third, a verb-stem "to study."
Lyn: 공부하- (gongbuha-).
Eric: And last, a phrase meaning "in the middle of doing something."
Lyn: 고 있어요 (go isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Lyn: 집에서 공부하고 있어요. (jibeseo gongbuhago isseoyo.) [slow] 집에서 공부하고 있어요. (jibeseo gongbuhago isseoyo.) [normal] 집에서 공부하고 있어요. (jibeseo gongbuhago isseoyo.)
Eric: "I am studying at home."

Eric: How do you say "I am working at home." To give you a hint, a verb-stem meaning "to work" is..
Lyn: 일하- (ilha). [slow] 일하- (ilha). [normal] 일하- (ilha).
Eric: “I am working at home.”

Lyn: 집에서 일하고 있어요. (jibeoseo ilhago isseoyo.) [slow] 집에서 일하고 있어요. (jibeoseo ilhago isseoyo.) [normal] 집에서 일하고 있어요. (jibeoseo ilhago isseoyo.)
