INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 29 - Expressing Intentions.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for the future tense.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "I plan to live in Seoul."
Jaehwi: 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo)
Jaehwi: [slow] 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.)
Dana: The pattern for future tense has 4 elements. First, the noun.
Jaehwi: 서울 (seoul).
Dana: Second, a location particle.
Jaehwi: 에서 (eseo).
Dana: Third, the verb stem “live”.
Jaehwi: 살 (sal).
Dana: And last, you say your intended action or possible state in the near future.
Jaehwi: 려고해요 (ryeogohaeyo).
Dana: All together, we have "I plan to live in Seoul."
Jaehwi: 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.) [slow] 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.) [normal] 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.)
Dana: When you express your intention to do something in the future, use this phrase. You can omit the subject, but you will need a noun and a location particle if you want to mention a particular place. If it is just the action, you can simply use the verb stem and attach…
Jaehwi: 으려고 해요 (euryeogo haeyo).
Dana: Use…
Jaehwi: 으 (eu)
Dana: if the word preceding it ends with a consonant. If the word ends with a vowel,
Jaehwi: 으 (eu) is not needed.
Jaehwi: 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.)
Dana: So remember, just add...
Jaehwi: 으려고 해요 (euryeogo haeyo)
Dana: when you are expressing your intention to do something in the future.
Dana: Here’s another example, meaning "I plan on studying at the library." First, the noun.
Jaehwi: 도서관 (doseogwan).
Dana: Second, the location particle.
Jaehwi: 에서 (eseo).
Dana: Third, the verb stem for “study.”
Jaehwi: 공부하 (gongbuha).
Dana: And last, say your intention for the near future.
Jaehwi: 려고해요 (ryeogohaeyo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 도서관에서 공부하려고 해요. (doseogwaneseo gongbuharyeogo haeyo) [slow] 도서관에서 공부하려고 해요. (doseogwaneseo gongbuharyeogo haeyo) [normal] 도서관에서 공부하려고 해요. (doseogwaneseo gongbuharyeogo haeyo)
Dana: "I plan on studying at the library."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 도서관에서 공부하려고 해요. (doseogwaneseo gongbuharyeogo haeyo)
Dana: How do you say "I plan on dating"? To give you a hint, "date" is...
Jaehwi: 연애 (yeonae). [slow] 연애 (yeonae). [normal] 연애 (yeonae).
Dana: "I plan on dating."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 연애 하려고 해요. (yeonae haryeogo haeyo) [slow] 연애 하려고 해요. (yeonae haryeogo haeyo) [normal] 연애 하려고 해요. (yeonae haryeogo haeyo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 연애 하려고 해요. (yeonae haryeogo haeyo)
REVIEW
Dana: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I'll tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you say it in Korean. Here we go.

[pause]
Jaehwi: 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.)

Outro

Dana: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for the future tense, as in...
Jaehwi: 서울에서 살려고 해요. (seouleseo sallyeogo haeyo.)
Dana: ...meaning "I plan to live in Seoul."
Dana: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out at KoreanClass101.com. Thanks, everyone, and see you next time!
