INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 23. Using the Auxiliary Verb "Could."
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for politely asking someone to do something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "Could you read this please?"
Lyn: 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?)
Lyn: [slow] 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?)
Eric: The pattern for politely asking someone to do something has 4 elements. First, the proper noun, "this."
Lyn: 이거 (igeo).
Eric: Second, the adverb.
Lyn: 좀 (jom).
Eric: This adverb makes your request more polite. Third, the verb stem, "to read."
Lyn: 읽 (ik).
Eric: And last, the phrase "could you?"
Lyn: 어 줄래요 (eo jullaeyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "Could you read this please?"
Lyn: 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?) [slow] 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?) [normal] 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?)
Eric: When you want to ask something politely, you can use the phrase…
Lyn: 어 줄래요 (eo jullaeyo).
Eric: This phrase has the verb...
Lyn: 주다 (juda)
Eric: which means “to give” so it literally means “Could you give”? When the verb-stem ends in the vowel…
Lyn: ㅏ (a) or ㅗ (o)
Eric: You need to use…
Lyn: 아 줄래요? (a jullaeyo)
Eric: Or when it’s a verb ending with…
Lyn: 하다 (hada)
Eric: You need to use…
Lyn: 여 줄래요? (yeo jullaeyo)
Eric: So once again, “Could you read this please?” in Korean is...
Lyn: 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?)
Eric: So remember that to make a polite request to someone, make sure to add the verb-stem and the phrase...
Lyn: 어 줄래요 (eo jullaeyo)?
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Could you find that please?" First, the proper noun, "that."
Lyn: 그거 (geugeo).
Eric: Second, the adverb that makes the request more polite.
Lyn: 좀 (jom).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to find."
Lyn: 찾 (chat).
Eric: And last, the phrase "could you?"
Lyn: 아 줄래요 (a jullaeyo).
Eric: Note that we used this form because the verb-stem has the vowel…
Lyn: ㅏ (a)
Eric: Altogether, we have...
Lyn: 그거 좀 찾아 줄래요? (geugeo jom chaja jullaeyo?) [slow] 그거 좀 찾아 줄래요? (geugeo jom chaja jullaeyo?) [normal] 그거 좀 찾아 줄래요? (geugeo jom chaja jullaeyo?)
Eric: "Could you find that please?"
[pause]
Lyn: 그거 좀 찾아 줄래요? (geugeo jom chaja jullaeyo?)
Eric: How do you say - "Could you please turn that on over there?" To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to turn" is...
Lyn: 켜 (kyeo). [slow] 켜 (kyeo). [normal] 켜 (kyeo).
Eric: "Could you please turn that on over there?"
[pause]
Lyn: 저거 좀 켜 줄래요? (jeogeo jom kyeo jullaeyo?) [slow] 저거 좀 켜 줄래요? (jeogeo jom kyeo jullaeyo?) [normal] 저거 좀 켜 줄래요? (jeogeo jom kyeo jullaeyo?)
[pause]
Lyn: 저거 좀 켜 줄래요? (jeogeo jom kyeo jullaeyo?)
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go.
Eric: "Could you read this please?"
[pause]
Lyn: 이거 좀 읽어 줄래요? (igeo jom ilgeo jullaeyo?)
