INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 21. Talking About the Past.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about something in the past.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I met a friend last week."
Lyn: ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.)
Lyn: [slow] ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.)
Eric: The pattern for talking about something in the past has 4 elements. First, the phrase, "last week."
Lyn: ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— (jinan jue).
Eric: Second, the phrase "friend." as an object
Lyn: ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ (chingureul).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to meet."
Lyn: ๋งŒ๋‚˜ (manna).
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did."
Lyn: ์•˜์–ด์š” (asseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I met a friend last week."
Lyn: ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) [slow] ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) [normal] ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.)
Eric: Since you are talking about an event in the past, make sure to use the sentence-endingโ€ฆ
Lyn: ์•˜์–ด์š” (asseoyo.)
Eric: which switches the verb into the past-tense. You can use this ending when the last vowel in the verb-stem ends withโ€ฆ
Lyn: ใ…(a) or ใ…—(o)
Eric: If the last vowel in the verb-stem is not one of these, you need to use...
Lyn: ์—ˆ์–ด์š” (eosseoyo.)
Eric: Or for the verbs ending with...
Lyn: ํ•˜๋‹ค (hada)
Eric: For exampleโ€ฆ
Lyn: ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•˜๋‹ค (gongbuhada)
Eric: meaning โ€œto studyโ€, you need to use...
Lyn: ์˜€์–ด์š” (yeoseyo)
Eric: If you are not sure how to use them correctly, make sure to check the lesson notes.
Lyn: ์ง€๋‚œ ์ฃผ์— ์นœ๊ตฌ๋ฅผ ๋งŒ๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.)
Eric: So remember that to talk about something in the past, simply use the appropriate sentence ending
Lyn: ์•˜์–ด์š” (asseoyo) ์—ˆ์–ด์š” (eosseoyo) or ์˜€์–ด์š” (yeoseyo)
Eric: after the verb stem.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I ate lunch at 1 o'clock." First, the phrase, "at 1 o'clock."
Lyn: 1์‹œ์— (hansie).
Eric: Second, the noun "lunch." as an object
Lyn: ์ ์‹ฌ์„ (jeomsimeul).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to eat."
Lyn: ๋จน (meok).
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did."
Lyn: ์—ˆ์–ด์š” (eosseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: ํ•œ ์‹œ์— ์ ์‹ฌ์„ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”. (han sie jeomsimeul meogeosseoyo.) [slow] ํ•œ ์‹œ์— ์ ์‹ฌ์„ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”. (han sie jeomsimeul meogeosseoyo.) [normal] ํ•œ ์‹œ์— ์ ์‹ฌ์„ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”. (han sie jeomsimeul meogeosseoyo.)
Eric: "I ate lunch at 1 o'clock."
[pause]
Lyn: ํ•œ ์‹œ์— ์ ์‹ฌ์„ ๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”. (han sie jeomsimeul meogeosseoyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I saw a movie on Sunday"? To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to see" is...
Lyn: ๋ณด (bo). [slow] ๋ณด (bo). [normal] ๋ณด (bo).
Eric: "I saw a movie on Sunday."
[pause]
Lyn: ์ผ์š”์ผ์— ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ดค์–ด์š”. (Iryoire yeonghwareul bwasseoyo.) [slow] ์ผ์š”์ผ์— ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ดค์–ด์š”. (Iryoire yeonghwareul bwasseoyo.) [normal] ์ผ์š”์ผ์— ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ดค์–ด์š”. (Iryoire yeonghwareul bwasseoyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: ์ผ์š”์ผ์— ์˜ํ™”๋ฅผ ๋ดค์–ด์š”. (Iryoire yeonghwareul bwasseoyo.)
