INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 19. Talking About the Future.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something in the future.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I will study Korean quickly."
Lyn: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Lyn: [slow] ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: The pattern for describing something in the future has 4 elements. First, the adverb, "fast."
Lyn: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ (ppalli).
Eric: Second, the noun, "Korean."
Lyn: ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด (hangugeo).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to study."
Lyn: ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•˜ (gongbuha).
Eric: And last, the phrase, "will", "am going to."
Lyn: ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (l geoyeyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I will study Korean quickly."
Lyn: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.) [slow] ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.) [normal] ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: To say what will happen in the future, simply say the verb stem plus
Lyn: ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (l geoyeyo).
Eric: For example with the verb-stem
Lyn: ๊ฐ€ (ga)
Eric: meaning "to go." If you put the phrase...
Lyn: ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (l geoyeyo)
Eric: after the verb-stem and say
Lyn: ๊ฐˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (gal geoyeyo).
Eric: It means โ€œIโ€™ll goโ€ or โ€œIโ€™m going to go.โ€ When the verb-stem ends in a consonant, you need to addโ€ฆ
Lyn: ์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (eul geoyeyo).
Eric: โ€ฆ instead. To add extra information, you can also add an adverb in the beginning to tell when something will happen.
Lyn: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: So remember to use the sentence ending
Lyn: ใ„น(์„) ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (l (eul) geoyeyo)
Eric: after a verb-stem to say what will happen in the future.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I will ride a bike slowly." First, the adverb, "slowly."
Lyn: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ (cheoncheonhi).
Eric: Second, the noun, "bicycle."
Lyn: ์ž์ „๊ฑฐ (jajeongeo).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to ride."
Lyn: ํƒ€ (ta).
Eric: And last, the phrase, "will" or "am going to."
Lyn: ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (l geoyeyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ์ž์ „๊ฑฐ ํƒˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.) [slow] ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ์ž์ „๊ฑฐ ํƒˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.) [normal] ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ์ž์ „๊ฑฐ ํƒˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.)
Eric: "I will ride a bike slowly."
[pause]
Lyn: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ์ž์ „๊ฑฐ ํƒˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I will eat the rice slowly"? To give you a hint, the verb-stem, "to eat" is...
Lyn: ๋จน (meok). [slow] ๋จน (meok). [normal] ๋จน (meok).
Eric: "I will eat the rice slowly."
[pause]
Lyn: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.) [slow] ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.) [normal] ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: ์ฒœ์ฒœํžˆ ๋ฐฅ ๋จน์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.)

Outro

Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for describing something in the future, as in...
Lyn: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: meaning "I will study Korean quickly."
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on KoreanClass101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
Lyn: ๊ทธ๋Ÿผ ๋‹ค์Œ ์‹œ๊ฐ„์— ๋งŒ๋‚˜์š”! (Geureom daeum sigane mannayo!)
