| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting someone to refrain from doing something. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "Do not smoke indoors." |
| Lyn: 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) |
| Lyn: [slow] 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) |
| Eric: The pattern for requesting someone to refrain from doing something has 4 elements. First, the phrase "indoor, inside a room." |
| Lyn: 실내에서 (sillaeeseo). |
| Eric: Second, the noun, "cigarette." |
| Lyn: 담배 (dambae). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to smoke." |
| Lyn: 피 (pi). |
| Eric: And last, the phrase "please do not." |
| Lyn: 지 마세요 (ji maseyo). |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "Do not smoke indoors." |
| Lyn: 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) [slow] 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillae-eseo dambae piji maseyo.) [normal] 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) |

| Eric: at the end of the sentence. To specify which action to refrain from, you just need to put the verb stem in front of |
| Lyn: -지 마세요 (-ji maseyo). |
| Eric: Therefore, you can say “Don’t smoke” as in… |
| Lyn: 피지 마세요. (piji maseyo.) |
| Eric: Also, you can also add a location at the beginning as we have in the example. |
| Lyn: 실내에서 담배 피지 마세요. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) |
| Eric: So remember that to request someone to refrain from doing something, simply say the verb stem plus |
| Lyn: -지 마세요 (-ji maseyo). |
| Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Do not eat ramen in the classroom." First, the phrase "in a classroom." |
| Lyn: 교실에서 (gyosireseo). |
| Eric: Second, the noun, "ramen." |
| Lyn: 라면 (ramyeon). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to eat." |
| Lyn: 먹 (meok). |
| Eric: And last, the phrase "please do not." |
| Lyn: 지 마세요 (ji maseyo). |
