INTRODUCTION |
Mihyeon: ์๋
ํ์ธ์. ๋ฏธํ์
๋๋ค. |
Junsu: Hi everyone. I am Junsu. |
Hyunwoo: And hi, I am Hyunwoo. I Am In The Middle Of Cooking. ๋ฏธํ์จ, ์๋ฆฌ ์ข์ํ์ธ์? |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ์ข์ํ๋ ํธ์ด์์. |
Hyunwoo: What can you make? |
Mihyeon: ์...๋์ฅ์ฐ๊ฐ, ๊น์น์ฐ๊ฐ ์ ๋ง๋ค์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Wow! You know ๊น์น์ฐ๊ฐ and ๋์ฅ์ฐ๊ฐ are the two most common dishes in the Korean diet but itโs really difficult to be really good at making them. Donโt you think Junsu? |
Junsu: Yeah I am always curious about how my mom makes this stuff. It tastes really good but I canโt make them at all. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทธ ๊น์นํ๊ณ ๋์ฅ์ ๋ง์ด ๊ฐ์ฅ ์ค์ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: Aha there is the secret. |
Junsu: The taste of the ingredients is what matters the most. |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ ๋ฏธํ์จ๋ if a friend calls you when you are in the middle of cooking, do you pick up the phone or ignore it? |
Mihyeon: ์...์ ๋ ์ ํ๋ฅผ ๋ฐ์์. |
Hyunwoo: And what about the cooking that you were doing? |
Mihyeon: ์ง๊ธ ์๋ฆฌ ์ค์ด๋๊น ์ด๋ฐ๊ฐ ์ ํํ ๊ฒ๋ผ๊ณ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํด์. |
Hyunwoo: Aha I see and Junsu what do you do in the same kind of situation? |
Junsu: Well itโs quite simple. I donโt cook. So no โ no such experience for me. |
Hyunwoo: Okay simple enough and what Mihyeon says to her friend when she was in the middle of cooking is what we are going to learn to say today but before we go into todayโs lesson, letโs review. You know I love reviews right. So what kind of grammar pattern did we learn last time? |
Junsu: We learned how to say an assumption or a supposition and the question version was ์๊น and the answer was ์ ๊ฑฐ์ผ. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ฏธํ์จ, ์ง๋ ์๊ฐ์ ๋ฐฐ์ด ๊ฒ์ ์ฌ๋๋ค์ด ๊ธฐ์ตํ ๊น์? |
Mihyeon: ๊ธฐ์ตํ ๊ฑฐ์์. |
Hyunwoo: ํ์คํด์? ์ ๋ง ๊ธฐ์ตํ ๊น์? |
Mihyeon: ์ ๋ listener ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ๋ค์ ๋ฏฟ์ต๋๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: I believe in our listeners too. And if you are looking for ways to remember things better, I think it will be a very good idea to check out the grammar questions in our learning center. After youโve listened to a lesson and you listen to the review track, you can go to the learning center and answer the grammar content and vocabulary questions which will help you remember the things that we studied together much, much better. |
Junsu: And as we mentioned a while ago, we are going to learn how to say you are in the middle of doing something. And todayโs conversation is a new set from the last one and Mihyeon, so who is this conversation between and what is it about? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah bad timing right but these things seem to happen quite often. |
Mihyeon: ์ ๋ง ์ด๋ฐ ์ผ์ด ์์ฃผ ์์ด์. |
Junsu: So what kind of situation have you been in? |
Mihyeon: ์ด์ํ๊ฒ ์ค์๋ฅผ ํ๋ฌ ๊ฐ๋ฉด ํญ์ ์ ํ๊ฐ ์์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah me too. I always get a phone call or two when I am in the shower. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทธ๋์ ์ ๋ ์ ํ์ฌ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์ผ๋ฉด ์ค์ํ ๋ ์ ํ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ๊ฐ์ง๊ณ ๋ค์ด๊ฐ์. |
Junsu: And you talk while you are showering? |
Like something really important and just like me unexplained, in todayโs dialogue, ์ง์ค and ์๋ฏผ are not in such good timing with each other. So ํ๋ฒ ๋ค์ด ๋ณผ๊น์? |
Junsu: ๋ค. ๋ค์ด ๋ณด์์ฃ . |
DIALOGUE |

(8)์ง์ค: ๊ทธ๋ ์์์ด. ๋์ค์ ์ ํํ ๊ป. |

๋ฃ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ! |
(3)Jiyun: I'm in the middle of taking a class right now! |
(4)์๋ฏผ: ์. ์ ๋ง? |
(4)Seokmin: Oh, really? |
(5)์ง์ค: ๋ด๊ฐ ๋์ค์ ์ ํํ ๊ฒ. |
(5)Jiyun: I'll call you later. |
(6)์ง์ค: (์ ์ ํ) ์์
๋๋ฌ์ด! ์ ์ ํํ์ด? |
(6)Jiyun: (a while later) The class is over! Why did you call? |
(7)์๋ฏผ: ์. ๊ทธ๋ฅ. ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ ๋ ์ง๊ธ ์๋ฅด๋ฐ์ดํธ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ. ๋ฐ๋น . |

(9)์๋ฏผ: ์. ๋์ค์ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ์. |
(9)Seokmin: Okay. Let's talk later. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Hyunwoo: ์ค์์จ, ๋ฏธํ์จ๋ ์ค์ํ ๋์๋ ์ ํ๊ฐ ์ค๋ฉด ๋ฐ๋๋ค๊ณ ํ๋๋ฐ what do you do when you get a phone call when you are very busy? |
Junsu: Actually I am quite the opposite. I donโt answer. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah thatโs very convenient but what if the same person keeps calling you again and again and then you finally pick up the phone and the person asks you, why didnโt you answer the phone? |
Junsu: I just tell them I was in the middle of doing something important. |
Hyunwoo: And how would you say that in Korean? |
Junsu: ์ ์ข ์ค์ํ ์ผ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: ์ข ์ค์ํ ์ผ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์์ด์. Okay so I have a question for everybody. You are listening to KoreanClass101.comโs wonderful lessons and you get a phone call from somebody and you want to continue listening to Mihyeonโs beautiful voice and Junsuโs intelligent voice. Then what do you say to the person who is calling. Try saying this in Korean and please write it in the comments section. Mihyeon and Junsu will be very, very pleased. And they will work harder to help you with your Korean. Okay so letโs get into todayโs vocabulary words. ์ค๋ ๋จ์ด๋ค ๋ณด์ค๊น์? |
VOCAB LIST |
Hyunwoo: So whatโs the first word? |
Mihyeon: ์ ํํ๋ค |
Junsu: ์ ํํ๋ค |
Mihyeon: ์ ํํ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ ํํ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Yeah in Korean, we say ๋ฐ๋ฅด๋ฅด๋ฅด๋ฆ instead of ring, ring, ring. |
Junsu: And as you can see, this is a ํ๋ค verb and ํ๋ค can be connected with nouns and become a verb and another verb that means the same thing as ์ ํํ๋ค is ์ ํ๋ฅผ ๊ฑธ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah thatโs right. If you want to be more ๊ตฌ์ฒด์ more specific ๋ ๊ตฌ์ฒด์ ์ผ๋ก ๋งํ๊ณ ์ถ์ผ๋ฉด, you can use the verb ๊ฑธ๋ค instead of just ํ๋ค. ๊ฑธ๋ค in Korean has a lot of meanings but ๋ฏธํ์จ what meaning comes to your mind first when you think of the verb ๊ฑธ๋ค? |
Mihyeon: ์ท์ ๊ฑธ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ง์์. ์ท์ ๊ฑธ๋ค. It means to hang up your clothes. ๊ทธ๋์ when you think about it, itโs actually the opposite when it comes to the phone. So it doesnโt mean hang up the phone. It means to โ you hang your phone on the line โ on to the line and you go online. So you are on the phone. So it means to dial a phone number. So try to remember that image if it will help you remember the meaning of this verb but here ์ง์ค said ์ ํํ ๊ฒ which is perfectly fine too. ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋ฉด ๋ฏธํ์จ ์ ํํ๋ค์ ๋ช ๊ฐ์ง ์๋ฌธ์ ๋ค์ด ์ฃผ์๊ฒ ์ด์? |
Mihyeon: ์ด๋ฐ๊ฐ ์ ํํ ๊ฒ์. |
Junsu: I will call you later. |
Mihyeon: ์ ํ ์๋ชป ๊ฑธ์์ต๋๋ค. |
Junsu: You dialed the wrong number. |
Mihyeon: ๋ํํ
15๋ถ ํ์ ์ ํํด ์ค. |
Junsu: Call me 15 minutes later. |
Hyunwoo: It sounds like a line from a TV drama. You have this blind date that you donโt want to go to and first you go in and then you get this phone call telling you about an urgent accident and you can get out of there. |
Junsu: It sounds like you have some experience. |
Mihyeon: Umm.. |
Hyunwoo: Of using that line. |
Junsu: Well but I am sure itโs the other way around. |
Hyunwoo: ์, ๋์ด๊ฐ๊ณ ์. ๋ค์ ๋์ค๋ ๋จ์ด๋ ํ๋ค ๋์ฌ์์. ํ๋ค verb. ๋ฏธํ์จ, ๋ค์ ๋จ์ด๋ ๋ญ์ฃ ? |
Mihyeon: ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค |
Junsu: ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค |
Mihyeon: ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Junsu: And what does this word mean? |
Mihyeon: ๋งํ๋คํ๊ณ ๋น์ทํด์. |
Junsu: It means to talk. |
Hyunwoo: And ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ what does it mean? |
Junsu: ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ actually means a story but ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค tends to mean just to talk. |
Hyunwoo: How do you say to tell a story? |
Junsu: ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ํด ์ฃผ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: So that ํด ์ฃผ๋ค is you give doing something. As you know, ์ฃผ๋ค means to give something to somebody and ํด ์ฃผ๋ค means to do something for someone. So ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ํด ์ฃผ๋ค means to tell a story. So you talk for the sake of others to give information through the story. So ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ๋ฅผ ํด ์ฃผ๋ค and ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค are a little bit different. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ๋ค๋ ์๊ธฐํ๋ค๋ผ๊ณ ๋ ๋ง์ด ์๊ธฐํด์. |
Junsu: Yeah it seems so since youโve used it as well. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah in the exact same sentence, she said ์๊ธฐํ๋ค๋ผ๊ณ ์๊ธฐํด์. So it means to say or talk but ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ is three syllables and people tend to say it in two syllables as ์๊ธฐ. |
Mihyeon: ์๊ธฐ |
Junsu: ์๊ธฐ |
Hyunwoo: And be careful not to get confused with the pronunciation of the word for baby. |
Mihyeon: ์ ๊ธฐ |
Junsu: ์ ๊ธฐ |
Hyunwoo: ์ ๊ธฐ. The dictionary form of this noun is |
Mihyeon: ์๊ธฐ |
Hyunwoo: But in colloquial speech, itโs often |
Mihyeon: ์ ๊ธฐ |
Hyunwoo: And ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ is |
Mihyeon: ์๊ธฐ |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค์ ํ ๋ฒ๋ง์. |
Mihyeon: ์๊ธฐ, ์ ๊ธฐ, ์ด์ผ๊ธฐ, ์๊ธฐ. |
Hyunwoo: Okay ๋ค์ ๋จ์ด ๋ณผ๊น์? Well this word is not so much a very big word or independent word, but itโs combined with other words to mean a lot of things but all these meanings have one common ground. What is it Junsu? |
Junsu: Yeah the next word is ์ค which is middle, center or medium. |
Mihyeon: ์๋ฅผ ๋ค์ด์ ์ฌ๋ฌ๋ถ ์คํ๊ต ์์์ฃ ? |
Junsu: Middle school. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ์ฌ๊ธฐ ์คํ๊ต์ ์ค์ด ๋ฐ๋ก ์ด ๋ป์ด์์. |
Junsu: Yeah so ์ค means middle. So ์คํ๊ต is middle school. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์ฐ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ์ฌ์ด์ฆ๋ฅผ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ ๋ ๋, ์ค, ์๋ผ๊ณ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํด์. |
Junsu: Yeah like just like in English when you use large, medium and small for sizes. |
Mihyeon: ์ค์์จ๋ ํฐ์
์ธ ๋ฌด์จ ์ฌ์ด์ฆ ์
์ด์? |
Junsu: Well usually small or x-small. |
Mihyeon: ์ค...์ ๋ ์ค๊ฐ ์ฌ์ด์ฆ ์
์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and that ์ค๊ฐ is also composed of ์ค and ์ค and ์ค means middle, ๊ฐ means between. So ์ค๊ฐ is between. So itโs a medium size that you are wearing. Very good examples and this meaning is also applied to the grammar pattern that we are going to introduce in todayโs grammar point. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: ์ฐ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ๋ฐฉ๊ธ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ ๊ฒ์ฒ๋ผ ์ค means middle, center, medium ๊ทธ๋์ something, something ๋ ์ค์ด๋ค means you are in the middle of doing something. Junsu how is this pattern constructed? |
Junsu: You take the verb stem and add ๋ ์ค์ด๋ค and you should keep in mind that it doesnโt matter whether the verb stem ends in a consonant or a vowel. You can simply put ๋ ์ค์ด๋ค to the verb stem. |
Hyunwoo: Thatโs right. How was it used in todayโs dialogue? ๋ฏธํ์จ, ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋๋ตํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. ๋ญ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์์? |
Mihyeon: ์ ์ง๊ธ ๋ํ ์ฐพ๋ ์ค์ด์์. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ์๊ฒ ์ด์. So how was it used in todayโs dialogue? |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ์ฐพ์์ต๋๋ค. ์ง์ค์ด๊ฐ โ๋ ์์
๋ฃ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ!โ๋ผ๊ณ ์ด์ผ๊ธฐํ์ด์. |
Junsu: Jiyun said I am in the middle of taking a class. |
Mihyeon: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์ ์ ํ์์๋ฏผ์ด๊ฐ โ๋ ์ง๊ธ ์๋ฅด๋ฐ์ดํธ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ.โ๋ผ๊ณ ๋งํ์ด์. |
Junsu: And Seokmin said, I am in the middle of doing my part time job. |
Hyunwoo: Yes and whatโs convenient about this grammar pattern is that you can actually drop the ๋ part and use ์ค์ด๋ค only with nouns and it means the same thing. So Jiyun said, ๋ ์์
๋ฃ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ but she also could have said. |
Mihyeon: ๋ ์์
์ค์ด์ผ. |
Hyunwoo: ๋ ์ง๊ธ ์๋ฅด๋ฐ์ดํธ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์ผ but he could have said |
Junsu: ๋ ์ง๊ธ ์๋ฅด๋ฐ์ดํธ ์ค์ด์ผ. |
Hyunwoo: Yes more economical. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ๊ทธ๋ฐ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์. |
Junsu: Yeah and if itโs possible to replace the verb with the noun, people usually use just the noun. |
Hyunwoo: With ์ค์ด๋ค right? |
Junsu: Right. |
Hyunwoo: So ๋ฏธํ์จ, ์ฐ๋ฆฌ๋ ์ง๊ธ ๋ญ ํ๋ ์ค์ด์ฃ ? |
Mihyeon: ๋
น์ํ๋ ์ค์ด์์. |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ๋ ์งง๊ฒ ๋งํ๋ฉด? |
Mihyeon: ๋
น์ ์ค์ด์์. |
Hyunwoo: The weather is really hot outside and itโs even hotter in the studio right now. So ์ง๊ธ ๋ฏธํ์จ ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์ค์์จ๋ ๋์ ํ๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์๋ ์ค์ด์์. They are sweating. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค, ๋๋ฌด ๋์์. |
Outro
|
Hyunwoo: So we will be back next week and see you, Junsu. |
Junsu: See you everyone. |
Mihyeon: ๋ค. ์๋
ํ ๊ณ์ธ์. |
Hyunwoo: Okay, bye. |
