INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: My name is Hyunwoo. Use Korean To Make Your Wishes Come True.
Mihyeon: 우와 벌써 마지막 레슨이에요?
Hyunwoo: 네. This is a final lesson. 아쉬워요.
Mihyeon: 네, 저도.
Hyunwoo: But I hope our listeners enjoyed the lower intermediate lessons so far.
Mihyeon: 네, 저도요.
Hyunwoo: But it’s not over yet. We have a very interesting conversation and a very, very important grammar point in today’s lesson as well.
Mihyeon: 좋아요. 오늘 뭐 배울 거예요?
Hyunwoo: Today we would learn how to say I wish. We learned one way to say this already. Something, something 기를 바라다 but this one is less direct and more colloquial though you can’t say one of them is better than the other but today’s pattern is really, really common and it’s…
Mihyeon: 았/었/였으면 좋겠다
Hyunwoo: Okay let’s get right into the dialogue. Today’s dialogue is the second half of the conversation between the shocked doctor and the crazy, brave patient.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
(1)진우: 스카이 다이빙을 하는데... 낙하산을 안 가져 가는 바람에...
(1)Jinu: I was skydiving.. but because I didn't take my parachute..
(2)의사: 네?? 그런데 어떻게 살았어요?
(2)Doctor: Huh?? Then how did you live?
(3)진우: 몰라요. 운이 좋았어요.
(3)Jinu: I don't know. I was lucky.
(4)의사: 네? 휴... 빨리 나았으면 좋겠어요.
(4)Doctor: What? Sigh... I hope you get better soon.
(5)진우: 저두요.
(5)Jinu: Me too.
(6)의사: 당분간 휴식을 취하세요.
(6)Doctor: Get some rest for a while.
(7)진우: 아, 내일도 스카이 다이빙 해야 되는데..
(7)Jinu: Oh, but I have to go skydiving again tomorrow..
(8)의사: 네? 안 하셨으면 좋겠는데요…
(8)Doctor: Pardon? I wish you wouldn't.
(9)진우: 왜요?
(9)Jinu: How come?
(10)의사: 다쳐요!!
(10)Doctor: You'll get hurt!!
(11)진우: 에이. 걱정 마세요. 낙하산 꼭 가져 갈게요.
(11)Jinu: Hey, don't worry. I'll take my parachute for sure.
(12)의사: (당황하며) 아... 네... 꼭 그러길 바랄게요.
(12)Doctor: (bewildered) Uh.. Yes I really hope you do.
(13)진우: 같이 가실래요?
(13)Jinu: Would you like to come along?
(14)의사: 네!? 아니요. 아니요! 그럼 안녕히 가세요. 자 다음 손님 들어오세요.
(14)Doctor: What? No. No! Goodbye then. Next patient please!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: I don’t know anybody around me who does skydiving as a hobby but I don’t think anyone would go skydiving again with broken legs.
Mihyeon: 네, 그래서 의사 선생님이 가지 말라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah she was advising not to go by saying, I wish you wouldn’t go. We will study exactly what she said in the grammar section and for now, let’s go to the vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 운
Hyunwoo: Luck.
Mihyeon: 운 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 운 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: What’s good luck?
Mihyeon: 행운
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I wish you good luck?
Mihyeon: 행운을 빌어요. 친구한테는 어...행운을 빌어 아니면 행운을 빈다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and you can also say that your luck is good or bad. In other words, you are lucky or unlucky by saying 운이 좋다 or 운이 나쁘다 good or bad. So how do you say I was lucky?
Mihyeon: 운이 좋았어요.
Hyunwoo: And I was unlucky.
Mihyeon: 운이 나빴어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. 다음 단어는?
Mihyeon: 낫다
Hyunwoo: To recover, to heal.
Mihyeon: 낫다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 낫다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And the ㅅ in the verb 낫다 is dropped when it’s conjugated in the present tense. So if you want to say I recover, it’s 나아요 and how do you say I healed or I recovered.
Mihyeon: 나았어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so if you want to ask someone, have you recovered from the cold.
Mihyeon: 감기 나았어요?
Hyunwoo: Okay. Next word.
Mihyeon: 당분간
Hyunwoo: For the time being, for a little while.
Mihyeon: 당분간 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 당분간 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: This word is used when you are talking about your plan about something that you are going to do or not going to do. So if you want to say, I am not going to come here for a while, how do you say that?
Mihyeon: 당분간 안 올 거예요.
Hyunwoo: And that means I am not going to come here for the time being until there is a change in the circumstances or until there is a change of mind. Okay 네 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 휴식
Hyunwoo: Rest, break.
Mihyeon: 휴식 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 휴식 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Yeah and this word 휴식 is often used with the verb 취하다 right, to obtain. So in this dialogue as well, the doctor used the expression 휴식을 취하다 and you can use this word 휴식 to say something like 5-minute break, 10-minute break and that’s 5분간 휴식, 10분간 휴식.
Mihyeon: 5분간 휴식
Hyunwoo: 5-minute break.
Mihyeon: 10분간 휴식
Hyunwoo: 10-minute break. Okay without a break, let’s go on to the next word.
Mihyeon: 휴식을 좀 취합시다.
Hyunwoo: 안 돼요. 다음 단어 해야 돼요.
Mihyeon: 아 제발.
Hyunwoo: 마지막 단어니까. What’s the last word?
Mihyeon: 다치다
Hyunwoo: To get hurt or to get injured.
Mihyeon: 다치다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 다치다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And I want to say to everyone, be careful not to get hurt or injured in any case 다치지 마세요 and if you get hurt 다치면, go see your doctor right away 바로 병원에 가세요. I used to get hurt a lot from my hobby and I never went to the hospital but 지금 후회해요. I am regretting it now.
Mihyeon: 근데 현우씨는 안 아픈 척 했을 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: I used to. I wanted to look really cool you know even when I got hurt. 다쳤을 때도 I don’t go screaming 아, 아파 right but don’t get hurt 그게 제일 좋아요. That’s the best and now, let’s go to the grammar.
Mihyeon: 네, 좋습니다.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: Today’s grammar point is 았/었/였으면 좋겠다 and this is the grammatical structure that expresses a wish or a hope but in a less direct way and just like when the English verb to wish is used, the conjugated structure of the verb in Korean is also usually in the past tense and constructing a sentence is very simple too. To the verb stem, you just add 았/었/였으면 좋겠다. So how do you say, to come?
Mihyeon: 오다
Hyunwoo: So how do you change the verb 오다 to the past tense?
Mihyeon: 왔다
Hyunwoo: And now, how do you say I wish you would come?
Mihyeon: 왔으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay good and how about to do?
Mihyeon: 하다
Hyunwoo: And the past tense
Mihyeon: 했다
Hyunwoo: And I wish you would do
Mihyeon: 했으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 좋아요. Then how was this structure used in today’s dialogue 오늘 대화에서는 어떻게 쓰였어요?
Mihyeon: 의사 선생님이 말했어요. 빨리 나았으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the doctor said, I hope you will get better soon or I wish you would get better soon.
Mihyeon: 그리고 의사 선생님이 다시 안 하셨으면 좋겠는데요...라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the doctor also said, I wish you wouldn’t or I hope you won’t and if you remember from one of our previous lessons, another way of saying I hope or I wish is something, something 기를 바라다 but this is more laidback and you are just wishing. You are not particularly mentioning to the other person that you are talking to but here if you use 았/었/였으면 좋겠어요 or 았/었/였으면 좋겠어 you are actually talking to the other person. You are delivering message.
Mihyeon: 맞아요. 제가 현우씨 저를 도와주기를 바라요라고 말하면
Hyunwoo: Yeah if you say that, it’s a little bit formal and it doesn’t sound very strong. So if you want to say, I want you to help me or I hope you will help me or I wish you would help me, what would you say?
Mihyeon: 현우씨, 저를 도와줬으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: And if you say that, it’s less direct than saying 현우씨, 저를 도와주세요 right, it’s not as urging as just saying 해 주세요 but you are still very polite and you still deliver your message. So 미현씨 I hope you will give us some more example sentences. 예문을 들어 줬으면 좋겠어요.
Mihyeon: 네. 내일 비가 안 왔으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: I wish it wouldn’t rain tomorrow.
Mihyeon: 꿈이었으면 좋겠어요.
Hyunwoo: I wish I was dreaming right? 좋아요. 좋은 예문들 감사하고요.
Mihyeon: 아닙니다.
Hyunwoo: 네. So okay that’s it for today and that’s it for the lower intermediate lessons. 고맙습니다. 그리고 벌써 마지막 레슨이라니... I can’t believe it.

Outro

Mihyeon: 네, 그렇네요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and we hope our listeners have picked up a lot of useful expressions and also learned how to actually use them and as you know, listening to podcast lessons is very good for learning new things but you always need to practice, practice and practice what you learned. So I hope our listeners will do that and keep studying Korean. 계속 한국어 공부를 하셨으면 좋겠어요.
Mihyeon: 네, 계속 하세요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 그런데 끝나니까 조금 슬퍼요.
Hyunwoo: Well on the contrary, I am excited. 저는 신나요.
Mihyeon: 왜요?
Hyunwoo: Because it means we have new lesson types, new seasons and new lessons coming up soon.
Mihyeon: 아, 맞아요. 우리 또 새로운 레슨이 기다리고 있죠?
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 예, 기대 돼요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 저도요. I am looking forward to them too. So 여러분, 그동안 정말 감사했습니다. 새로운 레슨에서 만나요.
Mihyeon: 네, 저도 감사드립니다. 그럼 여러분, 안녕히 계세요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 수고하셨습니다.
