INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 현우입니다. It Depends.
Mihyeon: 현우씨, 오늘은 무슨 내용을 공부할 거예요?
Hyunwoo: Today we are going to learn how to say, sometimes it’s A and sometimes it’s B or it’s A and B at the same time.
Mihyeon: 아...A이기도 하고 B이기도 하다. 맞죠?
Hyunwoo: 네. 그럼 오늘 대화를 들어 볼까요?
Mihyeon: 네. 오늘 대화는 누구와 누구 사이의 대화예요?
Hyunwoo: Today’s dialogue is between 김씨, an anonymous gambler and a reporter.
Mihyeon: 음...두 사람은 처음 만났으니까 존댓말을 쓰고 있어요. 자, 그럼 잘 들어 보세요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
(1)리포터: (도박하는 사람에게) 일주일에 몇 번이나 오세요?
(1)Reporter: (To a gambler) How many times do you come a week?
(2)김씨: 일주일에 서너 번 오는 것 같아요.
(2)Mrs. Kim: I think three or four times a week.
(3)리포터: 도박할 때 운이 좋아요?
(3)Reporter: Do you have a lot of luck when you gamble?
(4)김씨: 운이... 좋기도 하고, 나쁘기도 해요.
(4)Mrs. Kim: I’m lucky sometimes, sometimes I’m not.
(5)리포터: 가족은 반대하지 않아요?
(5)Reporter: Isn't your family against your gambling?
(6)김씨: 반대하기도 하고, 안 하기도 해요.
(6)Mrs. Kim: Sometimes they are (against), sometimes not.
(7)리포터: 네? 무슨 뜻이죠?
(7)Reporter: Pardon? What does that mean?
(8)김씨: 돈을 많이 벌어서 가면 좋아해요. 못 벌면 싫어하고요...
(8)Mrs. Kim: They like it when I make a lot of money. If I don't, they don't like it…
(9)리포터: 에휴...
(9)Reporter: (sighs)
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Mihyeon: 아이고 가족들이 더 나빠요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah if you have a family who love you when you earn money from gambling and hate you when you lose, 도박을 멈출 수가 없을 것 같아요. You can’t stop.
Mihyeon: 네. 그래서 리포터가 한숨을 쉬었죠? 에휴 하고요.
Hyunwoo: Right and what’s the word again to sigh.
Mihyeon: 한숨을 쉬다
Hyunwoo: 한숨을 쉬다
Mihyeon: 현우씨는 갑자기 왜 한숨을 쉬어요?
Hyunwoo: 그냥 한번 따라해 봤어요.
Mihyeon: 그래요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah I just mimicked you. Okay 여러분, 한숨 쉬지 마세요.
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Cheer up and okay, 그럼 오늘 대화에 나왔던 단어들을 같이 보시죠.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 도박하다
Hyunwoo: To gamble.
Mihyeon: 도박하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 도박하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 미현씨는 도박하세요?
Mihyeon: 저요?
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 제가요?
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 아니요. 제가 도박하는 사람 같아요?
Hyunwoo: No I mean just gambling with a small amount of money you know. It can be good fun.
Mihyeon: 그래도 저는 뭐 별로 안 좋아해요. 그냥 게임하는 건 좋아하는데 뭐 도박? 어우 너무 어우...그래요.
Hyunwoo: 네. Well in fact same here. 사실 저도 그래요. And the noun gambling is 도박 and the verb to gamble is 도박하다.
Mihyeon: 여러분, 도박 많이 하지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. So you are opposed to the idea of gambling too much and to oppose is the next word to look at.
Mihyeon: 반대하다
Hyunwoo: To oppose, to be opposed to or to be against.
Mihyeon: 반대하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 반대하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: What’s the opposite word 반댓말 of the word 반대하다?
Mihyeon: 찬성하다
Hyunwoo: To agree.
Mihyeon: 찬성, 반대.
Hyunwoo: Agreement and opposition.
Mihyeon: 네, 찬성하고 반대를 합쳐서 찬반이라고도 하죠.
Hyunwoo: Yeah 찬반 but when I was a kid 어렸을 때 and I saw this word for the first time and I read it as 반찬 which means side dishes.
Mihyeon: 좀 웃긴데요? 저도 그런 적 있어요 근데.
Hyunwoo: 진짜요?
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Really? I thought I was the only person who did that. What a relief! 안심이 돼요.
Mihyeon: 네, 안심하세요. 다 비슷해요.
Hyunwoo: 네. Okay and the last word
Mihyeon: 벌다
Hyunwoo: To earn, to make usually money or time.
Mihyeon: 벌다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 벌다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: So how do you say I need to make money?
Mihyeon: 돈을 벌어야 돼요.
Hyunwoo: And how about I don’t want to make money.
Mihyeon: 돈 벌고 싶지 않아요. 아, 근데 현우씨, 이거 좀 예문이 이상한데요?
Hyunwoo: 왜요?
Mihyeon: 돈 벌고 싶지 않은 사람이 있어요?
Hyunwoo: Maybe you know sometimes 돈 벌다 means to work 일하다. So if you don’t want to work, you can say 돈 벌기 싫어요. 돈 벌고 싶지 않아요.
Mihyeon: 아...무슨 말인지 지금 알겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 아시겠죠? You know sometimes 열심히 돈을 벌다가, people want to stop for a while and go back to school. I know some of our listeners are back in school after a while of working. Well any way, it’s time to get into the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Mihyeon: 오늘의 문법 포인트는 뭐뭐 하기도 하고 뭐뭐 하기도 하다입니다.
Hyunwoo: 네. This structure expresses multiple actions or states happening at the same time. So it is translated into English as sometimes verb B, sometimes verb A or verb A and B at the same time. So how do you construct a sentence with this? Let’s take 좋다 and 나쁘다 for example.
Mihyeon: 네. 좋다 나쁘다. 좋기도 하고 나쁘기도 하다.
Hyunwoo: It’s good and bad at the same time or it’s sometimes good and sometimes bad. 그럼 오늘의 대화에서는 어떻게 쓰였어요?
Mihyeon: 김씨가 운이... 좋기도 하고 나쁘기도 해요라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah Ms. Kim, she said, I am sometimes lucky, sometimes not.
Mihyeon: 김씨가 반대하기도 하고 안 하기도 해요라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah she also said, sometimes they are against it but sometimes they are not. 그러면 미현씨 예를 좀 더 들어 주세요.
Mihyeon: 저는 소주를 좋아하기도 하고 싫어하기도 해요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I sometimes like soju and sometimes hate it. 왜 그렇죠?
Mihyeon: 배가 부른 날에는 소주를 좋아하기도 해요. 맥주보다는 소주를 좋아하기도 해요.
Hyunwoo: I see what you mean. 그러면 다른 예를 하나 들어 주세요.
Mihyeon: 그렇기도 하고 그렇지 않기도 해요.
Hyunwoo: It is so but it is not so at the same time.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Okay, so it’s time to wrap it up. 미현씨 그리고 여러분, 수고하셨어요.
Mihyeon: 네, 현우씨도 수고하셨습니다.
Hyunwoo: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
Mihyeon: 안녕히 계세요.
