INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요, 여러분. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 현우입니다. How About Me Instead? But Wait! Already 20?
Mihyeon: 네, 정말요. 벌써 20번 레슨이에요. 그동안 여러분 정말 열심히 공부하셨어요. 앞으로도 계속 꾸준히 공부해 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah time flies and I am sure our listeners are studying hard too and also enjoying learning with us. So 미현씨 what was the word you said after 계속?
Mihyeon: 아, 꾸준히요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 꾸준히.
Mihyeon: 꾸준히 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 꾸준히 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Yeah and 꾸준히 하다 means doing something consistently, keeping at something. So I hope our listeners will continue to study and practice with us throughout this lower intermediate series.
Mihyeon: 네, 저도 그렇게 생각해요. 현우씨, 그럼 오늘은 뭐에 대해서 배울 거예요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 오늘은 today we will learn how to say instead of something, someone or doing something.
Mihyeon: 아, 오늘은 대신에를 배우는군요.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 다시 한 번만 이야기해 주세요.
Mihyeon: 대신에.
Hyunwoo: 대신에. Exactly. So today, we have a continued dialogue between the father and the daughter and the daughter is talking to her father in polite language and the father is using the intimate language 반말. So pay attention to in what parts you hear the word 대신에.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
(1)아빠: 딸! 아빠가 가방 사 왔다!
(1)Father: I got a bag for you!
(2)딸: 아빠, 지금 장난이죠? 제가 핸드백 사 달라고 했잖아요!
(2)Daughter: Dad, are you joking? I told you to get me a handbag!
(3)아빠: 어? 어... 핸드백 대신에 이거 쓰면 안돼?
(3)Father: Huh? Uh.... Can't you use this one instead?
(4)딸: 이건 너무 크잖아요.
(4)Daughter: It's too big.
(5)아빠: 에이. 손으로 들고 다니면 핸드백이지.
(5)Father: Come on, if you carry it with your hand it's a handbag.
(6)딸: 하하하. 아빠! 그게 뭐예요!!

(10)Daughter: Okay, what?
(11)아빠: 너 이마가 왜 그래? 다쳤어?
(11)Father: What's with your forehead? Did you get hurt?
(12)딸: 아…
(12)Daughter: Oh...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well I think the daughter is so 착해요. She is so nice. I thought she would get mad at her father.
Mihyeon: 맞아요. 딸이 저랑 비슷해요. 너무 착한데요?
Hyunwoo: Hmm…
Mihyeon: 핸드백을 사 달라고 했는데 책가방을 사 왔잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 그런데 아빠한테 고마워요하고 했으니까 정말 착한 딸이에요.
Hyunwoo: 음...
Mihyeon: 저처럼.
Hyunwoo: 그런 것 같아요. Then let’s look at some vocabulary that was used in today’s dialogue.
Mihyeon: 네.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 쓰다
Hyunwoo: To use
Mihyeon: 쓰다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 쓰다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: This is a very powerful word. 미현씨는 in what kind of context do you use the word 쓰다 most often?
Mihyeon: 전화를 쓰고 돈을 쓰고 그리고 가끔씩 신용카드를 써요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and I think I also use the word for computer too.
Mihyeon: 아, 네. 컴퓨터를 써요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 쓰다라는 말은 정말 많은 뜻이 있죠.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 쓰다 has a lot of meanings in Korean and it can be translated into even more meanings in English. Mihyeon: 네, 그리고 그 다음 단어도 여러가지 뜻이 있는 단어예요.
Hyunwoo: 아, 그래요? 그 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 들다
Hyunwoo: To lift, to carry, to hold.
Mihyeon: 들다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 들다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: How do you say to hold a bag?
Mihyeon: 가방을 들다
Hyunwoo: How about I am holding a pen in my hand.
Mihyeon: 손에 펜을 들고 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Or how about I can’t lift it.
Mihyeon: 들 수 없어요 또는 못 들어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah some of my female friends carry really heavy bags. I can’t lift them with one hand. 가방을 들 수 없어요. I wonder what they have in there. 가끔씩 미현씨 가방도 your bag is really heavy sometimes too.
Mihyeon: 어떻게 알아요? 들어 보셨어요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Mihyeon: 아, 언제? 너무 많이 알려고 하면 다쳐요.
Hyunwoo: Okay I will be careful but you just said today’s last vocab word. 그거라도 알려 주세요. At least tell me about it please. What was the word?
Mihyeon: 다치다
Hyunwoo: To get hurt, to get injured.
Mihyeon: 다치다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 다치다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I hurt my finger?
Mihyeon: 손가락을 다쳤어요.
Hyunwoo: How about I hurt my foot?
Mihyeon: 발을 다쳤어요. 여러분, 여러분은 조심해서 다치지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: Okay and what did you say earlier about 너무 많이 알려고 하는 것?
Mihyeon: 아, 네...그거? 너무 많이 알려고 하면 다쳐요. 이거 옛날에 유행했던 말이에요.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요.
Mihyeon: 광고에서 나왔나요?
Hyunwoo: 음...잘 기억은 안 나요. 그런데 옛날에 유행했었죠?
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: So it’s like a popular quote that used to be in fashion in Korea. Don’t try to know too much or you’d get hurt. But I think our listeners want to know more, more about today’s grammar point. What do you think?
Mihyeon: 아, 그건 괜찮아요. 그럼 문법 포인트 같이 보시죠.
Hyunwoo: Okay.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: Today’s grammar point is about how to say instead of or in return for and what’s the expression again?
Mihyeon: 대신에
Hyunwoo: 네, 대신에 means instead of or in return for. Like in English, instead of can be used with both nouns and verbs and when a verb comes before 대신에, the verb is conjugated into the adjective form to modify 대신에.
Mihyeon: 맞아요. 명사 다음에는 그냥 대신에라고 하면 되죠.
Hyunwoo: Yeah you can just add 대신에 after a noun.
Mihyeon: 그리고 동사는 은/는 대신에 라고 해야 돼요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah you add 은/는 대신에 after a verb stem. So how do you say instead of him?
Mihyeon: 그 사람 대신에.
Hyunwoo: 그 사람 대신에. How about instead of coffee?
Mihyeon: 커피 대신에.
Hyunwoo: 커피 대신에. And instead of sleeping?
Mihyeon: 자는 대신에.
Hyunwoo: Yeah 자는 대신에. And instead of watching a movie?
Mihyeon: 영화 보는 대신에.
Hyunwoo: Okay 영화 보는 대신에. And how was this 대신에 used in today’s dialogue?
Mihyeon: 아빠가 핸드백 대신에 이거 쓰면 안돼?라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the father said, can’t you use this one instead of the handbag?
Mihyeon: 핸드백 사 주는 대신에 아빠가 맛있는 거 사 줄게라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the father also said, daddy we will buy you something nice to eat instead of the handbag. So remember that it’s 은/는 대신에 for verbs and while in English, instead of and in return for have different meanings, in Korean, 대신에 can be used for both of them. 미현씨, please give us two more example sentences.
Mihyeon: 밥 대신 라면 먹었어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I often do this too. I ate Ramen instead of rice.
Mihyeon: 네 숙제 도와주는 대신 너는 내 방 청소해.
Hyunwoo: Sounds like a fair trade. I will help you with your homework. So in return, you clean my room. Okay I think that’s it for today. 미현씨, 수고하셨어요.

Outro

Mihyeon: 벌써 끝났어요?
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 네, 현우씨도 수고하셨어요. 그리고 여러분도 수고하셨습니다.
