| Hyunwoo: 때문에. 때문에 literally means because of right? |
| Junsu: Yeah that’s right and Korean people tend to use this word more often than 위해서 when they talk. |
| Hyunwoo: That’s right. So for example, 미현씨 how would you say in writing, how would you write for me – for the good of me? |
| Mihyeon: 저를 위해서 |
| Hyunwoo: And how would you say, how would you say the same thing when you talk? |
| Mihyeon: 저 때문에 |
| Hyunwoo: 네. It literally means because of me but when you want to thank someone for coming all the way for you, you might be tempted to say, 저를 위해서 여기까지 와 줘서 감사합니다. but Korean people tend to say 저 때문에 여기까지 와 주셔서 감사합니다. or 와 줘서 감사합니다. Okay what’s the next word? |

| Hyunwoo: Okay 거짓말 is a lie but how do you use that in a sentence? Junsu, how do you say, to lie? |
| Junsu: 거짓말을 하다. Well in Korean, we don’t say to tell a lie. We say, to do a lie. |
| Hyunwoo: How would you say to tell a lie literally and what is the natural translation of to tell a lie in Korean? |
| Junsu: Literally you would say 거짓말을 말하다 but actually in Korean, we say 거짓말을 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그래서 that’s 거짓말을 하다 to tell a lie. So 미현씨 how do you say, please don’t lie. |

| Hyunwoo: How do you say, I know you are lying? |

| Hyunwoo: Or you could say 거짓말을 하지 않다 too right? Yeah…it’s the easiest and 미현씨, 다시 한 번말 말해 주세요. Please say them again. |

| Mihyeon: 주호가 선영아, 사실은...이라고 말했어요. |

| Mihyeon: 선영이가 사실은 뭐?!라고 했어요. |
| Junsu: Seonyeong said, in fact what?! |
| Mihyeon: 주호가 그런데 사실은... 너를 위해서 갔어라고 했어요. |
| Junsu: Juho said but in fact I went there for you. |
| Hyunwoo: But wait Junsu we were just talking about how 위해서 is for writing and we use 때문에for colloquial situations but why is Juho saying 너를 위해서 갔어? |
| Junsu: Well Juho is trying to get out of his lie. So he is trying to be romantic with her and just like in English, when you hear someone say I did something for you, you feel better than when they say, I did something because of you. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah exactly. I think that’s why too. So 미현씨 in fact in Korean is 사실은 or in a shorter form 실은. Which one do you use more often? |
| Mihyeon: 저는 사실은이라고 많이 사용해요. |
| Hyunwoo: 준수씨는요? |
| Junsu: Me too. |
| Hyunwoo: But I say 실은 more often 실은. So I guess it depends on the person and how do you say 사실은 or in fact in a different way. How do you say to be honest with you to tell you the truth, how do you say that more literally. |
| Mihyeon: 솔직히 말하면. |
| Junsu: And you can also say 솔직히 말하자면. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah 솔직히 is literally, honestly or frankly. So you can say 솔직히 말하면, 솔직히 말하자면 instead of 사실은 or 실은 but 사실은 and 실은 is shorter and is easier to say. So how can you use 사실은 or 실은 in a sentence. 미현씨, 예문 좀 들어 주세요. |
| Mihyeon: 정말 미안한데 사실은 네가 먹은 거 유통기한이 지난 거야. |
| Junsu: I am really sorry but in fact what you ate is past the expiry date. |
| Hyunwoo: 음...안 좋은데요. 네. Another example. |
| Mihyeon: 실은 나는 외계인이야. 너를 사랑할 수가 없어. |
| Junsu: In fact, I am an alien. I cannot love you. |
| Hyunwoo: All right great example sentences and what’s the second grammar point of today? |
| Junsu: The second grammar point is insisting on a fact. |
| Hyunwoo: So what is this grammar point 미현씨? |
| Mihyeon: 잖아 |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah it is 잖아 and you add 잖아 to what you want to say and you can insist on a fact. How can it be constructed in a sentence 준수씨? |
| Junsu: You take the verb stem and add 잖아 or 잖아요. Since it’s insisting on a fact, it’s often used in the past tense. |
| Hyunwoo: 맞아요. So how was it used in today’s dialogue. 미현씨, 어떻게 쓰였죠? 오늘의 대화에서? |
| Mihyeon: 네. 선영이가 거 봐! 갔잖아!라고 했어요. |
| Junsu: Seonyeong said, see, you went there. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah so when you say 잖아 at the end of the verb stem plus the past infix, you can insist on a fact and say, hey you went there and say things like hey I told you, hey I was right. Hey you were wrong, things like that. So let’s look at some examples. How do you say when you insist on the fact that the other person did it and say, hey you did it. |
| Junsu: 네가 했잖아. |
| Hyunwoo: So it comes from 네가 하다 and it becomes 네가 했다 in the past tense and finally |
| Junsu: 했잖아 |
| Hyunwoo: And let’s say Mihyeon is suffering from a short term memory loss and Mihyeon doesn’t remember that we were here yesterday and Junsu how can you say to Mihyeon, hey we were here yesterday. Don’t you remember? |
| Junsu: 어제 왔잖아. 기억 안 나? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah you can say 어제 왔잖아. 기억 안나? 어제 왔잖아 it comes from the verb 오다 that means to come and it becomes 왔다 the past tense and it becomes |
| Junsu: 왔잖아. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah that’s how it is conjugated and it is often used with this expression that Seonyeong said. What is it 미현씨? |
| Mihyeon: 거 봐. |
| Hyunwoo: And what does it mean? |
| Junsu: See? 거 봐 comes from 그것 봐 look at it. So it means see. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah when you’ve already warned someone of something or gave a piece of advice but the other person didn’t listen to your advice and the result of the 사실 the fact that you are insisting on that was revealed was exactly what you had been talking about, you can say 거 봐 I am right 내가 맞잖아. How do you say that in politer language 미현씨? 거 봐. Can you say 거 봐 to your boss? |
| Mihyeon: 거 봐는 반말이니까 존댓말로는 그것 보세요라고 하면 돼요. |
| Hyunwoo: Well what’s it again? |

| Hyunwoo: Can you also change that 그것 to 거 and can you say 거 보세요? |
| Mihyeon: Yeah you can do that but it sounds kind of impolite. Doesn’t it? |
