Welcome back to KoreanClass101.com’s 삼분 한국어, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Korean.
In the last lesson, we covered how to ask whether a bus is going to the right destination. Today, we'll make sure you get off at the right stop!
Are you ready? Let's start!
These days, most buses in Korea have a board in the front to tell you the next stop and after as well. Also there will be announcement.
But when it gets crowded or noisy, you might not be able to see or listen well. So it's good to be able to ask someone what the next stop is.
"What is the next stop?"
다음 정류장 is next stop
은 is the subject particle
어디에요? is where
“Where is the next stop?”
You could also simply ask if the next stop is yours. Instead of 어디, put your destination instead!
For example, COEX.
“Is the next stop COEX?”
Okay, now it’s your turn. How would you say, is the next stop 동대문? Try to say it!
“Is the next stop Dongdaemun?”
Remember it’s nice to say “Excuse me” before these sentences.
Now it’s time for Amy’s insight.
There are a number of great smartphone apps to list schedules and plot routes for every bus in Korea’s urban areas. If you don’t have one, you can still usually find your bus’s route listed along the sides of the bus, near the ceiling or even at subway station! They even have a little pocket map for you.
Do you know what I just asked you? We’re going to learn that phrase in the next lesson.
Thanks for posting. According to the National Institute of the Korean Language, you can use both
‘어디예요?’ and ‘어디에요?’
‘어디예요?’ is the abbreviated version of ‘어디+이-+-에요’, and '어디에요?' is the informal formal form of ‘어디에?’ (a question asking where a place is).
Cheers,
Lyn

Hello,
Shouldn't it be 어디예요 instead of 어디에요 ? Also 코엑스예요 instead of 코엑스에요 ? Because I always thought if it ends in a vowel it should be 예요 and if it ends with a consonant it should be 이에요.

Hi Kamila,
Thanks for posting. This is because 코엑스 ends with a vowel, and 동대문 ends with a consonant(batchim). When a word ends with a vowel you add 'eyo', and when it ends with a consonant you add 'ieyo'.
Hope this was of help!
Cheers,
Lyn

why would you say 'COEX eyo', but 'dongdemun ieyo'? why does eyo change into ieyo? (in 'is the next stop......')

Hello,
What are the names of the bus apps that we could use if we're in Korea? Are they also English service for these apps or are they all in Korean?
And also, how would you say yes and no in Korean? Are there various ways of saying them? Such as informal/formal ways.
Thanks in advance!
