Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. This week’s theme is bugs and insects. Those are the things that I really don’t like. So let’s see what we have for this week.
Okay the first word is 개미 (gaemi) meaning “ant.” With that word, you can say 개미는 단 것을 좋아합니다. (Gaemineun dan geoseul joahamnida.) which means “Ants like sweet foods.”
Okay next we have 매미 (maemi). 매미 (maemi) is the word meaning “cicada.” With that word, you can say 여름에는 매미 때문에 시끄럽습니다. (Yeoreumeneun maemi ttaemune sikkeureopsseumnida.) which means “In summer, it’s very noisy because of cicadas.”
파리 (pari) which means “fly.” Well, you can make some sentence something like 파리에 가면 파리가 많이 있습니다. (Parie gamyeon pariga mani itsseumnida.) “If you go to Paris, you can find many flies.” Paris, the city name and the fly use the same spelling 파리 (pari). There is no connection though.
Okay next we have 벌레 (beolle) which means “worm.” You can say 어떤 사람들은 벌레를 먹는 것을 좋아합니다. (Eotteon saramdeureun beollereul meongneun geoseul johahamnida.) which means “Some people like eating worms.” We used to eat worms when we went to movie theaters. It’s kind of special worm though which is kind of fried, that’s true.
Okay next we have 무당벌레 (mudangbeolle) which means “ladybug.” I like this English translation saying ladybug because if you break it down, this Korean word actually means something like the bug that looks like a witch doctor. The witch doctor or 무당 (mudang) wears very colorful outfit which is really like appearance of this ladybug. With that word, you can say 무당벌레가 날아다닐 때에는 시끄러운 소리가 납니다. (Mudangbeollega naradanil ttaeeneun sikkeureoun soriga namnida.) which means “When ladybugs are flying, it’s making some noisy sounds.”
Okay next we have the end. Okay that’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed all of them. I will see you next week. 다음 시간에 뵙겠습니다. (Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
