Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Let’s see what we have for this week. This week’s theme is currency exchange. Okay let’s see what we have for this theme.
The first one is 외국환 (oegukwan) meaning “foreign exchange.” It’s also common to say 외환 (oehwan). Okay with that word, you can say 시장에서 외국환에 대한 수요가 많아졌습니다. (Sijangeseo oegukwane daehan suyoga manajyeotsseumnida.) which means “The demand for foreign exchange has been increased.”
Okay next we have 유로 (yuro) which means “Euro.” You can say 지난 달에는 유로가 강세였습니다. (Jinan dareneun yuroga gangseyeotsseumnida.) which means “In the last month, Euro was strong.” So 강세 (gangse) literally means in the situation which something is strong. So you can use the word 강세 (gangse) “strong” when you watch TV news about foreign currency.
달러 (dalleo) US dollar, yay! Why yay? When Korean people just say 달러 (dalleo) it means US dollar and if it is for Hong Kong dollar or something like that, we put the country’s name before saying 달러 (dalleo) which is something like 홍콩 달러 (hongkong dalleo) for Hong Kong dollars. With that word, you can say 다음 주에 뉴욕 여행이 있어서 한국 원을 미국 달러로 바꿨습니다. (Daeum jue nyuyok yeohaengi isseoseo hanguk woneul miguk dalleoro bakkwotsseumnida.) which means “Since I have a trip to New York City next week, I converted Korean won to US dollars.”
통화 (tonghwa) which means “currency.” With that word, you can say 일본의 통화는 엔입니다. (Ilbonui tonghwaneun enimnida.) which means “The Japanese currency is yen.”
Okay next we have 잔돈 (jandon) which means “small bills.” With that word, you can say 여행에서 남은 잔돈을 모두 기증했습니다. (Yeohaengeseo nameun jandoneul modu gijeunghaetsseumnida.) which means “I donated all small bills that I have left from the trip.”
