Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. 안녕하세요. (Annyeonghaseyo.) 이재휘입니다. (Ijaehwiimnida.) Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. And this week, we will be talking about the words for let me see what it is, Korean companies.
현대 (hyeondae) someone might call it like “hyundai” but in Korean, you can say 현대 (hyeondae) and that’s the brand for automobiles and also they make some chips, memories too. 현대 자동차는 한국에서 가장 큰 자동차 회사입니다. (Hyeondae jadongchaneun hangugeseo gajang keun jadongcha hoesaimnida.) meaning “Hyundai Automobile is the biggest automobile company in South Korea.” Well that’s actually true because that’s the only automobile company in South Korea for now.
Okay and next one we have 롯데 (rotte). The Lotte company has a lot of like department stores. I can say 서울에는 롯데 백화점이 많이 있습니다. (Seoureneun rotte baekwajeomi mani itsseumnida.) which means “There are many Lotte department stores in Korea” and you can also find duty free shops and amusement park and also like apartments too with Lotte.
And next we have I think it’s the most popular brand 삼성 (samseong) which is Samsung. Samsung with Samsung… Okay I can say 삼성은 자동차도 만들었습니다. (Samseongeun jadongchado mandeureotsseumnida.) “Samsung used to make cars too.” So can you imagine Samsung cars like it might be a little bit like Apple cars but now they mostly make consumer devices.
Next we have 대한항공 (daehanhanggong). That’s for Korean Air. 대한항공은 한국에서 가장 큰 항공사입니다. (Daehanhanggongeun hangugeseo gajang keun hanggongsaimnida.) which means “Korean Air is the biggest airline company in South Korea.” And the second biggest is Asiana Airlines.
Okay 에스엠 엔터테인먼트 (eseuem enteoteinmeonteu) which is for SM Entertainment. I think you should be very familiar with this name if you are a big fan of Korean singers, idol groups. 에스엠 엔터테인먼트에는 유명한 가수들이 많이 있습니다. (Eseuem enteoteinmeonteueneun yumyeonghan gasudeuri mani itsseumnida.) like “At SM Entertainment, there are many popular singers.” and also like with the other agencies too.
