Do you know how to count bottles? Find out at the end of this video!
Hi everybody! I'm Alisha.
안녕하세요. 노경진입니다.
Welcome to Korean Counters for Beginners, where you'll learn how to count all sorts of different objects in Korean! Seonsaengnim (선생님), which counter will we learn in this lesson?
잔 (jan)
First, let's take a look at what kind of objects can be counted with the counter.
When you count the number of glasses, you can use this counter.
잔 (jan)
This counter literally means "a glass." When you need water, any other beverage or beer that can be contained inside a glass or a cup, you can use this counter. In Korean, you should literally say "One glass of water please" with the right counter.
Okay, let's count from 1 to 10 with this counter.
한 잔
두 잔
세 잔
네 잔
다섯 잔
여섯 잔
일곱 잔
여덟 잔
아홉 잔
열 잔
Like other counters, the counter sounds differently when it's used after the nouns that end with batchim, which are the numbers 5 to 10.
daseot jjan(다섯 잔) not daseot gwon(다섯 짠)
yeoseot jjan(여섯 잔) not yeoseot gwon(여섯 짠)
ilgop jjan(일곱 잔) not ilgop gwon (일곱 짠)
yedeol jjan(여덜 잔) not yedeol gwon (여덜 짠)
ahop jjan(아홉 잔) not ahop gwon (아홉 짠)
yeol jjan(열 잔) not yeol gwon (열 짠)
Okay. Now let's take a look at some sample sentences using this counter. Listen carefully to what sorts of objects can be counted with this counter.
잠을 자기 전에 물을 한 잔 마십니다.
I drink a cup of water before going to sleep.
레스토랑에서 와인 한 잔을 주문했습니다.
I ordered a glass of wine at a restaurant.
스타벅스의 커피 한 잔은 3500 원입니다.
A cup of Starbucks coffee costs 3,500 won.
Now it's time for a quiz. I'm going to ask you a question in English. Answer the question in Korean. Are you ready? Make sure to use the right counter.
How many cups of water did you drink yesterday?
어제는 물 다섯 잔을 마셨습니다.
How many cups of orange juice do you usually drink a week?
저는 한 주에 평균 오렌지 주스 세 잔을 마십니다.
Do you know how to count bottles in Korean? The answer is..
It literally means "Bottles." You can use this when you count bottles of water or beverages. And it's not just for beverages – you can count the number of any types of bottles using this counter. Seonsaengnim (선생님) will give you an example.
가족과 함께 콜라 한 병을 마셨습니다.
I drank a bottle of cola with my family.
Okay, everyone. That's it for this lesson. We'll see you next time!
