POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: ah... I still remember how amazing it was and how happy I was when I finally went out on my first leave from my military service. 첫 휴가 가는 날, 정말 얼마나 기뻤는지 설명을 할 수가 없어요.
Gyeong-eun: I hear that a lot. But since I'm a girl and I didn't do the military service I can't really imagine what it is like. 그런 얘기 많이 듣는데, 저는 군대를 안 갔다 왔기 때문에 상상이 잘 안 돼요.
Hyunwoo: yeah you just HAVE to experience it in order to understand the mixed feelings. But for about 100 days, you don't get to go back home and your homesickness peaks and then you are free to go and meet your family.
Gyeong-eun: For how many days? 며칠 동안이에요?
Hyunwoo: Well, that's the sad part. It's only a few days long, so it's so painful to go back to the military base again and I was actually feeling the physical pain, too. But 경은 씨, you know what, you have to stop me, stories about the military service usually never end.
Gyeong-eun: 하하. 알겠어요. 그럼 빨리 단어 봐요.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What's the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say "so that you won't" or to prevent something from happening.
Hyunwoo: 예를 들자면?
Gyeong-eun: 다치지 않도록 조심하세요.
Hyunwoo: "Be careful so that you don't get hurt."
Gyeong-eun: 네. when you are talking about something that had better not happen, you can use this structure
Hyunwoo: which is?
Gyeong-eun: -지 않도록
Hyunwoo: That's right. and the sentence can take the meaning of "so that you won't" or "to prevent something from happening."
Gyeong-eun: Sentences using this grammatical structure can sound a bit formal.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, it does, but it also depends on the situation and the context, and there is actually a more casual way to say the same thing. right?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 맞아요. you can change the part -지 않도록 to -지 않게 (-ji anke). But this structure is very commonly used both in everyday conversations and in formal statements, so it is important to know both of them.
Hyunwoo: Exactly, so how do you form a statement with this structure -지 않도록?
Gyeong-eun: You take the verb stem and add -지 않도록 (-ji antorok).
Hyunwoo: For example?
Gyeong-eun: For example, 떨어지다 (tteoreojida) is “to fall down” and you may keep
떨어지 and -지 않도록 = 떨어지지 않도록 (tteoreojiji antorok)
Hyunwoo: Ok, so how do you say "Be careful not to fall down."
Gyeong-eun: 떨어지지 않도록 조심하세요. (tteoreojiji antorok josimhaseyo)
Hyunwoo: And using the other casual form, -지 않게 (-ji anke), how do you say the same thing?
Gyeong-eun: You could say, 떨어지지 않게 조심하세요. (tteoreojiji anke josimhaseyo)
Hyunwoo: Ok, now let’s have a look at how this structure was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요.
Gyeong-eun: 부모님이 걱정하시지 않도록 바로 집으로 가. (bumonim-i geokjeonghasiji antorok baro jib-euro ga.)
Hyunwoo: "Go straight home so that your parents won't worry."
Gyeong-eun: 그리고 복귀할 때 늦지 않도록 일찍 출발해. (geurigo bokgwihal ttae neutji antorok iljjik chulbalhae.)
Hyunwoo: "And when you return to the base, leave early so that you won't be late."
Gyeong-eun: 그리고, 니 여자친구 고무신 거꾸로 신지 않도록 잘 해 주고. (geurigo, ni yaojachingu gomusin geokkuro sinji antorok jal hae jugo.)
Hyunwoo: "And be nice to your girlfriend so that she won't start dating someone else."
Hyunwoo: Ok, before we finish, let’s look at some sample Sentences. 경은 씨, 영어로 제가 말할 테니까 한국어로 말해주세요.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: How do you say, "Be quite so that the baby won't wake up."
Gyeong-eun: 아기가 깨지 않도록 조용히 하세요. (agi-ga kkaeji antorok joyong-hi haseyo.)
Hyunwoo: "Keep your wallet in the bag so that you won't lose it."
Gyeong-eun: 지갑을 잃어버리지 않도록 가방에 넣어 두세요. (jigab-eul ireobeoriji antorok gabang-e neo-eo duseyo.)
Hyunwoo: 그리고 마지막으로...
Hyunwoo: "To prevent from getting a cold, please wear warm clothes."
Gyeong-eun: 감기에 걸리지 않도록 옷을 따뜻하게 입으세요. (gamgi-e geolliji antorok os-eul ttatteutage ibeuseyo.)
