Hyunwoo: And where does this conversation take place?
Gyeong-eun: 이 대화는 집에서 일어나는 대화예요.
Hyunwoo: In the house, right? So, 이 대화는 누구와 누구의 대화예요?
Gyeong-eun: This conversation is between a woman, her husband, and her mother in law.
Hyunwoo: So the woman is talking to her mother in 존댓말,
Gyeong-eun: and the couple are talking to each other in 반말.
Hyunwoo: So let’s listen to the conversation.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 들어 봐요.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
부인: 어머니, 이 국 너무 맛있어요. 요리사가 한 음식인 줄 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: This soup is so delicious. I thought a professional cook made it.
시어머니: 맛있니? 호호호. 다행이다. 그만하고 먹어.
Hyunwoo: Is it? (Hohoho.) Good to hear that. You can stop working and eat.
부인: 아니에요. 이제 이것만 하면 끝이에요.
Hyunwoo: No, it's okay. I just have to finish this one.
시어머니: 너무 무리하지 마라.
Hyunwoo: Don't work too hard.
부인: 아니에요. 어머니도 같이 하시잖아요.
Hyunwoo: No, you're doing it with me, too.
시어머니: 요리도 잘하고, 우리 며느리가 최고네.
Hyunwoo: You're good at cooking! I have the best daughter-in-law.
남편: 여보, 힘들지? 당신 오늘 천사인 줄 알았어.
Hyunwoo: Honey, you must be tired. I thought you were an angel today.
부인: 치... 고마워...
Hyunwoo: Hmm...thank you.
남편: 그리고 이거... 선물이야.
Hyunwoo: And this...is for you.
부인: 어? 발리 가는 비행기표잖아? 여보 고마워! 난 당신이 여행 안 가고 싶은 줄 알았어.
Hyunwoo: Huh? Flight tickets to Bali? Thank you, honey. I thought you didn't want to travel.
남편: 아니야. 다음 주에 같이 가자. 발리 가는 게 비싼 줄 알았는데, 다른 곳은 더 비싼 것 같아.
Hyunwoo: No, let's go next week. I thought going to Bali was expensive, but I think other places are even more expensive.
부인: 그렇지? 여보, 고마워! 사랑해!
Hyunwoo: Right? Honey, thank you! I love you!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Wow, the husband's really nice actually. 발리에 가는 표를 샀네요?
Gyeong-eun: That's so sweet. 정말 좋은 남편인데요?
Hyunwoo: Haha. But the wife worked all day long helping out her mother-in-law, so she deserved something nice.
Gyeong-eun: Like going to 발리? 하하.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, haha. maybe. We talked about this phenomenon of more and more people going abroad for traveling during the traditional holidays in one of our Culture Class lessons.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 추석이나 설날에 여행 가는 사람들도 있어요.
Hyunwoo: Actually there were times when I didn't go back to see my parents during traditional holidays but that was because I absolutely couldn't go, and not because I chose not to go, so it's still new to me.
Gyeong-eun: 네 맞아요. 그래서, 이 대화에 나오는 남편도, he insisted that they go visit his parents, but later he bought tickets to Bali for his wife.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I think it's a great idea, go visit your parents and go traveling; do both. But the hard part is people should go back to work immediately after the traditional holidays are over.
Gyeong-eun: 네... 연휴가 끝나면 바로 일을 시작해야 되죠.
Hyunwoo: 네, alright, now how about we have a look at the vocabulary for this lesson?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Okay, now let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are going to have a look at is,
Gyeong-eun: 그만하다
Hyunwoo: “to stop doing something, to quit doing something.”
Gyeong-eun: (slow) 그만하다 (normal) 그만하다
Hyunwoo: 그만하다 is to stop doing something, but there are a lot of ways to say "to stop" or "to quit" in Korean. So let's have a look at some of those expressions.
Gyeong-eun: OK!
Hyunwoo: So, first of all, when you quit drinking or smoking, you don't say 그만하다 right?
Gyeong-eun: Right, in that case you say 끊다.
Hyunwoo: 끊다. So 끊다 literally means "to cut" so, to “cut” smoking or “quit smoking” is
Gyeong-eun: 담배를 끊다
Hyunwoo: to “quit drinking”, which is impossible for me, is,
Gyeong-eun: 술을 끊다.
Hyunwoo: And it’s impossible for you, 경은, I know, haha.
Gyeong-eun: No, haha!
Hyunwoo: And when you are walking, or in the middle of any motion or action, when you stop the action, you say
Gyeong-eun: 멈추다
Hyunwoo: For example, if you stop studying for a second to smoke, haha, you say
Gyeong-eun: 공부를 멈추다.
Hyunwoo: But if you finish studying for the day and get ready to go home, you say
Gyeong-eun:f 공부를 그만하다.
Hyunwoo: And if you quit studying and decided not to study again, you say
Gyeong-eun: 공부를 그만두다.
Hyunwoo: That's right. Everyone, 공부를 그만두면 안 돼요, 하하. You shouldn't quit studying, okay?
Gyeong-eun: 절대 안 돼요.
Hyunwoo: 절대 안 돼요. And 그만하다 and 그만두다 have a slight difference in the nuance, right.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 조금 달라요. 저희 엄마가 항상 저한테 “공부 좀 그만해" 이랬어요.
Hyunwoo: Oh…. So that means “please stop studying for the day. You should go to sleep. You’ve done enough studying.”
Gyeong-eun: Hahaha.
Hyunwoo: Yeah…as if she really said that…
Gyeong-eun: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: Hahaha, I believe you, I believe you.
Gyeong-eun: Haha, thank you!
Hyunwoo: She didn’t say, “공부를 그만둬”, right?
Gyeong-eun: Right. “공부 그만해.”
Hyunwoo: If she said… if someone says to you, “공부를 그만둬", that means you’re hopeless. “Please quit studying.” So I hope no one will say that do you, 경은. Haha. Okay, what's the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 무리하다
Hyunwoo: “to overstrain, to overwork, to try too hard”
Gyeong-eun: (slow) 무리하다 (normal) 무리하다
Hyunwoo: 무리 can be used as a noun, as well, so you can say 무리예요 when something is out of your ability.
Gyeong-eun: 저한테는 무리예요.
Hyunwoo: "It's out of my ability." Or more literally, to me, it's a 무리, something that can't be done.
Gyeong-eun: 네, and when you use it as a verb, 무리하다 means to try too hard to do something,
Hyunwoo: or work too much. My mother always tells me 무리하지 마.
Gyeong-eun: She's right! 현우 씨 너무 무리하지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: 고마워요. That's very nice of you! Haha. Now let's have a look at the grammar point for this lesson.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요!

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: So, what's the grammar point for this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say "to have wrongly thought that (something)"
Hyunwoo: As in the example,
Gyeong-eun: 죽는 줄 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: "I thought I was going to die."
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, so when you want to say that you have wrongly thought that something was happening or going to happen, you can use this structure, 줄 알았다.
Hyunwoo: Right. but this structure can also be used to mean "to have known something," so the meaning changes depending on the intonation of the sentence in which this structure is used. So before we look at how it changes depending on the intonation, let's look at the basic formation. 문장으로 어떻게 만들죠?
Gyeong-eun: 네. 간단해요. For the past tense, Verb stem + -ㄴ 줄 알다 and for the present tense, Verb stem + -는 줄 알다 and for the future tense, Verb stem + -ㄹ/을 줄 알다
Hyunwoo: Great. Okay, let's look at the changes in the nuance according to the intonation. So, for example, 집에 있는 줄 알다 can be translated in two different ways.
Gyeong-eun: 네. so if the emphasis is on 알다 (to know), the sentence means that "to know that he/she is at home"
Hyunwoo: How do you say that?
Gyeong-eun: 집에 있는 줄 알다
Hyunwoo: And when the emphasis is on 집에 있는 (to be at home), the sentence means that "to wrongly think that he/she is at home." How do you say that?
Gyeong-eun: 집에 있는 줄 알다
Hyunwoo: So it is important to pay attention to the intonation of the sentence when you use this structure.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 집에 있는 줄 알다 / 집에 있는 줄 알다, haha.
Hyunwoo: That’s tricky, right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: alright then now let's find out how this structure was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Gyeong-eun: 요리사가 한 음식인 줄 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: "I thought a professional cook made it.
Gyeong-eun: 당신 오늘 천사인 줄 알았어.
Hyunwoo: "I thought you were an angel today."
Gyeong-eun: 난 당신이 여행 안 가고 싶은 줄 알았어.
Hyunwoo: "I thought you didn't want to travel."
Gyeong-eun: 발리 가는 게 비싼 줄 알았는데, 다른 곳은 더 비싼 것 같아.
Hyunwoo: "I thought going to Bali was expensive, but I think other places are even more expensive." Great. Now let's look at a couple more sample sentences before we go. So for example, how do you say, "I thought nobody would come."
Gyeong-eun: 아무도 안 올 줄 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say, "I thought it was Sunday today."
Gyeong-eun: 오늘이 일요일인 줄 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: And lastly, how do you say, ."I thought I was the only one who was late."
Gyeong-eun: 저만 늦은 줄 알았어요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Okay, great. That just about does it for today. So 여러분 수고하셨고요, we will see you at KoreanClass101.com.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요!
