Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com입니다!
Hyunwoo: Hyunwoo here. Everything You Do in Korea “Depends on” This! 경은 씨, what are we going to have a look at in this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: In this lesson, we are going to learn how to say “it all depends on how…” in Korean using “나름이다".
Hyunwoo: This conversation takes place
Gyeong-eun: in a taxi.
Hyunwoo: And the conversation is between
Gyeong-eun: the taxi driver and a customer.
Hyunwoo: Therefore the speakers are speaking
Gyeong-eun: polite language.
Hyunwoo: Okay, let’s listen to the conversation.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 들어 봐요!
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
택시기사: 안녕하세요. 안전벨트 하세요. 어디로 갈까요?
Hyunwoo: Hi. Put your seatbelt on, please. Where to?
승객4: 아휴... 제대로 타... 아... 종로로 가 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Get in the taxi! Argh...please take us to Jongno.
택시기사: 어? 아까 저녁 때 타셨던 분이네요? 혹시 그 남자분이...
Hyunwoo: Huh? You're the same lady that took my taxi earlier this evening. By any chance could that man be...
승객4: 어머... 네. 안녕하세요. 휴... 프로포즈를 거절했더니 이렇게 술을 마셨어요.
Hyunwoo: Oh, yes! Hi! I turned down his proposal and then he drank like this.
택시기사: 아... 어? 저 사람은...!
Hyunwoo: Huh? He's...!
승객4: 어? 아는 사람이에요?
Hyunwoo: Do you know him?
택시기사: 아... 아니에요... 아니에요...
Hyunwoo: No, no, nothing.
승객4: 아휴... 취해서 잠들었어요...
Hyunwoo: He's drunk and fell asleep.
택시기사: 어떻게 프로포즈를 했길래...
Hyunwoo: I wonder how he proposed.
승객4: 아저씨 얘기 듣고 많이 생각했어요.
Hyunwoo: After I heard what you said, I thought hard.
택시기사: 아...그래도 남자가 노력하기 나름인데...
Hyunwoo: Well, but it all depends on how much effort the man makes...
승객4: 네. 사실... 프로포즈 하기 나름이죠... 근데 너무 멋없게 프로포즈를 하는 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Yes, in fact, it all depends on how he proposes...but then he proposed in such an uncool way.
택시기사: 프로포즈를 어떻게 했어요?
Hyunwoo: How did he propose?
승객4: 너랑 닮은 딸을 낳아줘. 이러는 거예요. 너무 멋없죠? 아휴...
Hyunwoo: ‘I want to have a daughter that looks like you,’ is what he said. That's so uncool, isn't it?
택시기사: 네? 아휴... 그걸 그대로...
Hyunwoo: What? He really took my word...
승객4: 네? 음... 생각해 봤는데, 솔직히 모든 일은 노력하기 나름이에요. 5년 동안 놀고 있는 건 문제가 많아요.
Hyunwoo: Pardon? Hmm...I've been thinking, and honestly, everything depends on how hard you try and make an effort. And I think it's a big problem being without a job for five years.
택시기사: 아... 그래도 여자 하기 나름인데, 다시 생각해 보세요. 좋은 사람 같으니까 잘 해 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Well, but it all depends on how the woman treats him...so think again. He seems like a nice guy, so be nice to him.
승객4: 아니에요. 이 사람 종로에서 내려 주세요. 저는 여기서 내릴게요. 아저씨 고마워요.
Hyunwoo: I don't want to. Please let him off at Jongno. I'll get off here. Thank you.
택시기사: 네... 아휴... 내가 왜 그랬지? 휴...
Hyunwoo: Okay... Why did I do that?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: That's a very bad way to propose to a girl
Gyeong-eun: 여자들이면 다 싫어할 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Really?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, I think so.
Hyunwoo: You mean every girl would hate that kind of proposal?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 하하.
Hyunwoo: Then, what kind of proposal line would you like to hear from your future husband, for you?
Gyeong-eun: I don't know. I haven't really thought about that.
Hyunwoo: You haven’t?
Gyeong-eun: Well, I haven’t.
Hyunwoo: Are you sure? Well I guess it's probably better not to think about it actually. 생각 안 하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.
Gyeong-eun: 왜요?
Hyunwoo: Because if you don't have expectations, you don't get disappointed. 기대가 없으면 실망도 없으니까요.
Gyeong-eun: 하하. 그런 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Okay! 자 그럼 이제, 오늘 레슨에 나온 단어들을 함께 볼까요?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Alright, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word is,
Gyeong-eun: 잠들다,
Hyunwoo: “to fall asleep”, “to get to sleep”
Gyeong-eun: (slow) 잠들다 (normal) 잠들다
Hyunwoo: So 경은 씨, how is this word different from 자다 or 잠을 자다?
Gyeong-eun: 잠을 자다 is “to actively go to bed or to sleep”, and 잠들다 is “natural falling asleep or finally getting to sleep”.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, then when you want to sleep, 잠을 자고 싶지만, can't get to sleep, what do you say?
Gyeong-eun: 잠이 안 와요.
Hyunwoo: One more time?
Gyeong-eun: 잠이 안 와요.
Hyunwoo: “I can't get to sleep”, and why is that?
Gyeong-eun: 저는 잠이 안 온적이 없는데요?
Hyunwoo: You’ve never experienced not being able to sleep?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah(No)...
Hyunwoo: That is so you, haha. Then when you want to say, "I was watching TV and then I (naturally/accidently) fell asleep" what do you say?
Gyeong-eun: 텔레비전 보다가 잠들었어요.
Hyunwoo: 다시 한번?
Gyeong-eun: 텔레비전 보다가 잠들었어요.
Hyunwoo: There, you use the word 잠들었어요, 잠들다. Alright. What's the next word we're looking at?
Gyeong-eun: 내리다
Hyunwoo: “To get off a vehicle”, “to unload something”, or it can also mean, “to lower something”.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, basically, “making something go down from a higher place”, it's 내리다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, so when you say that the price of something has gone down you say…?
Gyeong-eun: 가격이 내렸어요.
Hyunwoo: or if you say, “We HAVE lowered the price”? We are the ones who actually, actively, lowered the price. How do you say that?
Gyeong-eun: 가격"을" 내렸어요
Hyunwoo: Great job. Now that we've had some vocab, I think it's time for some grammar.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요!

Lesson focus

Gyeong-eun: Okay, what's the grammar point of this lesson?
Hyunwoo: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say "it all depends on how (something)” / the most important thing is how (something)”.
Gyeong-eun: As in the example…?
Hyunwoo: 모든 일은 노력하기 나름이에요.
Gyeong-eun: "Everything depends on how hard you try."
Hyunwoo: And this is a common way to express the meaning of "it all depends on, blah blah blah..." or "the most important thing is, blah blah blah..."
Gyeong-eun: 네, 많이 쓰이는 표현이에요.
Hyunwoo: So when you want to emphasize the deciding or the most important factor in a matter, you can use the structure
Gyeong-eun: -기 나름이다 with verbs or just 나름이다 with nouns.
Hyunwoo: Okay, so let's look at how you can actually make a sentence with this.
Gyeong-eun: after the Verb stem, you add 기 나름이다.
Hyunwoo: for example?
Gyeong-eun: 생각하다
Hyunwoo: “to think”
Gyeong-eun: 생각하기 나름이다
Hyunwoo: “to depend on the way one thinks”
Gyeong-eun: 생각하기 나름이에요.
Hyunwoo: "It depends on the way you think about it."
Gyeong-eun: and with nouns, you just add 나름이다,
Hyunwoo: without the -기 part, right?
Gyeong-eun: 네. For example, 사람
Hyunwoo: “person”
Gyeong-eun: 사람 나름이다
Hyunwoo: “to depend on the person”
Gyeong-eun: 그건 사람 나름이에요.
Hyunwoo: "That depends on the person." So how about we look at some examples from the dialogue of this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: Okay, first it was used in, “그래도 남자가 노력하기 나름인데…”
Hyunwoo: "But it all depends on how much effort the man makes..."
Gyeong-eun: “사실... 프로포즈 하기 나름이죠…”
Hyunwoo: "In fact, it all depends on how he proposes..."
Gyeong-eun: And, “솔직히 모든 일은 노력하기 나름이에요.”
"Honestly, everything depends on how hard you try and make an effort."
Gyeong-eun: “그래도 여자 하기 나름인데, 다시 생각해 보세요.”
Hyunwoo: "But it all depends on how the woman treats him..." Alright, now, before we finish, let’s have a look at some of our sample sentences. So 경은 씨, how would you say, "Everything depends on how you take it"?
Gyeong-eun: 모든 것은 받아들이기 나름이에요.
Hyunwoo: And how about, "It all depends on the way you think about it."
Gyeong-eun: 그건 생각하기 나름이에요.
Hyunwoo: And lastly, "It depends on what kind of problem it is."
Gyeong-eun: 문제도 문제 나름이죠.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Okay, so that just about does it for today. I hope our listeners learned this expression well, 나름이다, and I hope you can use this expression sometime soon, somewhere.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 공부도 공부하기 나름이죠?
Hyunwoo: Yeah, it depends on how you study. So that’s it for today.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요.
