택시기사: 안녕하세요. 좋은 아침입니다. 안전벨트 하시고요... 어디로 갈까요?
여자: 강남역으로 가 주세요. 아저씨, 제가 지각을 해서요... 빨리 좀 가 주세요.
택시기사: 네. 길이 조금 막혀요. 지름길로 갈게요.
여자: 아, 네. 감사합니다. 휴... 어제 일찍 잤으면 좋았을 텐데...
택시기사: 회사 가세요?
여자: 네. 어제 회식을 해서 너무 피곤해요. 회식이 일찍 끝났으면 좋았을 텐데... 사람들이 못 가게 해서...
택시기사: 회사에서 인기가 많은가 봐요.
여자: 하하. 아니에요. 그래도 어제 술만 조금 덜 마셨으면 좋았을 텐데... 과장님이 술을 계속 주셔서... 너무 많이 마셔서 힘들어요. 으... 회식은 너무 싫어요.
택시기사: 그래도 맛있는 거 먹잖아요.
여자: 맛있는 거 많이 먹죠. 그리고 술도 많이 마셔요. 어제가 금요일이었으면 좋았을 텐데... 다음날 푹 쉬고 좋잖아요.
택시기사: 맞아요. 그래도 오늘 금요일이니까 하루만 참으세요.
여자: 네. 아. 저기서 내려 주세요. 수고하세요.
택시기사: 네... 안녕히 가세요. 아... 나도 회사를 다녔으면 좋았을 텐데... 회식 부럽다...

택시기사: 안녕하세요. 좋은 아침입니다. 안전벨트 하시고요... 어디로 갈까요?
Hyunwoo: Hello. Good morning. Please fasten your seatbelt. Where to?
여자: 강남역으로 가 주세요. 아저씨, 제가 지각을 해서요... 빨리 좀 가 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Please take me to Gangnam Station. I'm actually late...could you go a little fast?
택시기사: 네. 길이 조금 막혀요. 지름길로 갈게요.
Hyunwoo: Okay, the traffic’s a bit heavy. I'll take the shortcut.
여자: 아, 네. 감사합니다. 휴... 어제 일찍 잤으면 좋았을 텐데...
Hyunwoo: Oh, okay. Thanks. (sigh) If only I had gone to bed early yesterday.
택시기사: 회사 가세요?
Hyunwoo: Are you going to work?
여자: 네. 어제 회식을 해서 너무 피곤해요. 회식이 일찍 끝났으면 좋았을 텐데... 사람들이 못 가게 해서...
Hyunwoo: Yes. We had a company dinner yesterday so I'm so tired. If only the company dinner had ended early. People didn't let me go.
택시기사: 회사에서 인기가 많은가 봐요.
Hyunwoo: Sounds like you're popular in your company.
여자: 하하. 아니에요. 그래도 어제 술만 조금 덜 마셨으면 좋았을 텐데... 과장님이 술을 계속 주셔서... 너무 많이 마셔서 힘들어요. 으... 회식은 너무 싫어요.
Hyunwoo: Not really. But I should have drunk a little less yesterday. My section chief kept giving me drinks. I drank too much yesterday so I'm suffering. Argh...I really hate company dinners.
택시기사: 그래도 맛있는 거 먹잖아요.
Hyunwoo: But you get to eat delicious food.
여자: 맛있는 거 많이 먹죠. 그리고 술도 많이 마셔요. 어제가 금요일이었으면 좋았을 텐데... 다음날 푹 쉬고 좋잖아요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, I get to eat a lot of delicious dishes. And I get to drink a lot too. If only yesterday had been Friday. It would be nice because I would be able to get some good rest the next day.
택시기사: 맞아요. 그래도 오늘 금요일이니까 하루만 참으세요.
Hyunwoo: That's right. But today is Friday so just hang in there for the day.
여자: 네. 아. 저기서 내려 주세요. 수고하세요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. Ah, drop me off over there. Thank you!
택시기사: 네... 안녕히 가세요. 아... 나도 회사를 다녔으면 좋았을 텐데... 회식 부럽다...
Hyunwoo: Okay. Good-bye. (to himself) Ah...if only I were working in a company too...company dinner...I'm jealous...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Hahaha. I can relate to this, even though I'm not exactly working in an environment where we go out for drinking in large groups.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 하하. 보통, 회사에서 회식할 때는 집에 가기가 진짜 힘들죠 하하.
Hyunwoo: Exactly. 그런데 이건, I think it's not only with companies, but 친구들하고 있을 때에도 마찬가지예요.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 사람들이 많이 잡아요. 집에 가지 말라고… 같이 놀자고…
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. I think it's a good aspect about Korean culture, but at the same time, it's not always good.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 힘들어요, 하하.
Hyunwoo: I think Korean people are not very good at accepting it when someone says he's busy, and has to go home.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 같이 있고 싶으니까 그렇죠.
Hyunwoo: Right. It's also because they want to spend some more time together, but still, I think we usually ask our friends who are about to leave early, about three times - can you stay a little longer? Can you stay a little longer? Why don't you stay a little longer ? Haha.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah. 그래서 저는 현우 씨랑 술 마시러 가면 제가 맨날 집에 늦게 가잖아요. I always end up going home really late when you are among the people that I drink with.
Hyunwoo: Haha, I thought you were staying because you actually enjoyed hanging out with me but was it because I asked you to stay longer?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah…
Hyunwoo: Yes? Come on!
Gyeong-eun: 절 너무 좋아하시지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: Alright, I’ll try.

Gyeong-eun: (slow) 지름길. (fast) 지름길.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, this word means a shortcut, and it's actually a combination of two words.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 두 단어를 합친 거예요.
Hyunwoo: It's a combination of 지르다 and 길
Gyeong-eun: 네. 지르다 means “to go across something”,
Hyunwoo: and 길 means “road, street, way”.
Gyeong-eun: So 지르는 길 , 지름길.
Hyunwoo: 경은 씨는 지름길을 좋아하는 편이에요? 아니요, 큰 길을 좋아해요?
Gyeong-eun: I like using shortcuts, but I don't like looking for shortcuts.
Hyunwoo: Why?
Gyeong-eun: Because I get lost.
Hyunwoo: Haha, I am the opposite. I LOVE looking for shortcuts.
Gyeong-eun: You do? 그러면 왜 맨날 길을 잃어요? 하하.
Hyunwoo: I always get lost because I love looking for shortcuts and fail, almost always, haha.
Gyeong-eun: 그럼 그냥 지름길로 가지 말고, 아는 길로 가세요, 제발.
Hyunwoo: Do not use shortcuts and use the paths I know? I want to have more shortcuts that I know, so 그러니까 앞으로도 ‘이쪽으로 가면 빠르지 않을까?’ 하고 계속 갈 것 같아요.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 아는 길이라도 제대로 가셨으면 합니다, 하하.

Hyunwoo: 네! And what's the next word that we're looking at?
Gyeong-eun: 참다
Hyunwoo: “to put up with”, “to endure”
Gyeong-eun: (slow) 참다. (fast) 참다.
Hyunwoo: 경은 씨는 이 단어 많이 쓰세요,참다?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah I think I use this word a lot.
Hyunwoo: 예를 들어서 어떤 때요?
Gyeong-eun: For example, 너무 배고파서 못 참겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 하하. You're too hungry to endure it. You're too hungry to wait any longer without eating, right?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 지금도 배고파서 못 참겠어요.
Hyunwoo: 참으세요. 하하.
Gyeong-eun: 아니면, when I'm angry, but don't want to get upset, I say this. 이번엔 내가 참는다!!
Hyunwoo: 하하. This time, this time only, I'll forgive you.

Hyunwoo: Haha, so you can say 참다 for anything that you make an effort not to do, like smoking. “To try not to smoke” is,

Hyunwoo: Right, and there's a noun that you can make with the verb '참다', right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, right. 참을성
Hyunwoo: 참을성, which means “patience”.
Gyeong-eun: You say 참을성이 있다 / 참을성이 없다.
Hyunwoo: “to be patient” and “to be impatient” / How about going to the grammar point now?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요!
Hyunwoo: Okay!
Hyunwoo: So, what's the grammar point of this lesson, 경은 씨?
Gyeong-eun: -았/었/였으면 좋았을 텐데
Hyunwoo: as in the example?
Gyeong-eun: 학생 때 공부를 열심히 했으면 좋았을 텐데.
Hyunwoo: "It would have been nice if I had studied hard when I was a student." or "I should have studied hard in school."
Gyeong-eun: When you have regrets, and wish that you or someone had or had not done something in the past, you can use this grammatical structure,
Hyunwoo: which is?
Gyeong-eun: -았/었/였으면 좋았을 텐데
Hyunwoo: The last part, 좋았을 텐데 comes from 좋았을 터인데, and 터 refers to a situation, a place or a state, but it is also used to express assumption or intention.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, in this structure, -았/었/였으면 expresses the condition of "if it had been in a certain way" or "if someone had done something,"
Hyunwoo: Right! And 좋았을 텐데 means ?
Gyeong-eun: "It would have been nice."
Hyunwoo: Yeah, so all together, -았/었/였으면 좋았을 텐데, one more time?
Gyeong-eun: -았/었/였으면 좋았을 텐데
Hyunwoo: means "it would have been nice if ..." or "should have ..." or "if only...."
Gyeong-eun: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: But you know, if you want to say "you should have done something," there are other ways of saying this too.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, you can say -았/었/였어야 했어 or 해야 했어, but in that case, it's stronger.
Hyunwoo: Right. The nuance of this structure, -았/었/였으면 좋았을 텐데, is not as strong and imposing as that of -았/었/였어야 했어 or -해야 했어, since you are just making an assumption that it would have been nice.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: And before we look at some more examples, there's something you should remember.
Gyeong-eun: 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: You know, you can't form a formal sentence ending in -ㅂ니다 using this structure.
Gyeong-eun: 아하! 맞아요. you can't.
Hyunwoo: What I'm saying is, you can't say 좋았을 텐데입니다. or 좋았을 텁니다.
Gyeong-eun: 하하. That sounds funny.
Hyunwoo: Right, so In that case, people usually add 말입니다 (mar-imnida) at the end.
Gyeong-eun: 좋았을 텐데 말입니다.
Hyunwoo: Exactly! Okay, now let's look at how it was used in this lessons’ dialogue.
Gyeong-eun: 어제 일찍 잤으면 좋았을 텐데...
Hyunwoo: "If only I had gone to bed early yesterday."
Gyeong-eun: 회식이 일찍 끝났으면 좋았을 텐데...
Hyunwoo: "If only the company dinner had ended early."
Gyeong-eun: 그래도 어제 술만 조금 덜 마셨으면 좋았을 텐데...
