Keith: Why is it my fault? It’s your fault.
Seol: Everything is your fault.
Hyunwoo: Calm down, calm down. Don’t fight.
Seol: Keith 잘못이에요. 내 잘못 아니에요. You always are like this.
Hyunwoo: 무슨 일이에요, 무슨 일?
Keith: So is not the judge over here okay. I am the judge.
Seol: Oh really, okay. It’s not your fault.
Keith: It’s not my fault, okay. 오늘 이야기는 뭐에 대해서 말하는 거예요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 민호가 인성이한테 지갑주인 김소연이라는 여학생 있죠? 예쁘지 않느냐고 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. 연락해볼까 말까 하면서.
Seol: 근데 민호 되게 나쁜 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 왜요?
Seol: 지난번에 안 예쁘다고 되게 불친절했잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠.
Seol: 근데 지금은 또 예쁘다고 막 연락해볼까 말까 이러고.
Keith: No I think 소연 is pretty hot.
Seol: But that does not make 민호 is okay or 민호 was behaving himself.
Keith: I don’t know 여자가 예쁘면 I don’t know. I think I want to call too.
Seol: Oh man!
Keith: All right. Well, yeah that’s what today’s lesson is about. Today’s conversation is between 민호 and 인성. 그래서 반말 쓰는 거예요. And in addition to that, remember to watch out for today’s grammar points 지 말다 a sentence ending negative imperative for those of you keeping track of the grammar. It just means don’t do something, something. All right, so let’s listen in.
DIALOGUE
(1)선생님: 자, 오늘 수업은 여기까지. 다음 주에 봅시다.
(2)학생들: 감사합니다!
(3)민호: 인성아, 인성아! 그 ... 여자애 있잖아, 김소연, 예쁘지 않냐?
(4)인성: 또 그 얘기야?
(5)민호: 또 그 얘기가 아니라... 진짜 예쁘잖아!
(6)인성: 안 예쁘다고 말한 건 누구였지?
(7)민호: 야! 그건 내 잘못이 아니라, 사진이 이상했잖아!
(8)인성: 아무튼! 난 별로 알고 싶지 않으니까, 마음대로 해.
(9)민호: 아... 다시 한 번 전화해 볼까?
(10)인성: 또 30분 늦으려고?
(11)민호: 뭐?!
(12)인성: 예쁜 여자만 좋아하지 말고, 공부 해, 공부!

Keith: Hey, Inseong, Inseong! Wasn’t that girl... Kim Soyeon pretty?

Keith: You're talking about her again?
(5)민호: 또 그 얘기가 아니라... 진짜 예쁘잖아!
Keith: No, it’s not that again. But she was pretty!
(6)인성: 안 예쁘다고 말한 건 누구였지?
Keith: Who was the one that said she wasn't pretty?
(7)민호: 야! 그건 내 잘못이 아니라, 사진이 이상했잖아!
Keith: No, that wasn’t my fault! The picture was weird.
(8)인성: 아무튼! 난 별로 알고 싶지 않으니까, 마음대로 해.
Keith: Anyway! I don't really care about it, so do whatever you want.
(9)민호: 아... 다시 한 번 전화해 볼까?
Keith: Ah... should I call her again?

Keith: So you want to be 30 minutes late again?

Keith: What?
(12)인성: 예쁜 여자만 좋아하지 말고, 공부 해, 공부!
Keith: Don’t just go around chasing girls, and study!
(13)민호: 뭐? 너 이리 와!
Keith: What? Hey, come over here.
(14)인성: 내가 틀린 말 했냐?
Keith: What did I say something wrong?

Keith: 현우씨, 대화는 어땠어요?
Hyunwoo: 아, 재밌었는데 역시 설씨 말처럼 민호가 좀 못된 것 같아요.
Seol: 그렇죠? 민호 못됐어요. Keith같아요.
Keith: Wait...
Seol: 예쁜 여자는 다 봐 주고 안 예쁜 여자들한테는 나쁘게 굴고.
Keith: 그럼 나는 누나한테 어떻게 해? 봐 줘?
Seol: 착하게 굴어.
Keith: I don’t understand why they are fighting 왜 싸웠죠?
Seol: 인성은 착해서 공부나 하라고 충고하잖아요. 민호는 못돼서 충고를 못 받아들이는 거예요. 내가 뭐? 내가 뭐? 이렇게.
Hyunwoo: 너 이리 와 이러면서 싸움이 시작됐죠.
Keith: Wait, so 너 이리와. Those are fighting words kind of?
Hyunwoo: Kind of, in most cases.
Seol: 그런 것 같아요.
Keith: 너 이리 와.
Seol: 너 일루 와. 너 일루 와.
Keith: Well actually we are going to cover that word in the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Let’s go in a little more detail with these vocabulary words. 그 첫 번째 단어는 뭐였어요?
Hyunwoo: 여자애
Keith: And this means girl, but you can break it down a little further.
Hyunwoo: And this comes from 여자 아이. 여자 means female and 아이or 애 is a kid. So if you look up the word girl in the English Korean dictionary, you will see the word 소녀 but 여자애 is the word that is more often used.
Keith: So female kid, 설 같지 않아요? 여자애?
Hyunwoo: 설은...여자애?
Keith: Female kid.
Hyunwoo: 아가씨
Seol: Thank you.
Hyunwoo: 설은 아가씨라고 부를 수 있겠죠?
Seol: But I prefer 여자애.
Keith: 여자애?
Hyunwoo: 정말요?
Seol: Umm.
Hyunwoo: 이제부터 여자애라고 불러 드릴까요?
Seol: Thank you very much.
Keith: 근데 여자애는 좀 진짜 젊은 느낌
Seol: 예
Keith: 들지 않아요?
Seol: 예를 들어서 13살, 14살 여자아이도 꼬마애도 여자애고 그 다음에
Hyunwoo: 18살까지? 고등학생까지?
Seol: 18살? 뭐 20살?
Hyunwoo: 대학생한테 여자애라고 하면 조금 화낼 것 같아요.
Seol: Not me.
Keith: So yeah it’s 여자애 kind of refers to girls around up until high school.
Seol: Yes
Keith: 그 다음 단어는요?
Hyunwoo: 아무튼
Seol: 나 이 단어 정말 좋아하거든요, 아무튼.
Hyunwoo: 아무튼
Seol: 아무튼
Hyunwoo: 암튼
Seol: 암튼
Hyunwoo: 빨리 말하면
Seol: 이거를 빨리 귀엽게 암튼 이렇게 말하는 경향이 있어요. 여자들은.
Keith: 그 귀엽게 만드는 거예요? 아니면 그냥 빨리 말하고 싶으니까?
Seol: 둘 다.
Hyunwoo: 둘 다. 그리고 아무튼이라고 말하고 싶어도 말하다 보면 암튼이 되는거죠.
Keith/Hyunwoo: Really. It’s supposed to be 아무튼 but if you just kind of say it quickly, 아무튼, 아무튼, 암튼. It just kind of merges into two syllables instead of three 암튼 and 이거 어떻게 쓰는 거예요? How do you use this?
Seol: Anyway하고 똑같은 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 이야기를 바꾸고 싶을 때 말하다가 아,더 이상 듣고 싶지 않다.
Seol: 암튼
Keith: 암튼. So 설 uses with me a lot. When I am talking, she doesn’t want to hear what I am saying 아무튼 next any way.
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: All right. Our next word is
Hyunwoo: 마음대로
Keith: As one wishes. Literally this means by your heart 마음 heart 대로 by. So by your heart or follow your heart but this means as you wish or as you want or as I wish or as I want.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 마음대로라고 하면 왠지 부정적인 의미가 많이 있어요.
Seol: 예를 들어서 Keith랑 나랑 레스토랑에 갔어요. 나는 김밥이 먹고 싶은데 Keith는 김치찌개를 먹고 싶대요. 그러면 제가 ‘Keith 너 마음대로 해. 네 마음대로 먹어.’라고 말하면 약간 퉁명스럽고 그렇지만 whatever you want, you can have 그런 의미예요.
Keith: So 마음대로 just as you want, as you wish. Follow your heart.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 부정적으로 ‘하지 마.’라고 할 때 ‘마음대로 만지지 마.’
Seol: 아, 그런 뜻도 있구나.
Hyunwoo: Don’t just touch it 또는 마음대로 가지 마, 마음대로 오지 마 이렇게 말할 수 있겠죠.
Keith: If it’s followed by a verb, you do the verb as you wish 마음대로 먹어 eat as you wish or eat as I wish but if it’s followed by a negative verb, don’t do as you wish, don’t do as you want
Hyunwoo: 마음대로 먹지 마.
Keith/Hyunwoo: Don’t eat whatever you want. All right our next word is
Hyunwoo: 이리
Keith: This way 이 원래 단어는 뭐예요?
Seol: 여기로
Keith: Here too, here too but it’s shortened to 이리.
Hyunwoo: 이리의 반대말은 뭐죠?
Seol: 저리
Keith/Hyunwoo: 네, 이리와 저리를 함께 말하면?
Seol: 이리저리
Hyunwoo: Here and there.
Seol: Wow!
Keith: Wow! That was very good.
Hyunwoo: 이리저리, 재밌는 발음이죠?
Keith: Here or there, here or there. So 이리 is over here. Now this is almost always used with an imperative verb 그래서 오늘 대화에는 어떻게 나왔죠?
Hyunwoo: ‘이리 와.’라고 했죠.
Keith: 너 이리 와. You this way come.
Hyunwoo: You come over here.
Keith: Yeah and those are some fighting words.
Seol: It’s scary. 너무 무서워요.
Keith: Why?
Seol: 너 이리 와 하면 좀 무서워요.
Hyunwoo: 너 이리 와.
Seol: 선생님이 저 잘못했을 때 ‘설, 너 이리 와.’ 엄마 아빠가 저 잘못했을 때 ‘설, 너 이리 와.’ 할 때 그 느낌이에요.
Keith: So people in a power of position, they use this often 너 이리 와. come here.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 반대로 여자가 귀엽게 말하면 좀 사랑스럽게 들릴 수도 있는 거 같아요. 한 번 설씨?
Seol: 해 볼까요?
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 이리 와 이리 와.
Hyunwoo: 귀엽죠?
Keith: That’s cute.
Hyunwoo: That’s cute.
Keith: Cute yeah. If girls say it, sometimes it’s cute but I think maybe with the deep voice 목소리가 깊으면?
Hyunwoo: 이리 와.
Keith: 좀 무섭죠? It’s a little scary.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그리고 예전에 저는 강아지가 한 마리 있었는데 강아지한테 항상 이리 와, 이리 와라고 말하곤 했어요.
Keith: That’s kind of cute 좀 귀여워요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그래서 여기로 와 보다는 이리 와를 많이 들을 수 있을 거예요.
Keith: Right but remember it’s almost always used in conjunction with an imperative verb.
Hyunwoo: Keith, 그런데 이리 와의 반대말이 뭔지 아세요?
Keith: 저리 가.
Hyunwoo: 저리 가.
Seol: Wow!
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 저리 가.
Keith: Just like this, that and there 이거, 그거, 저거, 이/그/저 you can add this with 리, 이리, 저리.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 그리. 그리는 자주 쓰이지는 않지만 말하면 알아들을 수 있을 거예요. 이리, 저리, 그리.
Keith: Yeah. I don’t think I’ve ever heard 그리.
Hyunwoo: 보통은 그 곳, 거기 이렇게 말하죠.
Keith: Okay so most of the time it’s 이리 or 저리. All right 마지막 단어는 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: 틀리다
Keith: To be wrong. 근데 쓸 때는 가끔 다르다
Seol: 헷갈려요. 다르다와 틀리다.
Keith: 다르다와 틀리다 많이 헷갈리죠?
Seol: 네, 헷갈려요.
Keith: 저도
Seol: 저도 헷갈려요.
Hyunwoo: 설씨, 틀리다의 반대말은 뭐죠?
Seol: 맞다
Hyunwoo: 그러면 다르다의 반대말은 뭐죠?
Seol: 같다
Hyunwoo: 안 헷갈리시는데요.
Seol: 음, 근데 실제로 말하다 보면 가끔 저도 틀리게 써요.
Keith: All right. So can you give us an example of the way that many Koreans use it but it’s actually incorrect?
Hyunwoo: 이름이 같다의 반대말은?
Seol: 이름이 다르다
Hyunwoo: 그런데 보통
Seol: 이름이 틀리다
Hyunwoo: 이렇게 말하죠. 가격이 틀리다.
Keith: The prices are wrong.
Seol: 예를 들어서 똑같은 사과인데 얘는 150원 얘는 300원 가격이 왜 틀리지?라고 말하잖아요. 근데 사실은 왜 가격이 다르지?라고 말해야 되는데. 한국 사람들도 헷갈려요. 맨날 틀려요.
Keith: There is two apples, two different prices but instead of saying why is the price different we say why is the price wrong 왜 틀려요?
Hyunwoo: 항상 쓰이는 말인데 사실 옪지 않아요. 틀리다의 반대말은 맞다 또는 옳다. 그래서 같다의 반대말은 다르다라는 거 기억하세요.
Keith: All right. So let’s move on to our grammar points. 오늘의 grammar point가 뭐예요?
Seol: 고 고
Keith: That’s it 그거만?
Seol: 문장 + 고
Keith: Okay that’s excellent.
Hyunwoo: 앞에 동사가 오죠. 동사 + 고라고 하면
Keith: That’s reported speech. So you have a verb and then 고 reported speech.
Hyunwoo: 예를 들어서 설은 오늘 영화를 본다고 했어.
Keith: 설 said she is watching a movie today. 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Hyunwoo: 안 예쁘다고 말하다.
Keith: Not pretty 고 reported speech to say 말하다. So the way you construct this is, you take a verb and then you add 고. Then that’s it. Just like having quotations.
Hyunwoo: That’s right. 날씨가 춥다고 말하다.
Keith: You said the weather was cold.
Seol: 밥을 먹었다고 말했다.
Keith: You said you ate food.
Hyunwoo: 오늘 영화를 본다고 말했다.
Keith: You said you are going to watch a movie and just like in English, when you have reported speech, you say, John said, something, something 한국말도 똑같아요.You say 뭐뭐다고 뭐뭐고and then 말했어요 but 가끔씩
Seol: 말 빼 버리기도 해요. 뭐뭐라고 했어. 그래서 현우씨는 오늘 친구 만난다고 했어. Keith는 오늘 약속 있다고 했어.
Keith: 근데 원래는 어떻게 말해야 돼요?
Seol: 현우씨는 오늘 친구 만난다고 말했어.
Keith: 말했어, said. All right, so grammar point #2 is
Seol: 지 말다
Keith: The negative imperative 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Seol: 예쁜 여자만 좋아하지 말고 공부 해 공부! Keith, 예쁜 여자만 좋아하지 말고 일 해 일!
Keith: So the negative imperative, don’t do this and the construction of this is very simple, verb stem and 지 말다 very simple. 그 말다의 동사는 무슨 뜻이에요?
Seol: 그만두다 멈추다 stop 그런 뜻이에요.
Keith: To stop yeah. Verb stem plus 지 and then 말다 to stop. All right and in today’s conversation, it was
Seol: 좋아하지 마
Keith: Don’t like. 인성 was telling 민호 to not like pretty girls. Why!
Hyunwoo: 여기서는 예쁜 여자만. Only pretty girls.
Keith: Only pretty girls okay.
Seol: So it basically means he should like ugly girls too?
Hyunwoo: 아니요. 그게 아니라 좋아하는 것만 하지 말고 공부도 하라는 뜻이죠.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: 예쁜 여자 All right 예쁜 여자만 좋아하지 마. Don’t just like pretty girls 좋아하지 마. That’s the intimate politeness level 인성 and 민호, they are on intimate politeness level terms. What’s the standard politeness level?
Seol: 좋아하지 마요
Keith: Standard politeness level, just add the politeness marker 요. And next is
Seol: 좋아하지 마세요
Keith: Same thing except we have the honorific infix 시, 하지 마세요 and finally we have the formal politeness level.
Seol: 좋아하지 마십시오. This is really formal.
Keith: 이거는 왕한테 말하는 거 아니에요?
Seol: 어, 그럴지도 몰라요.
Keith: 현우씨, 예를 좀 들어 보세요.
Hyunwoo: 설씨, 저한테 전화하지 마세요.
Keith: Please don’t call me.
Seol: 네, 알겠어요. 현우씨도 밤에 저 보고 싶다고 울지 마세요.
Keith: Don’t cry at night saying you miss me. That was good, that was good.
Seol: No…
Hyunwoo: 억울해
