Keith: Hi Keith here. Where is the Library? All right, 유진, today is your first day. Welcome to the show. Thank you for coming.
Yujin: Yeah, thank you for welcoming me.
Seol: 환영합니다.
Yujin: 감사합니다.
Keith: Seol, you are excited 기쁘죠?
Seol: 네
Keith: 왜요?
Seol: 유진 예뻐서.
Yujin: 무슨 소리예요?
Seol: 저는 예쁜 사람 잘생긴 사람 좋아해요. Keith도 잘생겨서 좋아하거든요.
Keith: Okay, hey that’s part of our grammar point of today.
Seol: 정말?
Keith: 그래서 오늘의 얘기는 뭐예요?
Seol: 소연이 지갑을 찾으러 그 학교에 와서 도서관을 찾고 있어요.
Keith: 처음 만나는 사람이니까 존댓말 쓰겠죠?
Seol: 네

이 학교는 왜 이렇게 크지? 도서관이 어디지? (인성을 보고) 아! 저기요!

(3)소연: 네. 죄송하지만, 도서관이 어디예요?
(4)인성: 아, 도서관이요? 음, 저쪽이에요.
(5)소연: 저쪽이요? 아, 네... 감사합니다.
(6)인성: 이 학교 학생 아니세요?
(7)소연: 네... 지갑 찾으러 왔어요.
(8)인성: 지갑이요?
(9)소연: 네. 제가 지갑을 잃어 버렸는데, 이 학교 학생이 주웠거든요. 그래서 받으러 왔어요.

Keith: Ah... I'm tired. Why is this school so big? Where is the library? Oh, excuse me!

Keith: What? Me?
(3)소연: 네. 죄송하지만, 도서관이 어디예요?
Keith: Yes, I'm sorry but where is the library?
(4)인성: 아, 도서관이요? 음, 저쪽이에요.
Keith: Oh, the library? Hmm... it's that way.
(5)소연: 저쪽이요? 아, 네... 감사합니다.
Keith: That way? Oh, okay. Thank you.
(6)인성: 이 학교 학생 아니세요?
Keith: You're not a student at this school?
(7)소연: 네... 지갑 찾으러 왔어요.
Keith: I came to get my wallet back.

Keith: Your wallet?
(9)소연: 네. 제가 지갑을 잃어 버렸는데, 이 학교 학생이 주웠거든요. 그래서 받으러 왔어요.
Keith: Yeah, I lost my wallet. And you see a student of this school found it. So I came to get it.

Keith: There're a lot of people losing wallets recently.

Keith: Excuse me?
(12)인성: 아, 아니에요. 아무것도 아니에요. 저... 그럼 저는 이쪽으로 가볼께요.
Keith: Oh, no. It's nothing. Then... I am this way.
(13)소연: 아... 네. 감사합니다.

Keith: 설씨, 어땠어요?
Seol: 소연과 인성이 처음으로 만났어요. 왠지 둘 사이에 뭔가가 생길 것 같아서 기대돼요.
Keith: 어떻게 알아요 그거?
Seol: 영화에나 티비에서 많이 나오잖아요. 우연히 만나는 거. 유진은 학교에서 이렇게 사람들 우연히 만나본 적 있어요?
Yujin: 저는 안타깝게도 이런 우연을 가장한 만남이 없어서 솔직히 이걸 보고 부러웠어요.
Keith: Yeah. Since we are talking about academics, let’s go into the vocab. Eugene, can you help us out?
Yujin: Sure.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay. 이런 단어에 대해서 더 자세하게 말해 봅시다. The first word we have is
Seol: 힘들다
Keith: And this means to be tired or fatigued. 근데 이거 어떤 상황에 쓰는 거예요? 왜냐하면 ‘피곤하다’도 tired죠?
Yujin: 이 말은 두 가지 말이 합해져 있는데요 조금 어려운 얘기일 수도 있는데요. 힘 power그런 것들이 들다라는 한국어가 같이 있는건데 그렇기 때문에 뭔가 정신적인 힘, 육체적인 힘이 들 경우 힘들다 많이 사용하는 편이에요. 한국 사람들도 아 힘들어 힘들다 많이 사용해요.
Keith: Okay yeah so exactly what you said. Yeah so the first part is 힘 and that means power and 들다 means to take. So literally it’s like draining your power. So can we have a couple of sample sentences?
Seol: 나 어제 달리기를 너무 오래 해서 몸이 힘들어.
Keith: Yesterday I ran a race so long that my body is tired and that’s physically tired. Let’s have a mentally tired.
Yujin: 나 내일 발표가 있어서 힘들어.
Keith: Tomorrow I have a presentation. So I am tired 준비하느라고요.
Yujin: 네, 준비하는데 있어서 내용도 준비해야 하고 정신적으로도 준비해야 하고 여러가지 면에 있어서 힘들게 되는 거 같아요.
Keith: So it can be used for physical and mental stress. Next let’s go with
Seol: 저쪽
Keith: And this can be broken down as well.
Seol: 저 쪽
Keith: What’s the first syllable
Seol: 저
Keith: And 저 as in 이/그/저 is that, that over there. So 저 that followed by
Seol: 쪽
Keith: Way. So that way. And our next word is also the same thing. Instead of that way, it’s this way and that is
Seol: 이쪽
Keith: Next. Let’s go with 아무것도. Now this can also be broken down as well. The first part we have is
Yujin: 아무
Keith: Any
Yujin: 것
Keith: Thing
Yujin: 도
Keith: Also. So anything also. And when you use this, it’s just used like nothing.
Yujin: Yes 그렇게 많이 사용해요.
Keith: 예를 좀 들어 보세요.
Seol: Keith, 지금 뭐 해?
Keith: 아무것도 안 해. I am not doing anything.
Seol/Yujin: Like these.
Keith: So literally 아무것도 means anything but we use it as nothing because we always need a negative word with it. So there is 안, 못, 없다, 모르다, 아니다 and these are all negative words that you use in conjunction with 아무것도 anything. So literally it’s anything but we use it as nothing because we also need that negative word. So let’s have a couple of sample sentences.
Seol/: 나는 브레드 피트에 대해서 아무것도 몰라.
Keith: I know nothing about Brad Pitt and the negative word there was
Seol: 몰라
Keith: Don’t know.
Yujin: 나는 휴일날 아무것도 안 해.
Keith: On my off days, I don’t do anything. So what’s the negative word there?
Yujin: 안
Keith: Okay let’s have another sample sentence.
Seol: 나는 아무것도 안 먹을래.
Keith: I don’t want to eat anything 아무것도, 안. That’s the negative word right there not. Well 왜요? 왜 아무것도 안 먹어요?
Seol: 다이어트 하려고요.
Keith: 다이어트 무슨 다이어튼데. 필요 없는데. Okay.
Seol: 자, grammar point로 넘어가 볼까요?
Keith: Ok. 좋아요. 첫 번째 grammar point는요?
Seol: 으러 오다
Keith: Come in order to or come for the reason of. How do we make this?
Yujin: 대부분 동사와 같이 사용해요. 그래서 찾으러 오다, 공부하러 오다, 식사하러 오다.
Keith: And it’s a very simple construction. All you do is take the verb stem and add 러 오다 if it ends in a vowel. If it ends in a consonant, 으러 오다.
Seol: 으러 오다에서 오다는 움직임을 나타내는 동사 다른 걸로도 바뀔 수 있어요. 예를 들어서 영화 보러 가다, 밥 먹으러 가다, 공부하러 가다.
Keith: So 오다 and 가다 are both movement verbs. 다른 거 또 있어요?
Seol: 보통은 오다, 가다가 제일 많이 쓰여요.
Keith: There is not many other verbs that are used in this construction. 별로 없죠?
Yujin: 별로 없는 거 같아요.
Keith: Let’s have a couple of sample sentences.
Seol: 유진, 내일 영화 보러 갈래?
Yujin: 미안. 나 내일 공부하러 학교 가.
Keith: Can we have that sentence again?
Yujin: 미안. 나 내일 공부하러 학교 가.
Keith: We added 학교 in the middle of the construction and that’s because that’s where she is going. So if you are going somewhere, then you can add it into the middle of that construction right before 오다 or right before 가다.
Seol: Keith, 내일 뭐 해? 나랑 영화 보러 갈래?
Keith: 일하러 회사 가.
Seol: 아무도 나랑 안 놀아 줘.
Keith: So sorry 됐거든?
Seol: Oh my god! This is our next grammar point right?
Keith: Our next grammar point is
Seol: 됐거든
Keith: 됐거든 아닌데?
Yujin: 거든요
Keith: Thank you. 거든요 now this construction is used to provide a reason or explanation. So if you are talking about something, if you feel the need to give an explanation of something, then yeah you use this construction. So let’s have a couple of sample sentences.
Yujin: 설아, 너 왜 점심밥 안 먹어?
Seol: 아, 집에서 밥 먹고 왔거든요.
Keith: Why aren’t you eating? I ate at home. You see. So this grammatical construction can be translated as in fact or you see and then you give your reason.
Seol: 어제 무슨 일 있었어요? 피곤해 보여요.
Yujin: 어, 어제 늦게 잤거든.
Keith: I slept late you see or I slept late in fact. 근데 이거 억양을 좀 조심해야 되죠?
Seol: 네, 저처럼 됐거든요? 이렇게 말하면 안 돼요.
Yujin: 조심해야 돼요.
Keith: 그 억양을 그렇게 하면 무슨 뜻으로 써요?
Seol: 예를 들어서 Keith가 나한테 ‘설, 밥 먹을래?’ 그런데 내가 ‘됐거든?’ 이러면 Keith 기분 나빠져요.
Keith: It’s kind of like building a shield around you right?
Yujin: 아, 사실 원래 이런 이유나 설명을 사용하는 말로 잘 사용했는데 한 번은 개그 프로그램에 한국에서 한 개그 프로그램에 개그맨이 나와서 됐거든이라는 유행어를 사용했기 때문에 그 이후로 됐거든이라는 표형을 사용하면 상대방이 기분 나빠해요.
Keith: All right. So it’s kind of like a set phrase right?
Yujin: 그렇죠. 네.
Keith: So can we break that down?
Yujin: 됐거든
Keith: And this is it’s all right you see or it’s all right in fact and it doesn’t sound too bad in English but in Korean, it’s kind of 좀 안 좋은 거죠?
Yujin: 네, 그 개그맨이 말한 이후로 설이가 얘기한 것처럼 ‘관심같지 마. 됐거든?’ 이렇게 얘기해요.
Keith: So when you don’t want someone to be interested in you, when you don’t want anyone to care about you in any way, just say 됐거든 I don’t need you. It kind of gives off that nuance.
Yujin: 그렇죠. 네, 혹시 관심있는 분들은 웃음을 찾는 사람들, 웃찾사에 됐거든 코너를 참고하시면 됩니다.
