INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here. A Favor.
Seol: 여러분들 첫 번째 이야기 기억하세요? 소연이 지갑을 잃어 버려서 막 울었잖아요.
Keith: And yeah, this is the next installment. 오늘 이야기는 뭐에 대해서 말할까요?
Seol: 민호랑 인성이가 소연이의 지갑을 주웠는데 그 주운 지갑에 대해서 누가 돌려줄까 얘기하고 있어요.
Keith: These two males are going to be the 주인 of the story.
Seol: Keith는 지갑 주워본 적 있어요?
Keith: 그런 적이 없어요. 근데 설씨는 지갑을 잃어버린 적이 많죠?
Seol: 네. 제 지갑에 있는 제 사진 보고 남자들한테 연락 많이 왔었는데.
Keith: 그만 좀 하십쇼.
Seol: Believe it or not.
Keith: All right. So let’s get into this conversation.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더
(1)민호: 야, 야, 야, 인성아.
Keith: Hey, hey, hey, Inseong.
(2)인성: 왜?
Keith: What?
(3)민호: 부탁 하나만 할게.
Keith: I got a favor to ask.
(4)인성: 부탁? 무슨 부탁?
Keith: A favor? What kind of favor?
(5)민호: 나 어제 ...
Keith: You see yesterday...
(6)인성: (민호의 손을 보면서) 어? 이거 뭐야, 여자 지갑 아니야?
Keith: Huh? What's this? Isn't it a girl's wallet?
(7)민호: 응... 어제 주웠어. 근데 니가 좀 돌려 줘.
Keith: Yeah, I picked it up yesterday. But can you return it?
(8)인성: 뭐? 내가? 왜 내가 돌려 줘? 니가 주웠잖아.
Keith: What? Me? Why should I return it? You picked it up.
(9)민호: 하하하. 내가 여자들 앞에서 말을 잘 못 하잖아. 수줍어서...
Keith: Hahaha. You know I can't speak in front of girls. I'm shy...
(10)인성: (의심의 눈초리) 너... 진짜 이유가 뭐야? (지갑을 열면서) 음... 뭐야 이거... 민호 너 ...
Keith: Really... what's your reason? Hmm... What's this? Minho...
(11)민호: (뭔가 찔리는 목소리) 뭐...?
Keith: What...?
(12)인성: 이 사진 때문이야? 별로 안 예뻐서 만나기 싫어?
Keith: Is it because of this picture? You don't want to meet her because she's not very pretty?
(13)민호: 야, 그게 아니라...
Keith: No, it's not that...
(14)인성: (지갑을 돌려 주면서) 됐어! 니가 돌려 줘. 나 바빠. 먼저 간다. 안녕!
Keith: Whatever. You return it. I'm busy. I'm going. See ya!
(15)민호: (인성이를 쫓아가면서) 야! 인성아!! 야!!!
Keith: Hey, Inseong! Hey!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: 대화는 어땠어요?
Seol: 민호가 너무 수줍어해서 제 마음도 수줍어졌어요.
Keith: 한국 여자니까?
Seol: 네.
Keith: 근데 민호는 좀 못되지 않았어요?
Seol: 왜요?
Keith: 그 사진 보고 안 돌려준다고.
Seol: 아, 소연씨가 사진에서 별로 안 예뻤나 보다.
Keith: 그러니까요. 못됐잖아요.
Seol: 못됐어요.

Keith: To be shy, timid.
Seol: 수줍다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 수줍다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And last we have
Seol: 먼저
Keith: First or in advance.
Seol: 먼저 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 먼저 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: All right. Let’s go into a little more detail with these vocabulary words and phrases. 첫 번째 단어는?
Seol: 부탁
Keith: We can use this in several different ways right? One way is
Seol: 부탁하다
Keith: To ask a favor.
Seol: 부탁 좀 들어 주세요.
Keith: Please do this favor for me.
Seol: 부탁이 있다
Keith: I have a favor. In Korean, there is a very useful phrase that we use and it’s 잘 부탁합니다 or
Seol: 잘 부탁드립니다.
Keith: And this is the same. I ask a favor of you, please do this for me. 근데 어떤 상황에 쓸까요?
Seol: 예를 들어서 제가 신입사원이고 오늘이 제가 처음으로 출근한 날이였어요. 그러면 사람들에게 잘 부탁드립니다라고 인사해요.
Keith: And that’s because you want good relationship. So you are asking people before you actually start working, 잘 부탁드립니다. So you are asking the other people to take care of you kind of.
Seol: 그리고 저도 자주 Keith한테 부탁하잖아요.
Keith: 어떤 거?
Seol: Keith, 나 대본 안 가지고 왔어. 대본 print out 해 줘. Keith, 나 부탁 하나만 들어 줘. 나 이거 먹고 싶은데 이거 사 줘.
Keith: 설은 누나잖아요 근데.
Seol: 동생같은 누나.
Keith: 동생같은 누나. Okay. Our next word is
Seol: 줍다
Keith: The conjugation for this verb is irregular. The reason for this is because of the ㅂ. ㅂ 받침 때문에. The conjugation is irregular. The verb stem is
Seol: 줍
Keith: We take that ㅂ and then it becomes
Seol: 우
Keith: So now we have
Seol: 주우
Keith: And then you just add on the conjugation on to the end of that 우. 이 대화에는 과거형으로 나왔죠?
Seol: 주웠어.
Keith: And that’s the past tense conjugation. What are some other examples?
Seol: 춥다
Keith: To be cold. So we take that verb stem
Seol: 춥
Keith: Now we take that ㅂ and it changes to
Seol: 우
Keith: So now we have
Seol: 추우
Keith: And you just add on the conjugation to that. 과거형 conjugation은 어떻게 해요?
Seol: 추웠어
Keith: 반말이잖아요.
Seol: 추웠어요
Keith: Okay next word we have is
Seol: 원래
Keith: Now here we have a irregular pronunciation but it’s not so irregular. It’s kind of natural. What’s the first syllable?
Seol: 원
Keith: And the second syllable
Seol: 래
Keith: What’s that first syllable again?
Seol: 원
Keith: 받침이 ㄴ이잖아요. 바로 그 다음은 ㄹ이니까.
Seol: 그 ㄹ 때문에 앞에 있는 ㄴ이 ㄹ처럼 되는 거군요.
Keith: 그렇죠. 한국에 있는 동네도 이런거 되게 많죠?
Seol: 저 예전에 신림동에서 살았었거든요.
Keith: 신림동. 그런데 또 그 ㄴ이 ㄹ로 바뀌었죠?
Seol: 네. 그래서 실림동이라고 발음해요.
Keith: 그리고 또 다른 동네는요?
Seol: 아, Keith가 좋아하는 강남에는 선릉이라고 하는 역이 있어요. 거기도 원래는 선릉이였는데 그게 설릉으로 발음돼요.
Keith: So this ㄴ changes to ㄹ any time there is ㄹ right after that. Okay our last word we have is
Seol: 먼저
Keith: First or in advance. 이거 자주 쓰는 표현이죠?
Seol: 네. 예를 들어서 Keith랑 저랑 일 하다가 제가 먼저 가는 경우가 있어요. Keith, 미안한데 나 약속이 있어서 먼저 갈게.
Keith: So you are going before me. You are going first, you are going in advance. So whenever you are doing something before someone, you use 먼저.
Seol: 학교에 제일 먼저 도착했어요.
Keith: I came to school before anyone else did.
Seol: 따르르릉 엄마 나 설인데, 오늘 늦게 갈 거니까 저녁 먼저 먹어.
Keith: I am going to be late. So you eat first.

Lesson focus

Keith: Okay so let’s take a look at today’s grammar point. What is today’s grammar point?
Seol: 뭐뭐잖아.
Keith: And this grammatical structure means you know. 그런 뜻이죠?
Seol: 네.
Keith: 이거 언제 쓰는 거예요?
Seol: 내 생각에 나도 알고 Keith도 아는 거. 그래서 Keith, 너 어제 데이트 했잖아. 그래서 나도 어제 Keith가 데이트 한 거 알고 Keith 자신도 자기가 데이트 한 걸 아는 경우에.
Keith: So you use this grammatical structure when you know something and the other party knows something or you assume the other party knows something. For example, if I went to play basketball yesterday and I told Seol that I was going to play basketball, the next day I show up at work and ah, I am so tired. You say, why are you tired? 내가 농구 했잖아. Because I play basketball, you know that too. I know that, you know that. The way you construct this is, you take the verb stem and you just add 잖아 very simple.
Seol: 쉽잖아. I know easy you know it is easy.
Keith: Yeah very simple. So let’s have a couple of examples.
Seol: 나 내일 시험 보잖아.
Keith: Verb there is
Seol: 보다
Keith: We take the verb stem
Seol: 보
Keith: And now we add
Seol: 잖아
Keith: And now we have
Seol: 보잖아
Keith: Okay let’s have a example in the past tense?
Seol: 나 어제 영화 봤잖아.
Keith: The past tense infinitive is
Seol: 봤다
Keith: And now we have the verb stem
Seol: 봤
Keith: And now we add
Seol: 잖아
Keith: Altogether this is
Seol: 봤잖아
Keith: I saw you know. So our next grammar point is
Seol: 뭐뭐기 싫다
Keith: This means don’t want to do but that do is a verb. 그래서 그 뭐뭐는 동사죠. So this means don’t want to do and that do is a verb. So let’s have a couple of examples.
Seol: 공부하기 싫다.
Keith: Don’t want to study.
Seol: 집에 가기 싫다.
Keith: Don’t want to go home. All right, the way we use this grammatical structure is, we take a verb stem. Then we just add 기 싫다. Let’s break down those previous examples.
Seol: 공부하기 싫다
Keith: The verb there is
Seol: 공부하다
Keith: Verb stem
Seol: 공부하
Keith: Add 기 and now we have 공부하기 싫다. You should definitely remember this 동사 기 verb 기. The reason for this is because it turns the verb into a noun and this is very, very useful. You are going to be using this in a lot of grammatical structures in our intermediate series. Let’s break down that other example.
Seol: 집에 가기 싫다
Keith: Okay the verb there is
Seol: 가다
Keith: To go, the verb stem is
Seol: 가
Keith: And now we just add that grammatical structure.
Seol: 가기 싫다
Keith: Very simple. All right, our last grammar point of today is
Seol: 별로
Keith: This is an adverb and it means in particular or especially but the thing with this is, it’s a little tricky. It needs a negative word. So in reality, the translation for 별로 should be not in particular or not especially. So let’s have a couple of examples.
Seol: 별로 안 예쁘다
Keith: Let’s break that down really quick.
Seol: 별로
Keith: Especially
Seol: 안
Keith: Not.
Seol: 예쁘다
Keith: Pretty. So that 안 is that negative word that we need. We need negative word whenever we use 별로. Literally, it’s especially not pretty, not very pretty, not especially pretty. Another example is
Seol: 별로 재미 없다
Keith: Especially not fun 재미 없어. So what is that negative word?
Seol: 없다
Keith: Okay so the way we use this is we have 별로 and if it’s a verb that needs 안 to make it a negative verb, then we use 안 and then the verb or if it’s a verb that can use 없다, then it’s just 별로 something, something 없다 and there you have it. Not in particular, not especially 별로 안 어렵죠?
Seol: 네, 쉬워요.

Outro

Keith: Okay. 우리 여기까지?
Seol: 네 모두들 수고하셨습니다.
Keith: 수고하셨습니다. All right, that’s going to do it for today. 안녕히 계세요.
Seol: 안녕히 계세요.
