INTRODUCTION
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다.
Keith: Keith here. Mind Your Own Business. 그거 한국말로 어떻게 말해요?
Hyunwoo: 무슨 상관이야?
Keith: Literally what relation is it to you or what correlation?
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. 무슨 상관이야, 너랑 무슨 상관이야, 아니면 너랑 상관 없잖아 이렇게도 말하죠.
Keith: Oh!
Hyunwoo: 영어로는 또 어떻게 말해요?
Keith: Mind your own beeswax. And I think that’s kind of like late early 90s.
Hyunwoo: 진짜요? 몰랐어요. 다른 표현도 있어요?
Keith: Get your nose out of my business, something like that. So today we are going to go over couple of phrases to get those nosy people out of your business. Okay so 오늘의 대화는 무슨 내용이에요?
Hyunwoo: 민호가 소개팅에 가는 것 같아요.
Keith: 민호 is going on a blind date.
Hyunwoo: 네. Keith, 소개팅 많이 해 봤어요?
Keith: 해 본 적이 없어요.
Hyunwoo: 아 진짜요?
Keith: 현우씨는 해 봤어요?
Hyunwoo: 몇 번.
Keith: 어땠어요?
Hyunwoo: 음...저는 사실 별로 재미 없었어요. It’s not fun
Keith: Why not?
Hyunwoo: 그냥 소개해 준 친구가 자, 가자 해서 가요. 가서 또 소개받는 여자 친구가 나와서 자 둘이 얘기해 하고 집에 가는 거예요. 두 사람이서 안녕하세요. 전 선현우라고 합니다. 이름이…? 이렇게 하는거죠. 진짜 재미없어요.
Keith: 되게 어색하죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 진짜 어색하고 예 그래서 저는 이제 안 해요.
Keith: So it’s like here is a girl, here is my friend, he is a boy. Talk, I will see you later.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: Well 민호는 소개팅 좋아하는 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 열심히 하고 있어요.
Keith: All right. So 민호랑 인성이 얘기하니까 반말 쓰는 거죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 반말.
Keith: Okay so let’s listen in.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: 이번에는 영어와 함께

(5)민호: 소개팅이랑 돈이랑 무슨 상관이야! 요즘에는 여자애들도 자기 밥값은 자기가 낸다구!
Keith: What does it have to do with money? These days, girls pay for their own meal too!
(6)인성: 아- 그런가? 아무튼! 너무 많이 하는 거 아니야?
Keith: Is that so? Anyway! Don't you think you're going on too many blind dates?

(8)인성: 그래, 아무튼 행운을 빈다!
Keith: Right. Well, good luck!
(9)민호: 고맙다. 잘 되면 한 턱 쏠게!
Keith: Thanks. If it turns out well, dinner's on me!
(10)인성: 맨날 그 소리...! 제발 좀 잘 돼라!
Keith: You've said that before! Please, I do hope it turns out well.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: 현우씨, 어땠어요? 소개팅 다시 생각났어요?
Hyunwoo: 아...다시 해 볼까? 요즘 여자애들도 밥값을 자기가 낸다고 하는데...해 볼까요?
Keith: 오...그럼 현우씨 했을 때는?
Hyunwoo: 제가 다 냈죠.
Keith: Oh that’s like old school Korean, like the man pays for everything.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: 근데 요즘에는 여자들도 they pay for their own food too sometimes?
Hyunwoo: 예, 그런 것 같아요.
Keith: It’s a lot of Dutch pay, that’s what they say?
Hyunwoo: 예, 더치페이.
Keith: And that just means 50-50
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: 그런데 더치랑 무슨 상관인데요?
Hyunwoo: 음...한국 사람들한테 물어보면 아무도 몰라요.
Keith: Nobody knows what Dutch pay means literally.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그냥 따로 따로 내는 거? 내 거는 내가 네 거는 네가.
Keith: Umm Okay but we don’t know exactly what Dutch pay means but we actually do know the words that we are going to go over next. So let’s go in through the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay let’s take a look at some of these words in a little more detail. What’s our first word?
Hyunwoo: 멋지다
Keith: Oh thanks a lot 형.
Hyunwoo: Keith 멋지다.
Keith: Now this means to be cool like kool Keith with K but it’s not used as frequently as it is in English. In English, you know, you see a pencil and it’s like really fancy. Ah cool pencil, you know but Korean, it’s
Hyunwoo: 멋진 연필
Keith: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: No, no...it’s too textbook. 너무 교과서에 나오는 것 같아요. 그냥 평소에는 좋다라고 많이 하죠.
Keith: Yeah the pencil is good but 멋지다 is when you are really impressed.
Hyunwoo: 네, 멋진 Keith.
Keith: Thanks.
Hyunwoo: 예문이죠 예문.
Keith: Okay so yeah it’s not used as frequently as it is in English and if you are talking about 멋진 people 멋진 사람 then more 뭐 한 90% 정도는 남자죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 여자한테 ‘멋지다!’라고 하면 별로 안 좋아해요. ‘예쁘다’라고 해야 좋아하죠.
Keith: Yeah for men, it’s 멋지다 for women it’s 예쁘다 to be pretty.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: Okay next we have
Hyunwoo: 상관
Keith: Relation or correlation. As we mentioned in the beginning of our lesson, it’s used for hey mind your business. Get your nose out of my business.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 너랑 무슨 상관이야?
Keith: Okay what kind of relation is it to you literally but we have a couple more easier examples.
Hyunwoo: 상관이 있다
Keith: To have relations, to have correlation.
Hyunwoo: 상관이 없다
Keith: To not have relations, to not have correlation 그래서 예를 들으면 if I am dating Hyunwoo’s sister
Hyunwoo: 상관 없어.
Keith: 상관 없어? No relation, no correlation, you don’t care.
Hyunwoo: Umm…
Keith: So this word actually translates better to matter, what matter is it? To have relation, to have correlation 있다 없다 if I am dating your sister 상관 없어요?
Hyunwoo: 상관 없어요.
Keith: It’s okay, it’s not a problem, I don’t care. It has nothing to do with me but if you did care, 그럼 어떻게 말해요?
Hyunwoo: 상관 있어.
Keith: There is correlation that it has something to do with me.
Hyunwoo: 나랑 상관 있어.
Keith: And how did it come out in today’s conversation?
Hyunwoo: 무슨 상관이야?
Keith: And this is little more difficult grammatical construction but it means what does it matter to you.
Hyunwoo: 네, 상관이 없다랑 똑같은 뜻이죠.
Keith: Okay let’s move on to our next word.
Hyunwoo: 자기
Keith: Oneself. Now this is general term for oneself. Does it mean me, you, him. When you are talking about somebody me, you, him and then they do something or they want something in terms of their own self 예문 좀 들어 보세요.
Hyunwoo: 자기 집
Keith: One’s own home.
Hyunwoo: 그래서 선생님이 학생한테 숙제는 자기 집에서 해라고 하죠.
Keith: And they say that when they are doing homework in school.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그렇죠.
Keith: So please do homework in your own home.
Hyunwoo: 네. 숙제를 너희 집에서 해 하면 who? 누구? 이렇게 되잖아요. 그래서 자기 집에서 해 그러면 he is talking about everybody.
Keith: Okay next we have
Hyunwoo: 자기 이름
Keith: One’s own name.
Hyunwoo: 어떻게 자기 이름도 몰라요?
Keith: How do you not know your own name?
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Keith: Okay and once again, this is a general pronoun to refer to oneself. It can also be used as a possessive pronoun 근데 원래는. What is it supposed to be?
Hyunwoo: 자기의
Keith: But that 의 drops as it does in a lot of cases. So it can be used as just a pronoun or a possessive pronoun.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 한국 드라마를 보면 여자들이 남자에게 ‘자기야’라고 부르는 경우를 볼 수 있죠.
Keith: Darling.
Hyunwoo: Darling 자기야 하면
Keith: Honey.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Do your parents say that?
Hyunwoo: No, no, never. 절대로. 현우 엄마, 현우 아빠.
Keith: Yeah I know that. I know that too. Nobody in my family says it but it’s a little romantic.
Hyunwoo: 네. 젊은 여자들이 남자 친구를 ‘자기야’라고 많이 부르죠.
Keith: Hmm 그리고 결혼하고 한 몇 년동안 자기야라고 부르고
Hyunwoo: 아기가 생기면 누구누구 아빠 애아빠.
Keith: Yeah it just changes after you get a child. Okay next word we have is
Hyunwoo: 밥값
Keith: Money for food. Now this word can be broken down into two different things. First we have
Hyunwoo: 밥
Keith: Meal or food.
Hyunwoo: 값
Keith: Price, food price but this is in regards to the actual money. So whenever you are going to a restaurant, 계산하고 and you see the price, that’s 밥값 that’s the money.
Hyunwoo: 술을 마시러 가면, 술값.
Keith: Same thing, money for alcohol.
Hyunwoo: 새로운 집에 이사를 가면 집값.
Keith: Money for house.
Hyunwoo: 네. 밥값, 술값, 집값.
Keith: Okay. Next we have
Hyunwoo: 이상형
Keith: Ideal type. 현우씨의 이상형이 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: 어...예쁘고 똑똑하고 착하고 음...많아요.
Keith: That’s so general. Yeah of course, she has to be pretty. Of course she has to be smart.
Hyunwoo: 네, 저랑 성격이 비슷한 사람.
Keith: Okay, okay. So actually we wanted to go over this word because we wanted to go over the 한자 in this word. The first part we have is
Hyunwoo: 이상
Keith: Ideal.
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에 형
Keith: Type. Now this 형 also means type, shape, mold, form and you can imagine ideal type. That type is that 형. So what are some other examples where 형 appears?
Hyunwoo: 형태
Keith: Shape and that 형 in front means shape.
Hyunwoo: 삼각형
Keith: Triangle. Now that last 형 means shape. So we are talking about a triangle, the shape of a triangle.
Hyunwoo: 사각형
Keith: Rectangle. And we have that 형 at the end once again, shape and some other examples.
Hyunwoo: 모형
Keith: A model as in
Hyunwoo: Not Ms. Korea. 모형 비행기.
Keith: Model airplane.
Hyunwoo: 네, 중학교 때 모형 비행기 많이 만들었어요.
Keith: I made a lot of model airplanes when I was in junior high school.
Hyunwoo: 네, 저 진짜로 많이 만들었어요.
Keith: 진짜로요?
Hyunwoo: 네. 한 20m 날아가다가 떨어졌어요 항상.
Keith: Okay and once again we have the 형 at the end and that means type, shape, mold, form generally speaking. And if you are interested, remember to check out the PDF. We have hanja for all the hanja words in our vocabulary. Okay our next phrase is
Hyunwoo: 한 턱 쏘다
Keith: It’s on me. 이것 좀 slang 아니에요?
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그런데 정말 많이 써요. 한 턱 쏘다, 한 턱 내다.
Keith: If you remember, 내다 means to pay but also 쏘다 means to pay.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: 그거 원래 뜻은 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: 쏘다? 쏘다는 shoot이라는 뜻이에요.
Keith: So I am going to shoot.
Hyunwoo: A jaw. 영어로는 말이 안 되죠.
Keith: 턱 means jaw or chin but I am going to shoot the chin.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it doesn’t make any sense.
Keith: Well may be like if you are going out with a lot of friends, the bill is expensive. It’s like might as well die. Maybe.
Hyunwoo: 한 턱 쏘다
Keith: And you can also just use 쏘다 as well as 내다 to pay.
Hyunwoo: 밥값을 쏘다
Keith: I will pay for the food.
Hyunwoo: 술값을 쏘다
Keith: I will pay for the alcohol.
Hyunwoo: 맥주는 내가 쏠게.
Keith: I will pay for the beer. Okay so let’s move on to our grammar point.

Lesson focus

Keith: Today we are talking about the plain declarative.
Hyunwoo: Plain declarative는 뭐예요?
Keith: Well we are going to explain that right now. So the plain declarative is used when you are kind of talking to yourself, kind of thinking out loud. You are not necessarily saying it to somebody and when you are thinking to yourself, you can say it directed towards someone but not necessarily you can just be thinking out loud but when you are saying it to somebody, this is very, very intimate. It can be considered intimate politeness level. And the construction of this is a little different for descriptive verbs, aka adjectives and active verbs. So for descriptive verbs, it’s the same thing as dictionary form. So let’s have a couple of examples. To be salty…
Hyunwoo: 짜다
Keith: And this is dictionary form but if you are eating something and this thought comes to mind, oh it’s salty and you just spit out the food in your mouth and you also spit out the words that are in your head, out in your mouth, what do you say?
Hyunwoo: 짜다
Keith: Yeah. It’s the same thing as the dictionary form and once again, it’s not necessarily directed towards someone but if we are eating together and I say 아, 형 이거 좀 짜다 and I am just saying it, he can respond if he wants and he doesn’t have to respond either.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 그런데 대부분 대답하겠죠?
Keith: Oh 짜다.
Hyunwoo: 어, 짜다.
Keith: And for active verbs, aka action verbs, the conjugation is a little different. So we take the verb stem. Let’s go with the verb 쏘다 to pay. So we have the verb stem.
Hyunwoo: 쏘
Keith: And then because it ends in ㅗ, a vowel we just add ㄴ.
Hyunwoo: 쏜
Keith: And then
Hyunwoo: 쏜다
Keith: The plain declarative. So let’s have a couple of examples.
Hyunwoo: 맥주는 내가 쏜다.
Keith: I will be paying for the beer and I don’t necessarily have to respond but I can say 고맙다.
Hyunwoo: 고맙다.
Keith: To be thankful in the plain declarative. Can we have some other examples?
Hyunwoo: 어, 전화 온다.
Keith: The phone is ringing.
Hyunwoo: 어, 비 온다.
Keith: It’s raining.
Hyunwoo: 어, 경찰 온다.
Keith: The police are coming. Okay, so let’s have another example of where the verb stem 받침이 있을 때 when it ends in a consonant.
Hyunwoo: 아이스크림이 녹는다.
Keith: The ice cream is melting. What’s the verb we have?
Hyunwoo: 녹다
Keith: To melt and the verb stem is
Hyunwoo: 녹
Keith: And 그때는 받침이 있으니까 it has a consonant at the end, we add 는다
Hyunwoo: 녹는다
Keith: And the sentence
Hyunwoo: 아이스크림이 녹는다.
Keith: The ice cream is melting, plain declarative. Okay, so in today’s conversation, 어떻게 나왔어요?
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째, 돈도 많다.
Keith You have a lot of money.
Hyunwoo: 두 번째, 행운을 빈다.
Keith: Wish you good luck. 마지막에는.
Hyunwoo: 고맙다.

Outro

Keith: Thanks. Once again, these are kind of thinking out loud but you can respond to these if you want as well. And remember this is in the intimate politeness level and you should only be using this with people you feel very, very comfortable with. Okay, so that’s going to do it for today, so see you later.
Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요.
