Seol: 오늘 대화는 무슨 내용이에요?
Hyunwoo: 오늘은 대화가 아니에요.
Seol: 대화가 아니에요?
Hyunwoo: 네. Keith, 자동 응답이 영어로 뭐죠?
Keith: Answering machine.
Hyunwoo: 지혜가 소연이 핸드폰에 전화를 했는데 전화가 꺼져 있었어요. 그래서 음성 메세지를 남기는 내용이랍니다.
Keith: And that’s a voice mail. 음성 메세지.
Seol: 어, 그렇구나.
Keith: Do you too leave voice mails often?
Seol: 음...아니요. 옛날에 삐삐 쓸 때는 자주 남겼었는데 지금은 핸드폰으로 해서 전화 안 받으면 문자 보내요.
Keith: What’s that first word you meant
Seol: 삐삐
Keith: Beeper I love this word. I love this.
Hyunwoo: 그런데 삐삐는 소리가 삐삐삐 난다고 해서 삐삐죠?

Keith: But beepers kind of died out around 몇 년이였죠?
Seol: 한 98년? 99년? 왜냐면

Seol: 아니에요. 왜냐면 내가 99년에 고등학교 3학년이었는데요, 그 때부터 친구들이 핸드폰을 가지고 다니기 시작했어요.

Seol: 그래서 2000년에 대학에 들어갔더니 모두가 핸드폰을 쓰고 있더라고요. 그래서 저도 당장 핸드폰을 샀죠.
Hyunwoo: Ah Keith, 핸드폰 제일 처음에 산 게 언제예요?
Keith: 산 게 아니고 누나한테 받았어요.
Hyunwoo: 아…
Keith: So maybe when I was a senior in high school and I was the first one to have one.
Seol: Whoa!
Hyunwoo: In your class?
Keith: Yeah I guess so. The coolest kid on the block.
Seol: Whoa!
Hyunwoo: What year was that?
Keith: 그건 아마 2000, 2000년? 아마?
Hyunwoo: 음...비슷하구나. 한국이랑 미국도.
Keith: 네, 비슷해요. But the phones in Korea are much better.

Keith: But yeah I am the same way. I don’t leave any voice mails either. I just – if the voicemail picks up, I just hang up and send the text message. What’s the text message again?

Hyunwoo: 자, Keith, 이제 한국어로 voice mailbox가 무엇인지 아시겠어요?
Keith: Huh it’s 음성 사서함. It’s a difficult word hah!
Seol: 어려운 말이에요.
Keith: Well actually to be honest, I didn’t even know this. I just thought it was 음성 메세지.
Hyunwoo: 사서함은 평소에는 쓰이지 않는 말이죠. 그냥 영어로는 post box같은 것이죠.
Seol: 네
Keith: So what’s the difference between 음성 사서함 and 음성 메세지?
Hyunwoo: 음성 사서함에 음성 메세지를 남기죠.
Keith: So 음성 사서함 is the voice mailbox, 음성 메세지 voice message.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그렇죠. 설씨는 이런 경험 한 적 있으세요? 친구가 이렇게 전화를 안 받으면 어떻게 하세요?
Seol: 끊어요.
Hyunwoo: 연락하고 싶은데 끊어요?
Seol: 제가 전화하면 그 기록이 남잖아요. 전화번호랑 이름이 남잖아요. 그러면 아마 친구가 급한 일 있어서 전화를 못 받을테니까 나중에 저한테 다시 전화를 해 줄 거라고 생각하고 끊어요.
Hyunwoo: 전화가 안 오면?
Seol: 그럼 뭐 서운하겠죠? 근데요 Keith, 한국에서는 별표, 우물 정자라고 하는데 이거 영어로는 뭐라고 해요?
Keith: Well what’s our first word then?
Seol: 별표
Keith: Star

Hyunwoo: 여기 지혜처럼 저도 예전에 안내방송에서 분명히 별표를 누르세요라고 했는데 우물 정자를 눌러서 지금까지 녹음한 내용이 다 사라지는 경우가 많이 있었어요.
Seol: 지금은 근데 사람들이 음성 메세지 많이 남기지도 않고 또 아무거나 눌러도 되는 경우도 많아졌어요.
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠. 그런데 삐삐 쓸 때에는 특히나 별표는 취소 우물 정자는 저장 그랬기 때문에 한 3분 동안 얘기해 놓고 다 사라지는 경우가 너무 많았어요.
Seol: 왠지 현우씨 되게 옛날 사람 같지 않아요?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: So why don’t we take a look at some of these vocabulary words in a little more detail. First one we have is
Seol: 꺼지다
Keith: To be off. And this comes from the verb
Seol: 끄다
Keith: Which is a transitive active verb which means to turn off, it needs an object. But here we have the intransitive infix 지. So it turns into.
Seol: 꺼지다
Keith: To be off. Here you don’t need an object. So the phone is turned off.
Seol: 핸드폰이 꺼지다
Keith: To turn off the phone.
Seol: 핸드폰을 끄다
Keith: If you notice there, we have the object marking particle because we need that object for the transitive verb 끄다 but here 꺼지다 is an intransitive verb. So it’s to be turned off. Okay our next word we have.
Seol: 통화료
Keith: And this can be broken down a little bit. What’s the first part?
Seol: 통화
Keith: To talk on the phone and now the last part we have is.
Seol: 료
Keith: Now this means to pay a bill or a fee. What are some other examples of 료 added on at the end?
Hyunwoo: 수업료
Keith: Tuition fee.
Hyunwoo: 입장료
Keith: Entrance fee.
Hyunwoo: 수업료, 입장료와 같은 무슨무슨료 대신에 일반적인 fair, fee, charge를 말할 때는 요금이라고 합니다.
Keith: Generally speaking, when you are just talking about fares or fees, it’s 요금 but when you are attaching it to something like 통화 or 입장, some noun and then you have 료 at the end, that’s something, something fee. So that 료 has a 한자 character to it. Doesn’t it?
Seol: 네
Keith: So don’t forget to check out our PDF. There we have 한자 vocabulary and it will have that hanja vocabulary and it will have that hanja for you but once again, we are going to give you a couple of examples of where you can find 료 in usage. And our next word is
Seol: 폰
Keith: And this is cell phone but 다른 것도 있죠?
Seol: 핸드폰
Keith: And 이거는 원래 영어말이에요 아니에요?
Seol: 핸드폰 영어 아니에요? 전 영어인 줄 알았는데. Hand 영어 손이잖아요?
Keith: Hand
Seol: Phone.
Keith: Phone yeah but no it doesn’t make sense in English. It’s Konglish.
Seol: 아, 나 지금까지 영어인 줄 알았어요.
Keith: And what else do we have?
Hyunwoo: 휴대폰
Keith: Yeah same thing.
Hyunwoo: 휴대, 휴대는 portable이라는 뜻이에요. 그래서 휴대폰이라고 많이 하죠. 지금은 뭐라고 그러죠 주로?
Seol: 핸드폰
Hyunwoo: 핸드폰. 그냥 폰이라고도 하고요.
Keith: 핸드폰, 폰, 휴대폰. They all work, it’s all the same thing as cell phone. So let’s talk about phones a little bit. These days, Korean cell phones are all about fads right? So what’s the fad now?
Seol: 요새는 프라다 폰 같은 거
Keith: Prada?
Seol: 프라다 폰 들어본 적 없어요?
Keith: They have Prada phones?
Seol: Yeah LG에서.
Keith: LG Really?
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Are they like Prada prices?
Seol: 정말 비싸요.
Hyunwoo: 프라다처럼 비싸진 않지만 정말 비싸요 비싸고 버튼 대신에 터치 스크린.
Keith: Oh kind of like an iPhone.
Seol: 아이폰보다 더 예뻐요.
Keith: Ah.
Hyunwoo: 정말 예뻐요.
Keith: Well is it made out of leather?
Seol: No but they made it with Prada.
Keith: Okay, okay well is it the slide still? When I was in Korea, it was the slide that was the fad.
Hyunwoo: 프라다 폰은 슬라이드도 아니고 플립도 아니고 그냥
Seol: 바라고 해야 되나?
Hyunwoo: It’s a bar type?
Keith: It’s just a bar oh because it is touch screen, that’s what. Okay all right, so all right enough about phones. Let’s move on to our next word.
Seol: 연결
Keith: Connection and to make this a verb, what can we do?
Seol: 연결하다
Keith: To connect.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 연결되다라고도 하죠.
Keith: To be connected.
Hyunwoo: 네. 하다 되다.
Keith: So can we have a couple of sample sentences of 연결하다 and 연결되다?
Hyunwoo: 아까는 우리가 핸드폰을 끄다, 핸드폰이 꺼지다의 예를 살펴봤죠. 그런데 연결하다와 연결되다는 케이블을 연결하다, 케이블이 연결되다처럼 말할 수 있어요.
Keith: So can we have that first example?
Hyunwoo: 케이블을 연결하다.
Keith: I connected to cable.
Hyunwoo: 케이블이 연결되다.
Keith: The cable is connected and I am not sure who did it. Not necessarily I did it but it is connected.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: And this can be the same thing 하다, 되다 can also work with our next word.
Seol: 취소
Keith: Cancel. Now 취소하다랑 취소되다 그 차이가 뭐예요?
Seol: 나는 Keith와의 점심 약속을 취소하다.
Keith: Why?
Seol: Because I don’t want to have lunch with you.
Keith: 너무 한다.
Seol: 그리고 Keith와의 점심 약속이 취소되다.
Keith: So the first one is
Seol: 취소하다
Keith: You canceled it.
Seol: 맞아요.
Keith: And 취소되다 is it’s become canceled and you know, maybe oh the rain or maybe Seol told me a lie and something but somehow, someway it’s been canceled. 취소하다 is the actual action of canceling. And that’s the same thing, 연결하다 the actual action of connecting. All right let’s move on to our last word.
Seol: 연락
Keith: Contact and this verb is used quite frequently actually in Korean. Back in high school, a lot of girls would write emails like oh KIT, Keep in touch but Koreans, they say it not just in high school, they say it all the time. 연락해 Keep in touch.
Seol: 예를 들어서, 현우씨, 아직도 Keith랑 연락해요?
Hyunwoo: 아니요. 요즘엔 연락 안 해요.
Seol: 이렇게 쓰이는 거예요.
Keith: Yeah what’s up with this double team? This is not cool. Okay so 연락하다 to contact someone but it has a dual meaning of keeping in touch or to get in contact with somebody. So if I am searching for Seol, she has run away from me and she has run away from KoreanClass101.com, Hyunwoo asks.
Hyunwoo: 설한테 연락했어?
Keith: Did you contact Seol? No 못 했어.
Hyunwoo: 연락 못 했어?
Keith: Yeah.
Seol: 미안해요. 내가 요새 좀 연락이 안 돼요.
Keith: All right. Well let’s move on to our grammar point. The first one we have today is
Hyunwoo: 려고 하다
Keith: Be going to do, be about to do, be planning to do.
Hyunwoo: 설씨, 본문에서는 뭐라고 나왔죠?
Seol: 생일 파티를 하려고 하는데라고 했어요.
Keith: I am planning on having a birthday party and any mood tense negation is expressed in the last 하다 and this is I am planning on having a party. Now this shows intention of the future, what you want to do or what you are about to do. So let’s have a couple of examples. I am going to eat 김치찌개.
Hyunwoo: 김치찌개를 먹으려고 해요.
Keith: I am about to eat 김치찌개. I am planning on buying a phone.
Seol: 핸드폰을 사려고 해요.
Keith: I am planning on going to the zoo.
Hyunwoo: 동물원에 가려고 해요.
Keith: I am planning on sleeping after this.
Seol: 이거 끝나고 자려고 해요.
Keith: So here, let’s go over the construction really quickly. You take the verb stem and add 려고 하다. The mood and the tense are expressed in the last 하다, 려고 하다. 근데 만약에 받침이 있으면if it ends in a consonant in the verb stem, then you add 으려고, 으려고 하다. So let’s have an example of 려고 하다 and 으려고 하다.
Hyunwoo: 네. 자다에는 받침이 없죠? 그래서 자려고 그런데 먹다에는 ㄱ이라는 받침이 머 밑에 있죠? 그래서 먹다는 먹려고 하면 발음이 어렵죠? 그래서 먹으려고라고 합니다.
Keith: So since 먹다 to eat has that 받침 at the end 먹으려고.
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 요새는 사람들이 이 말을 좀 귀엽게 하더라고요?
Hyunwoo: 어떻게요?
Seol: 제가 해 볼까요?
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 잠을 자려고 해요 이거를 귀엽게 음... 나 잠을 자려고 해, 나 잠 자려고 해, 나 자려고, 나 자려구. 귀엽나요?
Keith: Well it’s – is it to be cute or is it just because it is shorter?
Seol: 짧기도 하고 귀엽기도 하고.
Keith: Because 나도 이렇게 말하는데 like 자려구, 잘려구.
Hyunwoo: Keith가 말할 때는 짧기 때문에.
Keith: Yeah I say it because it is short.
Hyunwoo: 예. 설씨가 말할 때에는 귀엽게.
Seol: 귀엽게 보이려고?
Keith: So yeah if you want to shorten it up a little bit, you have the options. All right, let’s move on to our next grammar point.
Hyunwoo: 은지
Keith: Whether, or.
Hyunwoo: 이 whether or는 A or B 가 아니라 A verb or B verb의 의미로 쓰일 때 은지를 많이 써요.
Seol: 예를 들어서요?
Hyunwoo: 예를 들어서 있다, 없다란 동사 아시죠?
Seol: 네
Hyunwoo: 있는지 없는지
Seol: 아 그러면 밥을 먹다 먹지 않다는 밥을 먹는지 안 먹는지 이렇게 말하는 거예요?
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 어...
Hyunwoo: Keith, 윤설씨한테 우리 밥 사 줄 돈이 있는지 없는지 물어 봐.
Keith: 있는지 없는지 모르겠는데요.
Hyunwoo: 그러니까 물어 봐. 보통은 있는지 없는지라고 하면 너무 길잖아요. 그래서 없는지를 빼고 있는지만 말해도 괜찮아요.
Keith: So you have to assume what the opposite verb is. Usually you are using two opposite verbs of each other 먹는지 안 먹는지, 있는지 없는지, 가는지 안 가는지. So in today’s conversation, how did it come out?
Seol: 지혜가 이렇게 물어요. 올 수 있는지 없는지 이 메세지 들으면 연락 줘.
Keith: So if you can come or if you can’t come, let me know but you can also shorten it a bit by just saying one verb.
Seol: 올 수 있는지 연락 줘.
Keith: If you can come, give me a call. The traditional grammatical structure is 올 수 있는지 없는지. You need two verbs but in colloquial speech or even a lot of times in writing as well, you just shorten it and just use one verb and you assume the other opposite verb.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 동사를 있는지 없는지, 가는지 안 가는지처럼 말하는 것 말고도 이것이 A인지 B인지라는 형태로도 많이 쓰여요. 예를 들어서 이것이 스페인어인지 프랑스어인지 모르겠어요.
Keith: So in that case, we are not using two opposite verbs but we are using the same verb 이다 to be.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 빨간색인지 노란색인지.
Seol: 학생인지 회사원인지.
Hyunwoo: 네, 이렇게 쓰면 A or B라는 뜻을 나타낼 수 있습니다.
