Becky: Hello and welcome to Culture Class: Korean Superstitions and Beliefs Lesson 3 Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway and Rainy Day Weddings. I'm Becky and I'm joined by Jaehwi.

Jaehwi: 안녕하세요. (annyeonghaseyo) Hi, I'm Jaehwi.

THE TWO SUPERSTITIONS

Becky: In this lesson we will talk about two common superstitions in South Korea. The first superstition is about bad luck. What's the superstition called in Korean?

Jaehwi: 덕수궁 돌담길, (deoksugung doldamgil).

Becky: Which literally means "Deoksugung stonewall walkway." Jaehwi, can you repeat the Korean phrase again?

Jaehwi: [slow] 덕수궁 돌담길 [normal] 덕수궁 돌담길

Becky: In Korea, it's believed that couples who walk down this stonewall walkway will break up soon.

Jaehwi: It's because there used to be a divorce court nearby.

Becky: Now the building houses the Seoul Museum of Art.

Jaehwi: But the superstition remains. Actually, I walked by the Deoksugung stonewall walkway 10 years ago for a date.

Becky: And then, what happened?

Jaehwi: We broke up just a few weeks later.

Becky: So this walkway is not a good place to go for a first date?

Jaehwi: Probably not.

Becky: The second superstition is about good luck. What's the superstition called in Korean?

Jaehwi: 비 오는 날 결혼식, (bi oneun nal gyeolhonsik).

Becky: Which literally means "Wedding on a rainy day." Let’s hear it in Korean again.

Jaehwi: [slow] 비 오는 날 결혼식 [normal] 비 오는 날 결혼식

Becky: In Korea, it’s believed that a rainy wedding day means the couple will stay happily married.

Jaehwi: Rain is essential for plants to grow. So people associate a rainy day with growing happiness.

Becky: This is a very sweet superstition.

Jaehwi: Let’s say someone has spent months and months planning their wedding. Then on the day, it starts to rain.

Becky: You can tell them it’s good luck to make them feel better.

Outro

Becky: There you have it - two Korean superstitions! Are they similar to any of your country’s superstitions? Let us know in the comments!

Jaehwi: 안녕히 계세요. (annyeonghi gyeseyo)
