Minji: You're going to be a singer? Haha. That's absurd.
Minsu: Absurd? Why?
Minji: You can't sing!
Minsu: It's okay. I dance well.
Minji: What? You're going to become a singer because you dance well? Whew...I'm worried.
Minsu: You're worried? Don't worry. I'm surely going to become famous!
Minji: Yeah...I hope so.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: 미선씨 when you were little, did you ever want to become a singer?
Miseon: Well I had never thought of it actually. You know, I never thought of it, you know I could become a singer but actually I really wanted to be like a kindergarten teacher.
Hyunwoo: I see.
Miseon: I don’t know why but I love babies.
Hyunwoo: Was it kind of influenced by your kindergarten teacher. Did you like your kindergarten teachers?
Miseon: No, I never went to kindergarten.
Hyunwoo: I see well maybe that’s why.
Miseon: Right, right but whenever I see toddlers and babies, I love them.
Hyunwoo: I see.
Miseon: I really love them and I really want to play with them. You know, that’s my another character like yeah.
Hyunwoo: I am sure you’d make a very good kindergarten teacher.
Miseon: I am sure too.
Hyunwoo: Well for me becoming a kindergarten teacher or a singer was not even in the list of choices I never even imagined myself.
Miseon: Really?
Hyunwoo: Yeah becoming a kindergarten teacher or any sort of a teacher in a school and I think it’s the same for a lot of people in Korea.
Miseon: Yeah but now-a-days, it’s easier to get proper education and training to become a singer right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah you know for me, singing was not something that I thought I could learn. I heard that it’s easier to get some vocal training right?
Miseon: Uh-huh…
Hyunwoo: Do you think there are many places in Korea that you can go to to get some vocal training?
Miseon: Yes as far as I know, there are lots of places in Seoul now where you can go and get singing lessons.
Hyunwoo: I see. I never even thought about the possibility but maybe I should check out some of them someday. I really want to be able to sing better or can you teach me?
Miseon: Wait 현우씨, you are a dancer. I was told that you are a dancer and you want to become a singer as well?
Hyunwoo: Well I was never able to sing.
Miseon: Okay.
Hyunwoo: So you know, what’s wrong with you know wanting to sing better.
Miseon: Right, right, right.
Hyunwoo: Can you teach me?
Miseon: Sure. Okay follow me.
Hyunwoo: Okay.
Miseon: 아하하하하아 [singing]
Hyunwoo: Well maybe not today.
Miseon: What about that?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Okay let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words. So the first word we are going to look at is
Miseon: 춤
Hyunwoo: Dance
Miseon: 춤 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 춤 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: So this word is a noun and it means dance. Then how do you say the same thing in a verb like to dance?
Miseon: It’s very simple. It’s 추다 but usually they are used together 춤 and 추다 are usually used together.
Hyunwoo: I think it’s interesting because you know 춤 is a noun form of 추다 and 추다 is a verb form of 춤. So no one really knows which one was made first.
Miseon: That’s true. It’s like a chicken or egg, which was there first.
Hyunwoo: Right and I think the word for dream is a similar case.
Miseon: 예. It’s 꿈.
Hyunwoo: 꿈. It’s the same with this word too like 꿈 is the noun dream and 꾸다 is the verb to dream.
Miseon: Interesting right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Miseon: 춤을 추다, 꿈을 꾸다. They are always used as a pair.
Hyunwoo: Interesting, right?
Miseon: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: Okay what’s the next word?
Miseon: 걱정되다
Hyunwoo: To be worried, to worry.
Miseon: 걱정되다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 걱정되다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Now this word 걱정되다 is similar to 걱정하다 if you already know the meaning of 걱정하다, you might be wondering you know, what’s the difference and Miseon has the answer.
Miseon: Yes I do. 걱정되다 is literally worrying is done. So even if you don’t want to worry about something but you are still worried, you can use this word.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so 걱정하다 is like actively worrying. You want to, I mean no one wants to worry but you are the one who does the worrying, does the act of worrying but if you say 걱정되다 it means you are worried even if you don’t intend to do so.
Miseon: Exactly. So I say 걱정되다 much more often than 걱정하다.
Hyunwoo: Because obviously no one wants to worry about something but when you say to someone don’t worry, you use 걱정하다 right?
Miseon: Yeah it’s like 걱정하지 마.
Hyunwoo: 걱정하지 마. 걱정하지 마세요, 여러분.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: All right, great job. Let’s go to the grammar point of this lesson.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What is the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to show disbelief or surprise as a reaction to someone’s statement.
Hyunwoo: As in the example?
Miseon: Okay. 니가 가수를 한다고?
Hyunwoo: You are going to become a singer.
Miseon: When someone tells you something surprising, something that you did not previously know or something that you cannot believe, you can show reaction by using this sentence ending
Hyunwoo: ㄴ/는다고요?
Miseon: Or
Hyunwoo: 았다고요? or 었다고요? or 였다고요?
Miseon: This sentence ending is basically a way to coach the other person.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so it has the nuance of saying, did you say or so what you said was.
Miseon: You can add 요 at the end if you want to be polite.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and when it is a reaction to something that the other person did not say directly but you heard from someone else
Miseon: ㄴ/는다고요?
Hyunwoo: Or
Miseon: 았다고요? or 었다고요? or 였다고요?
Hyunwoo: Can be translated as I have heard that something, something. Is that true? So let’s look at how to form a sentence with a structure.
Miseon: Okay 가다 is to go and you add ㄴ다고요 to the verb stem 가. So it becomes 간다고? or 간다고요?
Hyunwoo: And it means you are going.
Miseon: And for the past tense, you add 았다고요? or 었다고요? or 였다고요?
Hyunwoo: So 갔다 plus 았/었/였다고요? becomes
Miseon: 갔다고? or 갔다고요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah and it means, you went there. Okay let’s look at how this structure was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Miseon: Yes 가수가 된다고?
Hyunwoo: You are going to become a singer.
Miseon: 그래서 진짜로 지원했다고?
Hyunwoo: So you really applied?
Miseon: 니가 가수를 한다고?
Hyunwoo: You are going to become a singer?
Miseon: 말도 안 된다고?
Hyunwoo: Absurd?
Miseon: 춤 잘 추니까 가수를 한다고?
Hyunwoo: You are going to become a singer because you dance well?
Miseon: 걱정된다고?
Hyunwoo: You are worried. Okay great job. Before we go, let’s look at some more sample sentences. How do you say in a surprised voice, in a shocked voice, you ate alone?
Miseon: 혼자서 밥 먹었다고?
Hyunwoo: You bought all these books?
Miseon: 이 책들을 다 샀다고?
Hyunwoo: And a scary one, you saw me yesterday?
Miseon: 어제 나를 봤다고?
Hyunwoo: I mean it doesn’t have to be a scary one if you didn’t do anything bad.
Miseon: Right.
