Jisu: Put it on the desk over there.
Minsu: How about this monitor and this computer?
Jisu: Put it down here on the table.
Minsu: Is this all?
Jisu: No. There is some more stuff on the second floor as well.
Minsu: There is some more stuff on the second floor too?
Jisu: Yeah. The moving company put some stuff on the second floor by mistake.
Minsu: Let's take a break!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well I love traveling around but I hate moving houses.
Gyeongeun: Same here. 저도 이사 싫어요.
Hyunwoo: Oh you do? So what do you hate about moving the most?
Gyeongeun: I hate having to move and reorganize all my stuff.
Hyunwoo: Oh I know what you mean. For me, I don’t even have much stuff to move. For me, it’s actually very easy to move because I don’t have much stuff in my room but I hate looking for a new place to live in.
Gyeongeun: Oh 저는 반대예요. I am the opposite. I love looking for new place to live in but I hate moving stuff.
Hyunwoo: Ah that’s where the moving companies 이삿짐 센터 come in. They are really good and convenient.
Gyeongeun: 비싸지 않아요? Aren’t they expensive?
Hyunwoo: Well they are but you don’t have to move anything yourself and they will put things the way you want them.
Gyeongeun: Well I will give it a try next time I move. 다음 번에 이사할 때 써 볼게요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah okay and if you do, let me know what you think about them.
Gyeongeun: Okay.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: Yeah. Now let’s go on to the vocabulary section.
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: The first word we are looking at is
Gyeongeun: 놓다
Hyunwoo: To place, to put down.
Gyeongeun: 놓다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 놓다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 2층
Hyunwoo: Second floor
Gyeongeun: 2층 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 2층 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐 센터
Hyunwoo: Moving company, moving agency.
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐 센터 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 이삿짐 센터 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 실수로
Hyunwoo: By mistake, by accident.
Gyeongeun: 실수로 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 실수로 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Gyeongeun: 가져다 놓다
Hyunwoo: To bring something over, to bring something over and put it down.
Gyeongeun: 가져다 놓다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 가져다 놓다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 잠깐만
Hyunwoo: For a second, just for a while.
Gyeongeun: 잠깐만 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 잠깐만 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 마지막으로
Gyeongeun: 쉬다
Hyunwoo: To take a rest, to take a break.
Gyeongeun: 쉬다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 쉬다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: All right. Now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are looking at is
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐 센터
Hyunwoo: Moving company, moving agency.
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐 센터 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 이삿짐 센터 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 이삿짐 센터. I like this word for some reason I don’t know and this word can be broken down into three parts.
Gyeongeun: 네.
Hyunwoo: Let’s break them down.
Gyeongeun: First 이사
Hyunwoo: To move, moving.
Gyeongeun: And 짐
Hyunwoo: Luggage. So 이사 and 짐 are put together and become
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐
Hyunwoo: 이삿짐. And lastly at the end, we have this coined word from English 센터.
Gyeongeun: 네. 그래서 이삿짐 센터예요.
Hyunwoo: 이삿짐 센터. Moving agency. Okay 그 다음 단어는요?
Gyeongeun: 가져다 놓다
Hyunwoo: To bring something over, to bring something and put it down.
Gyeongeun: 가져다 놓다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 가져다 놓다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Now this word is also composed of two parts.
Gyeongeun: 가지다 and 놓다
Hyunwoo: But as you know, 가지다 just means to have or to possess. So by combining the two meanings of 가지다 and 놓다, to have and to put it down, it does not really form the meaning of to bring something over.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. But it’s easier if you think about the expression 가지고 오다.
Hyunwoo: Ah to bring something.
Gyeongeun: 네. 가지고 오다 is also literally to have and to come. So it means to bring something.
Hyunwoo: Oh so 가져다 놓다 has a similar meaning as 가지고 오다 and it becomes to bring something over and 놓다 to put it down.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. For example, 현우씨, 빌려간 제 책 가져다 놓으세요. Please bring back the book you borrowed from me and put it back where it was.
Hyunwoo: 네. Okay great example but it’s not going to happen. Now let’s look at grammar.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: So what is the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeongeun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to use the particles 에, 에다 and 에다가 when talking about places.
Hyunwoo: As in the example
Gyeongeun: 어디에다가 놓을까요?
Hyunwoo: Where shall I put this down?
Gyeongeun: Basically, basically the most common way to indicate a direction or a place is using the particle 에.
Hyunwoo: But in everyday real life conversations, not only A but also 에다 and 에다가 are used when talking about putting an item at a certain place or placing something at or on something else.
Gyeongeun: Yeah the particle 에 is just as colloquial as 에다가 or 에다 but 에다가 and 에다 sound more specifically related to places.
Hyunwoo: And why is that?
Gyeongeun: Because the particle 에 can be used in various other types of context too.
Hyunwoo: Yeah that’s right. 에 can be used for time, date and many other contexts too. So let’s look at how it can be used in a sentence.
Gyeongeun: 네. For example, here is 여기. So if you want to say, at here or put something at this place, you can say 여기에.
Hyunwoo: And 여기에 can be changed to 여기에다 or 여기에다가 again to be more specific. All right. Now let’s look at how this was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요. 이 책들 어디에 놓을까?
Hyunwoo: Where do you want me to put these books?
Gyeongeun: 여기에다 놔.
Hyunwoo: Put them here.
Gyeongeun: 그건 저기 책상 위에다가 놔.
Hyunwoo: Put it on the desk over there.
Gyeongeun: 그건 여기 테이블 위에 놔.
Hyunwoo: Put it down here on the table.
Gyeongeun: 이삿짐 센터에서 실수로 2층에다가 짐을 가져다 놓았어.
Hyunwoo: The moving company put some stuff on the second floor by mistake. All right, now before we go, let’s look at three more sample sentences okay?
Gyeongeun: 네, 그럴까요?
Hyunwoo: 네. So I will say the English, please give me the Korean.
Gyeongeun: 네.
Hyunwoo: So how would you say where should I ride?
Gyeongeun: 어디에다 써야 해요?
Hyunwoo: Okay and how would you say, I will take it to my room?
Gyeongeun: 제 방에 가져다 놓을게요.
Hyunwoo: Great and lastly, how would you say to someone, you shouldn’t write on the wall?
Gyeongeun: 벽에다가 글씨 쓰면 안 돼요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Great. Thank you and this is it for today.
