| 봉진: 알아요. 그래도 자꾸 마시게 되네요. |
| 수희: 조금 줄이세요. 몸에 안 좋아요. |
| 봉진: 네. 그런데 수희 씨는 왜 또 밖에 나왔어요? |
| 수희: 저요? 그냥 사무실에 있으면 너무 졸려요. 그래서 자꾸 나오게 되네요. |
| 봉진: 커피 마실래요? |
| 수희: 아, 아니에요. 저는 괜찮아요. 그럼 먼저 들어갈게요. |

| Gyeongeun: Same as 봉진 here. I drink coffee too often 커피를 자꾸 마시게 돼요. |
| Hyunwoo: So you get to keep drinking coffee even though you don’t want to drink so often. Well for me, I am okay with coffee but for me, instead of taking the bus, I always end up just taking the subway 버스를 타는 대신에 항상 지하철을 타게 돼요. |
| Gyeongeun: Why is that? |
| Hyunwoo: There are buses that take me to the places that I want to go more quickly 제가 가고싶은 곳에 더 빨리 데려다 주는 버스들도 있는데 I just don’t like to wait for the bus without knowing when it’s coming. 언제 올지 모르면서 버스를 기다리는게 정말 싫어요. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Hyunwoo: All right. Now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are going to look at is |
| Gyeongeun: 줄이다 |
| Hyunwoo: To reduce, to cut down on. |
| Gyeongeun: 줄이다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 줄이다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: Now this word 줄이다 is a transitive verb. So it means to reduce something. |
| Gyeongeun: 바지 길이를 줄이다, 담배를 줄이다. |
| Hyunwoo: To reduce the size of the pants and to cut down on smoking. |
| Gyeongeun: 네. But if you want to use it in the intransitive sense like something reduces or decreases, you use 줄다. |
| Hyunwoo: Right 줄이다 and 줄다. So please pay attention to the difference between these two words. Now what is the next word we are looking at? |
| Gyeongeun: 졸리다 |
| Hyunwoo: To feel sleepy. |
| Gyeongeun: 졸리다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 졸리다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: 졸리다 is to feel sleepy but not to actually doze off or to fall asleep right? |
| Gyeongeun: No it is just to feel sleepy. |
| Hyunwoo: Then how do you say to doze off or to fall asleep for a little while. |
| Gyeongeun: 졸다 |
| Hyunwoo: 졸다. So it is the same kind of difference as between 줄다 and 줄이다. Again 줄다 is |
| Gyeongeun: To decrease, to be reduced |
| Hyunwoo: And 줄이다 is |
| Gyeongeun: To reduce something. |
| Hyunwoo: And 졸다 is |
| Gyeongeun: To fall asleep, to doze off. |
| Hyunwoo: And 졸리다 |
| Gyeongeun: Means to feel sleepy. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay great. 경은씨, 졸지 마세요. |
| Gyeongeun: 안 졸아요. |
| Hyunwoo: 졸지 마시고. Now let’s move on to the grammar point. |

| Hyunwoo: You can express it using the structure 게 되다. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah originally 게 되다 has the meaning of to become plus adjective right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah but in this case, it can mean to do something without intending to do it in the first place or all in all, to end up doing something as a result. You can use this structure when you are talking about a decision that was made by other people and that influences the subject of the sentence. Okay I think it will be best if you looked at how to use it actually. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. 예를 들어서 to work is 일하다. So you take the verb stem 일하 and add 게 되다 and it becomes 일하게 되다. |
| Hyunwoo: 일하게 되다. It has been decided that one will work or to end up working. |
| Gyeongeun: And another example 예를 하나 더 들어서 to know is 알다. So take the verb stem 알 and add 게 되다 and it becomes 알게 되다. |
| Hyunwoo: 알게 되다. To get to know or to find out about something without intending to do so. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: All right. Now let’s look at how you would use it in the dialogue for this lesson. |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요. 그래도 자꾸 마시게 되네요. |
| Hyunwoo: But I can’t help but keep drinking it. |
| Gyeongeun: 그래서 자꾸 나오게 되네요. |
| Hyunwoo: So I keep coming outside. Great, how about a few more sample sentences? How do you say, I don’t want to watch it but I keep watching it. |
| Gyeongeun: 안 보고 싶은데 자꾸 보게 돼요. |
| Hyunwoo: How about I don’t want to go but I can’t help but keep going. |
