| Hyunwoo: So 경은씨 have you been to a cave before yourself? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah I think almost everybody in Korea gets to go to at least one cave during their high school field trips, don’t you think? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah actually yes. That’s why I was asking. Caves are not something that I always expected to see with my own eyes in Korea as I was growing up as a child but then in high school, it was so common to have visiting a big famous cave included in the list of destinations on our 수학여행 field trips. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah sometimes the field trip itinerary can be planned with the visit to a cave as the main part as well. |
| Hyunwoo: Did you like it 어땠어요? |
| Gyeongeun: Well I did because I usually never get to see such things. I think I like adventures. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay I liked it a lot actually too. You know whenever we were visiting a cave, I dreamed of having an encounter with some mysterious creatures but that never happened. |
| Gyeongeun: You watch too many 공상과학 영화 Sci-Fi movies. 공상과학 영화를 너무 많이 본 거 아니에요? |
| Hyunwoo: What was that again? |
| Gyeongeun: 공상과학 영화 |
| Hyunwoo: Sci-Fi movies. Yeah maybe but don’t you think caves give you some ideas like that? But any way, how about we look at the vocabulary now? |

| Hyunwoo: Okay. Now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first phrase we are looking at is |
| Gyeongeun: 길을 잃다 |
| Hyunwoo: To get lost. |
| Gyeongeun: 길을 잃다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 길을 잃다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: Now let’s break this down. What does 길 mean? |
| Gyeongeun: 길 means a way, a route, a road. |
| Hyunwoo: And 잃다? |
| Gyeongeun: 잃다 means to lose, to misplace. |
| Hyunwoo: So together 길을 잃다 literally means to lose one’s way or to be not able to find one’s way. So it means to get lost. |
| Gyeongeun: Which is what you always do. |
| Hyunwoo: That was totally unnecessary to mention. |
| Gyeongeun: But it’s a truth 현우씨는 항상 길을 잃어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Well everybody I does that sometimes. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah 가끔씩 sometimes but for you, it’s 항상. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay I admit it but I do still remember that we have one more word to look at. |
| Gyeongeun: Okay it’s 어둡다. |
| Hyunwoo: To be dark. |
| Gyeongeun: 어둡다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 어둡다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: So 어둡다 means dark. So it’s very simple but if you say in Korean literally that someone’s face color is dark. |
| Gyeongeun: Oh you mean 얼굴색이 어둡다? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah so if I say this to you 경은씨 like 경은씨, 얼굴색이 어두워요. What does it mean? |
| Gyeongeun: It means that I look sad, gloomy and not very cheerful. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah so if someone says 얼굴색이 어두워요 to you, it doesn’t mean that you look tan or your face is dark. |
| Gyeongeun: No. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah it means you look gloomy, sad, what’s up, okay? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah right. |
| Hyunwoo: Then what is the opposite word of 어둡다. |
| Gyeongeun: The opposite word of 어둡다 is 밝다. |
| Hyunwoo: 밝다. So how do you say a dark room? |
| Gyeongeun: 어두운 방 |
| Hyunwoo: How about a bright room? |
| Gyeongeun: 밝은 방 |
| Hyunwoo: And a bright cheerful look on my face is? |
| Gyeongeun: Well the expression itself is 밝은 표정 but I don’t think your face is |
| Hyunwoo: Okay, okay that’s enough. It’s time to move on to the grammar section. |

| Gyeongeun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say it is easy to do something and difficult to do something in Korean. |
| Hyunwoo: As in the example? |
| Gyeongeun: 길을 잃기 쉬워요. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s easy to get lost. |
| Gyeongeun: So when you want to say that something is easy to do or difficult to do in Korean, you can use the structure 기 쉽다 or 기 어렵다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. The part 기 is actually a verb ending that changes a verb into a noun. So 기 plus 가 쉽다 is like literally saying verb ing is easy and the same goes for 기 어렵다 too. |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah but over the course of time, 가 or 는 was dropped and now it’s very common to just say 기 쉽다 and 기 어렵다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah instead of saying 기가 쉽다 or 기가 어렵다, right? |
| Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So how do you form a sentence with this? |
| Gyeongeun: Verb stem plus 기 plus 쉽다. |
| Hyunwoo: And that means to be easy to verb. |
| Gyeongeun: For example, 읽다 is to read. So 읽기 쉽다. |
| Hyunwoo: Is to be easy to read. |
| Gyeongeun: And if you say verb stem plus 기 plus 어렵다. |
| Hyunwoo: It means to be difficult to do something. |
| Gyeongeun: For example 읽기 어렵다 |
| Hyunwoo: Means to be difficult to read. Okay now let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson. |
| Gyeongeun: Okay 길을 잃기 쉬워요. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s easy to get lost. |
| Gyeongeun: 길을 잃으면 나오기 어려워요. |
| Hyunwoo: If you get lost, it’s difficult to get out of here. |
| Gyeongeun: 길 찾기 쉬워요. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s easy to find a way. |
| Gyeongeun: 너무 어두워서 따라가기 어려워요. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s too dark. So it’s difficult to follow you. |

| Hyunwoo: And how do you say this novel is short. So it’s easy to read. |
| Gyeongeun: 이 소설은 짧아서 읽기 쉬워요. 근데 정말 제 이름은 기억하기 어려워요? |
| Hyunwoo: Your name? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: Is your name difficult to remember? |
| Gyeongeun: Yeah everyone says so. |
| Hyunwoo: I don’t think so. Well let’s ask our listeners. Everybody is 경은’s name which is 경은 difficult to remember? |
