hyeona: appa, appa mwo hae?
appa: eung? sinmun boneun jung.
hyeona: appa. na-rang nolja. uri norigong-won gaja.
appa: appa sinmun boneun jung-iya. eomma-rang nora.

appa: geurae? geureom oppa-rang nora. eung?
hyeona: oppa? oppa-do bappa. oppa gongbuhaneun jung-iya.
appa: appa-do sinmun boneung jung-iya. hyeona-do sinmun bollae?
hyeona: sireo. na-do appa-rang an nora.
appa: arasseo. arasseo. appa-rang nolja. hyeona-ya... mwo hago nolkka? eung?
hyeona: eum... jamkkanman. saenggakhaneun jung-iya.
Hyeona: Dad, what are you doing?
Father: Huh? I'm reading the newspaper.
Hyeona: Dad, let's play. Let's go to the amusement park.
Father: I'm reading the newspaper. Play with your mother.
Hyeona: Mom is busy. She's talking on the phone.
Father: Is she? Then play with your brother, will you?
Hyeona: My brother? He's busy, too. He's in the middle of studying.
Father: I'm in the middle of reading the newspaper, too. Do you want to read the newspaper, too?
Hyeona: No! I don't want to play with you either!
Father: All right. All right. Let me play with you. Hyeona, so what shall we do?
Hyeona: Hmm...wait a second. I'm thinking.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well this sounds like a late Sunday morning to me.
Miseon: Yeah it does.
Hyunwoo: The father is reading a newspaper, the mother is on the phone talking to someone and the brother is studying in his room and the young daughter is bored and has nothing to do.
Miseon: Plus 아빠 doesn’t want to play with 딸. That’s sad right?
Hyunwoo: That is.
Miseon: I can see all the Korean families you know like a typical picture.
Hyunwoo: Yeah do you think there are a lot of fathers – Korean fathers who want to go to amusement parks with their daughters on a Sunday?
Miseon: You know a lot of young couples who have kids, I see a lot of young couples actually in the amusement park enjoying their Sunday afternoon.
Hyunwoo: Aaha!
Miseon: Yeah so I think it’s a good thing but my mother and father generation, they never, ever. I never have any kind of memorization of going some amusement park with my family.
Hyunwoo: Well that’s something very different from the younger generation I think because I mean either I don’t remember many times of going to amusement parks with my parents but they did take me to amusement parks a few times. So I still have some memories but I think parents these days especially in Korea, they have to do a lot of sacrifice.
Miseon: Right. That’s true.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: Yeah and for now, let’s find out what’s keeping everybody in this dialogue busy by looking at the vocab for this lesson.
Miseon: Okay.
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째 단어는
Miseon: 신문
Hyunwoo: Newspaper.
Miseon: 신문 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 신문 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음 단어는
Miseon: 보다
Hyunwoo: To see, to watch, to read.
Miseon: 보다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 보다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Miseon: 놀다
Hyunwoo: To hang out, to play.
Miseon: 놀다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 놀다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Miseon: 놀이공원
Hyunwoo: Amusement park.
Miseon: 놀이공원 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 놀이공원 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Miseon: 통화하다
Hyunwoo: To talk on the phone.
Miseon: 통화하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 통화하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Miseon: 잠깐만
Hyunwoo: Just a moment.
Miseon: 잠깐만 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 잠깐만 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 마지막 단어는
Miseon: 생각하다
Hyunwoo: To think.
Miseon: 생각하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 생각하다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: All right. Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 처음 단어는
Miseon: 놀다
Hyunwoo: To hang out, to play.
Miseon: 놀다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 놀다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 놀다 means to play but it can also mean other things.
Miseon: 네. When you say 놀자, it means let’s play or let’s go out and hang out.
Hyunwoo: Right but when you say 놀지마 to someone
Miseon: It means work. Don’t sit around doing nothing.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and if you say 노는 날 when you refer to a day, it doesn’t mean a day when you have fun
Miseon: But it means a holiday.
Hyunwoo: A holiday 노는 날
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: And some people work on Saturdays too and they take every other Saturday off and those Saturdays are called 노는 토요일.
Miseon: 노는 토요일.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. So that means a holiday and we have another word for 노는 날 which is
Miseon: 휴일
Hyunwoo: Yeah 휴일. 노는 날 is a native Korean word and 휴일 is
Miseon: Sino-Korean.
Hyunwoo: Yeah exactly great. Now what’s the next word we are looking at?
Miseon: Next word we see is 통화하다.
Hyunwoo: To talk on the phone, to make a phone call.
Miseon: 통화하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 통화하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Do you spend a lot of time on the phone every day?
Miseon: No, no, no.
Hyunwoo: No.
Miseon: Except when I have a conversation with you.
Hyunwoo: Oh it’s an honor.
Miseon: Yes.
Hyunwoo: Well if you translate the phrase to talk on the phone literally into Korean, what does it become?
Miseon: Okay, it becomes 전화로 이야기하다.
Hyunwoo: And that’s a bit too long right?
Miseon: 네. But well, it’s not wrong.
Hyunwoo: It’s not wrong, of course not but what do most people say?
Miseon: Most people say 통화하다.
Hyunwoo: So when I say to you let’s talk on the phone later, I will call you later, what do I say?
Miseon: 조금 있다 통화해.
Hyunwoo: Yeah we use the verb 통화하다 instead of 조금 있다 전화로 이야기하자. while that’s not wrong again but we say 통화하다.
Miseon: 네, 맞습니다.
Hyunwoo: And one other thing. A lot of our listeners asked us in the comments, what does this phrase mean that you hear when you call someone and the line is busy. What does the announcement say?
Miseon: Okay. I am going to imitate the voiceovers. Okay ready?
Hyunwoo: Yeah.
Miseon: 지금 거신 전화는 통화 중입니다. It sounds similar?
Hyunwoo: It sounds exactly the same.
Miseon: Okay.
Hyunwoo: Wasn’t it you on the phone?
Miseon: 감사합니다.
Hyunwoo: So as you can see, you can also hear the word 통화 in that sentence.
Miseon: 네.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: All right let’s go to the grammar point of this lesson.
Miseon: Okay.
Hyunwoo: So what is the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say that you are in the middle of doing something.
Hyunwoo: As in the example
Miseon: 지금 공부하는 중이에요.
Hyunwoo: I am in the middle of studying.
Miseon: When you want to say that you are in the middle of doing something, you can use the structure 는 중이다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. Another structure that you can use to say that you are doing something is 고 있다 but 는 중이다 gives off a stronger nuance that you are in the middle of doing something and why is that?
Miseon: Because the word 중 means center or middle.
Hyunwoo: Right. So how do you make a sentence with this?
Miseon: Very, very, very simple. You just add 는 중이다 at the end of a verb stem.
Hyunwoo: Right so for example, what does 하다 become?
Miseon: 하다 is to do and the verb stem is 하 So you add 는 중이다 at the end and it becomes 하는 중이다.
Hyunwoo: To be in the middle of doing something.
Miseon: 예, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: All right. So how was this structure used in the dialogue for this lesson?
Miseon: 신문 보는 중.
Hyunwoo: I am reading the newspaper and now this is interesting because the father didn’t even say the last part and said 신문 보는 중 instead of 신문 보는 중이야.
Miseon: 예. This is very, very casual.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so be sure to use this kind of sentence ending only with people that you are very, very close with.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. And this structure was also used in 엄마 통화하는 중이야.
Hyunwoo: Mom is talking on the phone.
Miseon: 오빠 공부하는 중이야.
Hyunwoo: My older brother is in the middle of studying.
Miseon: 아빠도 신문 보는 중이야.
Hyunwoo: Daddy is in the middle of reading the newspaper too.
Miseon: 생각하는 중이야.
Hyunwoo: I am thinking. Great job 미선씨.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: I have a favor to ask of you.
Miseon: 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: Let’s look at some sample sentences before we finish.
Miseon: Oh sure. 물론이에요.
Hyunwoo: 네. How do you say, I am in the middle of watching a movie?
Miseon: 지금 영화 보는 중이에요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I am in the middle of eating with my family?
Miseon: 지금 가족들이랑 밥 먹는 중이에요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say I was in the middle of taking a nap?
Miseon: 낮잠 자는 중이였어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay and…
Miseon: 왜 깨워요, 현우씨?
Hyunwoo: Why did I wake you up? Because you need to record lessons.
Hyunwoo: Everyone. She is like this. No, you are always working hard.
Miseon: 아니에요.
Hyunwoo: 아니에요?
Miseon: 아니에요. 다음이요.
Hyunwoo: 다음. So how do you say, what were you doing? This is a common question that people ask each other.
Miseon: Right you should remember so
Hyunwoo: Yeah so again what were you doing?
Miseon: 뭐 하는 중이였어요?
Hyunwoo: Remember that past tense ending and it’s 이였어요. So again what is it?
Miseon: 뭐 하는 중이였어요?
Hyunwoo: 뭐 하는 중이였어요?
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: So that just about does it for today.
Miseon: Ready to test what you just learned?
Hyunwoo: Make this lesson’s vocabulary stick by using lesson specific flash cards in the learning center.
Miseon: There is a reason everyone uses flash cards.
Hyunwoo: Which is they work.
Miseon: 네. They really do help memorization.
Hyunwoo: And you can get those flash cards for this lesson at
Miseon: KoreanClass101.com
Hyunwoo: Okay before we go, 미선씨.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: 우리 뭐 하는 중이였어요?
Miseon: 우리 녹음하는 중이였어요.
Hyunwoo: And 지금도 녹음하는 중이에요.
Miseon: 네. 그리고 저는 잠 자는 중이였어요.
Hyunwoo: Do you mean before recording or while you are recording?
Miseon: While we are recording.
Hyunwoo: That’s amazing. You can do both things sleeping and recording at the same time. That’s amazing.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Okay.
Miseon: That’s my 장점.
Hyunwoo: That’s your strength.
Miseon: Right.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Awesome. So we will see you at KoreanClass101.com. If you have any questions just stop by and ask and Mi Sun will be there to answer.

Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요.
Miseon: 안녕히 계세요, 여러분. 감사합니다.

This is a bit random but i don't comment anymore because I don't know if anyone reads (these comments may be from years ago , who knows). I think it may be good to have a notification system for comments, its always been on my mind because I don't know where I have left comments and I want to check.

Hi Aidin,

Thank you for posting. As you are 'filming' a movie, you would say:

영화를 촬영하는 중이에요. (촬영=film)

Native Koreans also say 영화를 찍는 중이에요. (찍다=take an image, but it is also used when one is making a movie).

Cheers,

Lyn
