Mingyeong: On the bus.
Keith: And who's the conversation between.
Mingyeong: A woman on the bus and a man who's being accused of touching her.
Keith: Well, these speakers, even though they're mad, they're still polite, so they're going to be using formal Korean.
Mingyeong: 존댓말 (jondaenmal)
Keith: Ok, let's take a listen and see these people in action.
Mingyeong: 들어 봅시다! (Deureo bopsida!)

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Alright. Well there's no touching going on in this studio, but there is some vocabulary. So what's the first word we're going to take a look at?
Mingyeong: 만지다
Keith: To touch. So, for example, how do you say 'to touch one's hair'?
Mingyeong: 머리카락을 만지다
Keith: To touch one's ears?
Mingyeong: 귀를 만지다
Keith: Right, but there, at the same time, sometimes means 'to handle'.
Mingyeong: Yeah, for example, when I ask you 혹시 컴퓨터 만질 줄 아세요?
Keith: "Do you know how to operate a computer?" but it's usually referring to fixing it or repair it. And I think the reason why you use 만지다 there is because, "I don't know how to do it. I don't want to touch it. Can you touch it? Can you operate it?"
Mingyeong: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: Ok. Well, what's our next word?
Mingyeong: 거짓말
Keith: A lie. And we can actually break this word down.
Mingyeong: 거짓
Keith: That means false or untrue.
Mingyeong: 말
Keith: That's word or language. So together, it's false language. Basically, a lie. How do you say, to lie?
Mingyeong: 거짓말하다 And the people who lie, 거짓말쟁이.
Keith: Someone who lies often.
Mingyeong: 네.
Keith: When you're accusing someone of lying. When you're saying, "You liar!" you don't actually say, "You are a liar." What do you say?
Mingyeong: 거짓말
Keith: You just say "Lie!" in Korean.
Mingyeong: 네.
Keith: And you're saying, "Hey, stop lying. You're a liar."
Mingyeong: 거짓말하지 마.
Keith: Ok. What's our next word?
Mingyeong: 경찰서
Keith: Police station. And we can break this one down, too.
Mingyeong: 경찰
Keith: Police.
Mingyeong: 서
Keith: A station or an office. So what's another word that has this '서' at the end?
Mingyeong: 부서, as in a company.
Keith: And that's referring to a section or a department.
Mingyeong: 소방서
Keith: Fire station. There we go. We've got that station at the end, too.
Mingyeong: 네.
Keith: Ok. Well, let's take a look at the grammar for this lesson.

Lesson focus

Keith: What's our grammar point?
Mingyeong: -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다
Keith: This is a way to express a past experience or the fact that you have or have not done something before.
Mingyeong: 적 here has the meaning of "time" or "experience" and whether you have that past experience or not is expressed through 있다 (itda) and 없다 (eopda), which mean "to have" and "to not have."
Keith: Right. So, to have that 적, to have that experience. Or to not have that experience.
Keith: Ok. Let's look at how it's constructed.
Mingyeong: You just add this structure after the verb stem and that's it.
Keith: Pretty simple. How about the verb 보다, "to see"?
Mingyeong: The verb stem is 보 so you add ㄴ 적이 있다 or 없다 so it becomes 본 적이 있다 or 본 적이 없다.
Keith: To have seen it before or to have not seen it before, and this literally means "to have or not have the former experience of seeing it". Kind of complicated, but translated it's pretty simple. It's "I've seen a movie."
Mingyeong: 영화 본 적이 있다.
Keith: I've never seen that movie.
Mingyeong: 이 영화 본 적이 없어.
Keith: Ok. Well, how about in this dialogue?
Mingyeong: In this dialogue, the guy said, 저는 이 여자를 만진 적이 없어요.
Keith: Can we break that down? What's the verb that we have?
Mingyeong: 만지다
Keith: And we take the verb stem...
Mingyeong: 만지
Keith: And we add on the construction...
Mingyeong: 만진 적이 없다.
Keith: "I've never touched her." Well, where else did it come out in this conversation?
Mingyeong: The guy also said, 저는 그런 적 없어요!
Keith: "I've never done that!" Well, the woman was accusing him of?
Mingyeong: 본 적이 있어요!
Keith: "I've seen you before!" And the accusations keep on coming along! Well, Mingyeong, have you ever told a lie to your parents? 부모님한테 거짓말 한 적이 있어요?
Mingyeong: It would be a lie if I say, 거짓말 한 적 없어요. (geojitmal han jeok eopseoyo)
Keith: It's ok. Everyone does it.
Mingyeong: 오빠는 롯데월드에 간 적이 있어요?
Keith: Surprisingly, 간 적이 없어요. I've never gone to Lotte World.
Mingyeong: Really?
Keith: Mm.
Mingyeong: God, you're missing out a lot. It's like the best place.
Keith: So highly recommended for our listeners.
Mingyeong: 네.

Outro

Keith: Well, that's going to do it for this lesson.
Mingyeong: 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
Keith: See you later.
