Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here! It's All Right. Okay, so we’re back in the studio with lovely, lovely Iseul and as always my beautiful co-host, Seol.
Seol: Wow.
Iseul: Wow.
Keith: It’s all right.
Seol: Yeah, I’m waiting for the result for my test and then I hope it’s all right.
Keith: Hey, this is the lesson for you because hey, it’s all right.
Seol: I really want to hear the script of today. I’m so excited about what they’re saying.
Keith: And just like Seol, if you got some problems, if you got something hanging over your heads, some burdens, just listen to this lesson because hey, it’s all right.
Seol: 괜찮아.
Keith: Oh, okay. Well, we’re going to get into that in the lesson. So Iseul, can you explain what’s going on over here?
Iseul: Nayeong is getting her art checked by the teacher and she’s being a little criticized but in the end hey, it’s all right.
Keith: Okay, and what kind of politeness level will we be using?
Iseul: Standard politeness level.
Keith: And a little bit of intimate too. Okay, so without further a-do, let’s jump into it.

Lesson conversation

나영 선생님, 지금 바빠요?
선생님 아니오. 안 바빠요.
나영 이거는 제 그림이에요. 괜찮아요?
선생님 음... 안 좋아요. 이거는 커요. 이거는 작아요. 이거는 나빠요.
(선생님 지나간 후)
원이 (작은 목소리로) 아니야... 괜찮아. 괜찮아.
Seol: 한 번 더 천천히.
나영 선생님, 지금 바빠요?
선생님 아니오. 안 바빠요.
나영 이거 제 그림이에요. 괜찮아요?
선생님 음... 안 좋아요. 이거는 커요. 이거는 작아요. 이거는 나빠요.

Keith: Excuse me teacher, are you busy right now?
선생님 아니오. 안 바빠요.
Keith: No, I'm not busy.
나영 이거 제 그림이에요. 괜찮아요?
Keith: This is my drawing. Is it okay?
선생님 음... 안 좋아요. 이거는 커요. 이거는 작아요. 이거는 나빠요.
Keith: Hmm... It's not good. It’s big here. It’s small here. It’s bad here.
(선생님 지나간 후)
(After the teacher leaves)
원이 (작은 목소리로) 아니야... 괜찮아. 괜찮아.
Keith: (In a whisper) No... It's okay. It's okay.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Alright Seol, what did you think of the conversation.
Seol: Poor Nayeong. I feel sorry for Nayeong.
Iseul: Yeah, I could relate. I was never good at art myself.
Keith: My family is actually, well, my mom is an artist and my sister, she does art as well, but I don’t have any art genes and my family is just like, super art and I’m zero art and I’m sad.
Iseul: It’s all right, Keith. It’s all right.
Seol: 괜찮아.
Keith: Okay. Well, I got two lovely co-hosts with me, so I’m thinking it’s all right.

Keith: And this is…
Seol: Adjective.
Keith: Yeah, adjectives but the thing with adjectives in Korean is they can be conjugated, just like verbs can be. If you know the conjugation of the verbs such as, 가다 to go, what are some of the conjugations that we went over so far?
Seol: 갑니다.
Keith: And this is the formal politeness level. And now we have…
Seol: 가요.
Keith: The standard politeness level. And these adjectives are pretty much conjugated in the same way. So, you guys already know these are the conjugations for all of these adjectives. These adjective are actually called descriptive verbs. The reason for this is because they can be conjugated just like verbs, but they’re being descriptive. So, that’s why when we gave the definitions we said, “to be busy,” “to be good,” “to be okay,” because these are conjugated as verbs. So you can use this just like verbs. Just think of it as “to be” and then an adjective whatever it means, so “to be busy,” “to be good,” “to be bad.” Let’s take a look at our last vocabulary word.

Keith: Now.
Seol: 바빠요?
Keith: Busy. Here the dictionary form of the descriptive verb “to be busy” is…
Seol: 바쁘다.
Keith: But here it changes to…
Seol: 바빠요.
Keith: Okay, this is in the standard politeness level, if you haven’t guessed it ends in 요, so it’s standard politeness level, but there’s a slight change in the middle. It was 바쁘- and then it changes to 바빠-. Usually in the last vowel of the verb stem, if it’s anything but “ㅗ” or “ㅏ,” you change the conjugation to “ㅓ” But here it’s influenced by the first syllable 바 and because of that vowel “ㅏ,” we conjugate that second syllable into the same thing, 바빠요. And once again, remember the raising intonation it’s a question. Okay, next we have…

Keith: Okay, once again it’s no followed by 안 which means "not" 바빠요 busy, so “not busy.” And here we can infer that he’s talking about himself, “I’m not busy.” Okay, next we have…

Keith: This followed by…

Keith: The topic marking particle and here the topic marking particle is used to set it up. So, generally speaking, this is what the conversation is going towards. Here, the conversation can sway any ways, so we’re using 이거,는, the topic marking particle to focus the conversation over to this. Okay, next we have…
Iseul: 제
Keith: My. And once again, this is broken down into…
Iseul: 저의 [저에]
Keith: I followed by the possessive particle, but when you put them together it turns into?
Iseul: 제
Keith: And now we have, “picture is.” Okay, next is a very, very important descriptive verb that we got.
Iseul: 괜찮아요?
Keith: “It’s okay” or “It’s all right.” Can you give us the dictionary form of this?
Iseul: 괜찮다.
Keith: And this is conjugated as…
Iseul: 괜찮아..
Keith: ..요
Iseul: Yeah, 괜찮아요.
Keith: Okay, 요 is politeness particle, the standard politeness particle. We’ll get into a little more detail later, but just be patient with us. Okay, so here we have 괜찮아요?, that raising intonation it’s a question, “Is it okay?” “Is my picture okay?” So, can we get a few sample sentences with 괜찮아요?
Iseul: 제 옷 괜찮아요?
Keith: 아니요. I’m joking, I’m joking.
Iseul: All right.
Keith: Relax. Okay, 제 my, followed by 옷 clothes, 괜찮아요? okay. 괜찮아요. 괜찮아요.
Iseul: Is my clothes okay?
Keith: It’s all rght.
Iseul: It’s all right.
Seol: 제 머리 괜찮아요?
Keith: Okay, let’s break that down.
Iseul: 제
Keith: My followed by…
Iseul: 머리
Keith: Hair.
Iseul: 괜찮아요?
Keith: Okay. Yeah, your hair is fine. It’s all right.
Iseul: Thank you.
Keith: Okay, so here 괜찮아요? if you see someone lying on the floor and it’s 2:00 o’clock in the morning and he’s by himself, what would you say?
Iseul: 괜찮아요?
Keith: Okay, “Are you okay?” Yeah, so this is a very, very useful word that you’ll be using all the time. And just like in English, “It’s okay” or “It’s all right” It’s used pretty much in the same context. Okay, let’s move on real quick.
Iseul: 음.. 안 조ㅎ아요.
Keith: Not good. And this guy’s…
Seol: He’s to the point.
Keith: Yeah, he’s kind of direct and he…
Seol: I do not like him.
Keith: Well, don’t you think a lot of Korean teachers are direct?
Seol: No, even though my art was really bad, my art teacher always said, 괜찮아. Not like this.
Keith: Well, this teacher is really direct and very blunt. And he says 안 좋아요. “not good.”
Seol: Oh, I hate him.
Keith: Okay, let’s move on.
Seol: 이거는 커요.
Keith: This followed by the topic marking particle 커요 big and once again the dictionary form of this, of the verb to be big is 크다. but here it’s conjugated into 커요. So, remember to pick up that PDF and get those conjugation charts. Okay, next we have…

Keith: This small. And now…
Seol: 이거는 나빠요.
Keith: This bad.
Seol: He’s bad.
Keith: 선생님이 나빠요?
Seol: 네. 선생님이 나빠요.
Keith: You really, you seem really disturbed by this teacher.
Seol: I hate him. You know he’s a teacher, he’s discouraging a student.
Keith: He’s to the point.
Seol: I do not like him.
Keith: Alright well, this lesson, It’s All right.
Iseul: It is. Nayeong has a great friend who encourages her.
Keith: Yeah, and she says…
Iseul: 아니야, 괜찮아. 괜찮아.
Keith: So here, the translation is, “No it’s not. It’s okay, it’s okay.” Once again we got 괜찮아, 괜찮아. “It’s all right, it’s all right.” But let’s go over 아니야. a little bit. Here because this is her friend, they’re using the intimate politeness level. So the standard politeness level what we had so far is 바빠요.
Iseul: 괜찮아요.
Seol: 공부해요.
Iseul: 좋아요.
Keith: And these, if you noticed the standard politeness level, almost always ends in 요. Generally speaking, if you want to use the intimate politeness level…
Iseul: Drop the 요.
Keith: Okay, so for a lot of things in the standard politeness level, you can just drop the 요 and you got the intimate politeness level. We’re just touching upon this today, we’re going to get into a little more detail in a few more lessons, but we just wanted to introduce it to you today.
