INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here! Who is This? Seol, it’s great to have you back.
Seol: Hello.
Keith: It’s been a long time.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: You’ve been away, you’ve been studying, you’ve been busy, you couldn’t record with us.
Seol: Yeah, I was really busy. I’ve been really busy.
Keith: Yeah but, it’s so good to see you again.
Seol: You too.
Keith: 오랜만이에요.
Seol: 네.
Keith: Seol, it’s been a long time, but you’ve still been keeping up with the scripts, right?
Seol: Right.
Keith: So will you be able to explain to us what’s going on?
Seol: These two people are friends and they speak in standard politeness level.
Keith: Up until now the beginner series has been almost all in the formal politeness level. We introduced it briefly in the few other prior lessons while we went back to the formal politeness level. But from now on, we’re going to go into the standard politeness level, which is much more commonly heard and used. So they’re speaking in the standard politeness level. So they’re watching TV and up comes a person that Minyeong doesn’t know. Let’s find out who that is.

Lesson conversation

정민 이 사람이 조지 부시예요.
Keith: This person is George Bush.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Seol, what did you think of the conversation.
Seol: He is so funny. He doesn’t know who George Bush is.
Keith: Hey, there some people out there in the world that doesn’t know George Bush.
Seol: Really?
Keith: You know, well yeah. I mean, I’m sure a lot places that don’t have TV, news, and…
Seol: Yeah, but here, you know, Minyeong and Jeongmin they are all Korean, they watch TV every day, and every day TV news we can see his face.
Keith: Maybe Minyeong is just watching music videos the whole time or…
Seol: Yeah, that’s why Minyeong does not know who he is, right?
Keith: Yeah, hopefully our listeners study a bit more than Minyeong and to help everyone study, we’re going to go into the vocab. How does that sound?
Seol: Great.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: Alright, can you start us off?
Seol: 사람 [natural native speed]
Keith: This.
Seol: 사람 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have.
Seol: 누구 [natural native speed]
Keith: Who.
Seol: 누구 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 누구 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have.
Seol: 누구 [natural native speed]
Keith: This person.
Seol: 누구 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 누구 [natural native speed]
Keith: Seol, I got a great idea.
Seol: About what?
Keith: Let’s jump into this conversation and take a deeper look.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: Well, we do it all the time anyway but it’s still a great idea, isn’t it?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Alright Seol, let’s take a look at the first line. Okay Seol, can you help us out?
Seol: 이 사람이 누구에요?
Keith: Okay, first we have…
Seol: 이 [natural native speed]
Keith: This. Now, some of you remember this was…
Seol: 이거

Lesson focus

Keith: In one of our previous lessons and that this, but 이 is this too. And let us explain a little bit. We have 이거 which is this, 그거 that, and 저거 that over there. Now, if we take a look at the first syllable of each of those words, we have 이, 그, and 저. Now if we add a noun to the end of those syllables, we have this noun or that noun or that noun over there, very simple. Seol, let’s take the noun 사람 which means person. So Seol, what is “this person?”
Seol: 이 사람.
Keith: And next you got to be on your toes for this one. What’s the next one we have?
Seol: 그 사람.
Keith: And you might be thinking, “that person” and that’s kind of true, but here, this is a little tricky, so be on your toes. If two people are talking, if they both refer to somebody outside of the conversation, that person that they’re referring to should not be in view. So right now, if you wanted to talk about Peter from JapanesePod, we can say 그 사람 because he’s not here. If we wanted to talk about my sister we can say, 그 사람 but I wouldn’t say, 그 사람 “that person” it’s a little rude, I guess. Well not rude, just not as intimate as it can be. Anyway, so whenever you use 그 사람 or 그 noun, that noun has to be out of view, alright. And lastly we have…
Seol: 저 사람.
Keith: That person and that person is someone in view, and that’s not necessarily somebody you know, it’s just that person. It has to be a little farther away from you. It’s just like that person. Alright, so we have three things, this person is…
Seol: 이 사람
Keith: That person in view.
Seol: 저 사람
Keith: And that person not in view.
Seol: 그 사람
Keith: Okay, please be careful not to confuse 그 사람 and 저 사람. Remember one is in view 저 사람 and one is not in view 그 사람. Alright so, let’s move on. 이 사람이 누구에요? the first word we have is…
Seol: 이
Keith: The subject marking particle. Next is…
Seol: 누구
Keith: Who followed by…
Seol: 에요?
Keith: The copula in the standard politeness level. Alright so, literally we have “this person who is,” and as you can guess, “Who is this person?” Now let’s go over the standard politeness level. As we actually didn’t go into it in too much detail, let’s recap a little bit. Alright, 에요 is the standard politeness level of the copula 이다. Now here, it’s in the question form, 누구에요? and you should definitely pay attention to the rising intonation, 누구에요? In the standard politeness level, intonation means a lot. There can be the same pronunciation of a word, but it can be a question or a statement depending on the intonation. Here, it’s a question because of the rising intonation. Alright, let’s move on. Next we have…
Seol: 민영씨는 이 사람을 몰라요?
Keith: First is…
Seol: 민영
Keith: Minyeong’s name.
Seol: 씨
Keith: The honorific suffix followed by…
Seol: 는
Keith: The topic marking particle, and now we have…
Seol: 이 사람
Keith: This person, followed by…
Seol: 을
Keith: Object marking particle. Now this object marking particle has not come out in a while. So, just to remind you this particle, I’m sorry to state the obvious, marks the object of the sentence. Alright so, the object to the sentence is this person. And lastly we have…
Seol: 몰라요?
Keith: Don’t know, this is once again in the standard politeness form and has a rising intonation which makes it a question. So literally it’s, “Minyeong, this person don’t know?” we translate this as, “Minyeong, you don’t know this person?” and it’s this person that Minyeong doesn’t know because it’s marked by the object marker 을. Alright, next we have…
Seol: 네. 몰라요. 누구에요?
Keith: Okay, this should be fairly easy. Let’s break it down real quick.
Seol: 네.
Keith: Yes followed by…
Seol: 몰라요.
Keith: Don’t know. But here 저는 몰라요. 저는 can easily be dropped because we can infer that Minyeong is talking about herself. So I, and actually there should also be a 이 사람을 몰라요, we gave you a really, really short version. Alright so, can you give us the proper full version of the sentence?
Seol: 저는 이 사람을 몰라요.
Keith: The first two parts 저는 I and 이 사람을 this person followed by the object marker are both dropped, because you can easily infer what the last part is talking about. 몰라요 I don’t know, and you can easily infer that Minyeong is talking about this person, alright. And once again, be sure to pay attention to the intonation. Okay, 몰라요? is a question and…
Seol: 몰라요.
Keith: Is a statement. So here, 네, 몰라요. “Yes, I don’t know.” Alright, next we have 누구에요? who is, who is this?
Seol: 이 사람은 조지 부시에요.
Keith: Let’s do it real quick.
Seol: 이 사람.
Keith: This person followed by…
Seol: 은
Keith: The topic marking particle and lastly is…
Seol: 조지 부시에요.
Keith: George Bush followed by the copula in the standard politeness level. And if we wanted to make a question out of it, we can say the same exact sentence and just raise the intonation. So here we can say, 이 사람은 조지부시에요? “Is this person George Bush?” but here the intonation is dropping, so this is a statement, “This person is George Bush.” Alright, I think we can finish this up real quick. Seol, help us out.
Seol: 저는 조지 부시를 모ㄹ라요.
Keith: And this is I followed by the topic marking particle George Bush, followed by the object marking particle “don’t know.” So literally, it’s “I George Bush, don’t know.” Alright, let’s practice the object marking particle just a little bit. 윤설씨는 윌 스미스를 알아요?
Seol: 네. 저는 윌 스미스를 알아요.
Keith: Just in case you guys might have forgotten, 알아요? means “to know” the dictionary form is 알다, can you break it down for us?
Seol: 알아요. 알아요.
Keith: Okay. And we use 를 here because Will Smith is…well, the Korean pronunciation is, can you help me out here, over here?
Seol: 윌 스미스
Keith: 스 that last syllable 스 ends in a vowel. So here we use 를. Now let’s go with a different person.
Seol: What about Jackie Chan.
Keith: Okay, 재키 챈을 알아요?
Seol: 네 저는 재키 챈을 알아요.
Keith: Okay, here we use 챈 the object marking particle because 재키 챈 ends in a consonant, 재키 챈. Alright Seol, how do you feel?
Seol: Well, lots of things that we have to study and review, but I love the explanation about 저 and 그. It makes everything clear about 그 and 저.
Keith: Well, that’s only if you’re attaching it to nouns.
Seol: Yeah, that’s right.
Keith: Yeah and so, here it’s 이 사람 this person, 그 사람 that person which is not insight, and 저 사람 which is insight but farther away from you.
Seol: Yeah, you’re explanation is better than our textbook, the textbook that we we’ve learned in high school and middle school.
Keith: What, in Korea?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Alright, I think we did a pretty good job and I enjoyed myself, but now I’m just going to take a nap.
Seol: Yeah, you look tired.
Keith: Yeah, and are you going to go study?
Seol: Yeah, I have to.
Keith: Aren’t you tired?
Seol: I’m tired. I’m really sick and tired of studying.

Outro

Keith: Well, alright, that’s going to do it.
Seol: 안녕!
Keith: 안녕!
