Chigusa: Alright Peter, let’s talk about speaking skills… For someone that just signed up… and they want to start speaking from their first lesson… How do they start? |
Peter: That’s a great question, Chigusa. First things first, listeners, make sure you’re taking the lessons and following our recommended learning pathway. |
Chigusa: Right. If you want to start speaking the language… |
Peter: ...then you’ll need to first hear the language… |
Chigusa: And our lessons do just that: they expose you to practical everyday, conversations |
Peter: So, there are 6 things you can do… |
Chigusa: By the way, you can apply these tactics whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner. |
Peter: The first one is... practice shadowing. |
Chigusa: For anyone new that doesn’t know… Peter, what’s shadowing? |
Peter: Shadowing is a very effective learning tactic and it’s… where you just repeat what someone else says. |
Chigusa: So, as you’re taking our lessons, listen to the lesson conversation and repeat out loud. |
Peter: That’s it. You can do this whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner. |
Chigusa: You can also do this with TV shows but it might be hard if you’re a beginner. They speak fast. |
Peter: But with our lessons, you can easily follow along and repeat. |
Chigusa: Second, save the lesson conversations. |
Peter: Let’s say you did a lesson on how to introduce yourself… you’d want to remember that conversation, right? |
Chigusa: Right. If I can save that conversation and replay it over and over like a song, I’d know those lines by heart. Kind of like when you’re listening to a song over and over. |
Peter: Well, you CAN do that. Listeners, when you finish a lesson… If you want to hold on to the conversation, then download the conversation audio track. That way, you can listen to just the native speech… without translations... and review and shadow it as much as you want. |
Chigusa: And if you have 30 or 40 conversations... that you listen to over and over.. |
Peter: ..then that’s 30 or 40 conversations you have memorized...in your brain… |
Chigusa: ...that you can use to speak more of your target language. |
Peter: Number three: Set a specific goal and practice regularly. |
Chigusa: The reason why most learners aren't good with speaking is because… they don’t put much time into it. |
Peter: So, here’s what you can do. Make it a goal to practice every day… for say 5 minutes. Spend 5 minutes on shadowing the conversation after the lesson. |
Chigusa: Peter, why 5 minutes? |
Peter: I think because 5 minutes is easy to do. It could be 2 minutes, 3 minutes or 10 minutes… whatever you want. But 5 or less is a nice number because you don’t want to overwhelm yourself. The point is to make it easy to do. Make it a part of your routine. |
Chigusa: Do you do this too? |
Peter: Truthfully, whenever I can. So I get about 2 to 4 days a week. Anytime I’m learning… I make sure to set aside a little time to do output… where I’m actually speaking and practicing the language. Again, If you’re not practicing, it’s not as effective learning. Input, or reading or listening alone…this is what we call receptive... is only half of the equation. You need to do output too. Productive. You need to produce something. So listeners, make it a rule for yourself: do 5 minutes of speaking practice every day… that productive practice. And you know, when I said that truthfully before.. If I can’t get to the computer and actually do the shadowing or listen, what I’ll do is talk to myself. So I am, not always on the site. But that 5 minutes is critical every single day. |
Chigusa: If you’re not practicing, you’re not really learning… that’s a very good line! Okay, number four: Record Yourself Speaking the Language. |
Peter: Recording yourself is a powerful tactic. A lot of us don’t know what we sound like… until we hear ourselves. |
Chigusa: Yeah, and then it's like “wait, do i really talk like that?” |
Peter: It’s kind of horrifying to hear your voice for the first time. You’ll notice your pauses, your umms, where you get stuck… and you then know what you need to fix. I think a lot of us in our heads think we sound like professional emcees and then you hear yourself, “you know I don’t really sound like that.” |
Chigusa: Listeners, you can also record and compare yourself with native speakers... |
Peter: ...and this is where that comparison or feedback comes in. If you record yourself and listen and compare, you’re understanding how close you’re getting. And with the voice recording tool inside our lessons. You can hear how a native speaker says a line… versus how you say it. And you can use that to improve your speaking and pronunciation. |
Chigusa: Okay, what’s number 5? |
Peter: Number 5 is… Learn More Words, Phrases and Grammar Rules. |
Chigusa: Simply put, if you want to speak more and express yourself in more ways.. |
Peter: ...then you’ll need to know more words and grammar rules. |
Chigusa: So, Peter, how would you do this? It sounds like a lot of work. |
Peter: The easiest thing to do is… just stick with the lessons and follow our learning pathway. You naturally learn more and more words and grammar rules with every lesson. The longer you stick with it, the more words and rules you’ll pick up… |
Chigusa: ...and you’ll speak more and more of your target language. |
Peter: In addition, with these quizzes inside of our recommended pathway, we’re testing you to see if you really know the work. And if you don’t, you have the chance to go back and review, or you might realize that you’re progressing much faster than you thought. |
Peter: And finally, number 6: Get feedback from native speakers. |
Chigusa: Yes, one of the best ways to improve… is to get feedback from natives. Otherwise, how do you know if you’re any good? |
Peter: With our premium plus plan, you get your own teacher… who will give you feedback. |
Chigusa: You can record yourself speaking, send them the recording… |
Peter: ...and they’ll tell you what to fix. |
Chigusa: I think you can also ask a friend for feedback. But it could be tough. If they want to be nice to you, they’ll say you’re good enough...even if you made a mistake. |
Peter; That’s a great point, Chigusa. I mean, in any language I learned, I rarely got the tough critical feedback I needed from friends. I think this is where you’d want a teacher… someone you pay to give you really honest feedback... whose job is to make you improve… and tell you how much further you have to go. |
Chigusa: Exactly. Listeners, if you listened this far, here’s a bonus: if you want our PDF conversation cheat sheets… that’ll get you speaking even more of the language.. |
Peter: Leave us a comment in the comment’s section of this Sunday News… |
