| Chigusa: Peter, so what is this “secret” blueprint for setting successful goals? |
| Peter: Well, Chigusa, It’s not really a secret... but, if you want to know how I went from failing my goals years ago, to finally succeeding, and learning Japanese... |
| Chigusa: Pay attention, because this is a GREAT lesson... |
| Peter: ...A few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference. In fact, I now apply these to everyday life goals. Not just languages. Because they work so well. |
| Chigusa: What kinds of changes? |
| Peter: First, I set small, measurable goals. Chigusa, most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Japanese or this year I’ll learn Chinese.” |
| Chigusa: Yeah, or “This year, I’ll go to the gym.” |
| Peter: But they’re very vague and unclear goals, don’t you think? |
| Chigusa: Yeah... you wouldn’t know how to approach them. |
| Peter: So I started aiming for smaller, more measurable goals, most importantly with deadlines. For example, for January 2020, I’m learning Hebrew, my goal is to speak 1 minute of conversation, and the deadline is January 31st, 2020. |
| Chigusa: Just 1 minute? Oh, yeah, that is very manageable. |
| Peter: And that’s the point! You can’t lift hundreds of pounds on your first day at the gym... |
| Chigusa: Right! And you can’t expect to be fluent on your first day or your first month either. |
| Peter: But you can start and build up from there. For February, I’ll aim for 3 minutes. March will be 5. And these will add up, so by the end of the year, I’ll reach 30 minutes of conversation. |
| Chigusa: That makes a lot of sense. |
| Peter: So, Listeners, start setting small, monthly goals with a deadline. |
| Chigusa: Are there any other tips you can give to our listeners for 2020? |
| Peter: Listeners, write down a small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. If you’re really, really breave, you can announce it on a social media challenge. We talk about that in a different one but that’s ... a little higher level tactic. Putting it where you can see it every day might sound strange, but believe it or not, it keeps you focused. |
