INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana. |
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi. |
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 41. Giving Advice, Part 2. |
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for making a suggestion. |
PATTERN |
Dana: For example, "How about sleeping some more?" |
Jaehwi: 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
Jaehwi: [slow] 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
Dana: The pattern for making a suggestion has three elements. First, an adverb meaning "more.” |
Jaehwi: 더 (deo). |
Dana: Second, the verb stem plus connective suffix |
Jaehwi: 는건 (neungeun). |
Dana: In this case, it’s… |
Jaehwi: 자는건 (janeungeon). |
Dana: Third, the phrase to make a suggestion. |
Jaehwi: 어때요 (eotteyo). |
Dana: Altogether, we have... "How about sleeping some more?" |
Jaehwi: 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
[slow] 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
[normal] 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
Dana: We have the phrase. |
Jaehwi: 는건 어때요 (neungeon eotteyo) |
Dana: You can use it when making a suggestion. It is attached to a verb stem and is usually used at the end of the sentence. In the sample sentence, we have the adverb… |
Jaehwi: 더 (deo) |
Dana: which means “more”, the verb stem for "sleep" then the phrase… |
Jaehwi: 는건 어때요 (neungeon eotteyo). |
Dana: Altogether, we have... |
Jaehwi: 더 자는건 어때요? (deo janeungeon eottaeyo?) |
Dana: So remember this connective phrase, used in making suggestions, is attached to a verb stem and is used at the end of a sentence. |
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "Why don't you play more?" First, adverb "more". |
Jaehwi: 더 (deo). |
Dana: Second, the verb stem plus connective suffix |
Jaehwi: 는건 (neungeun). |
Dana: In this case, we have… |
Dana: 노는건 (noneungeun). |
Dana: Third, the phrase to make a suggestion. |
Jaehwi: 어때요 (eotteyo). |
Dana: Altogether we have... |
Jaehwi: 더 노는건 어때요? (deo noneungun eotteyo?) |
[slow] 더 노는건 어때요? (deo noneungun eotteyo?) |
[normal] 더 노는건 어때요? (deo noneungun eotteyo?) |
Dana: "Why don't you play more?" |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 더 노는건 어때요? (deo noneungun eotteyo?) |
Dana: How do you ask, "Why don't you eat more?"? To give you a hint, "eat" is... |
Jaehwi: 먹다 (meoktta). [slow] 먹다 (meoktta). [normal] 먹다 (meoktta). |
Dana: "Why don't you eat more?" |
[pause] |

[normal] 더 먹는건 어때요? (deo meogneungeon eotteyo) |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 더 먹는건 어때요? (deo meogneungeon eotteyo) |
