INTRODUCTION
Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com입니다.
Hyunwoo: Hyunwoo here! “It Would Be Different if” Only You Spoke Korean! 경은 씨, what are we going to look at in this lesson? 이 레슨에서 뭐 배울거예요?
Gyeong-eun: In this lesson you will learn how to negate something while making assumptions.
Hyunwoo: And this conversation takes place
Gyeong-eun: in the company.
Hyunwoo: And the conversation is between 태훈 and his bosses.
Gyeong-eun: And 태훈, of course, is using polite language to his bosses, and 태훈's bosses are using intimate language to 태훈.
Hyunwoo: Okay, let’s listen to the conversation.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 들어 봐요.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
부장: 이 과장, 우리 직원 중에 혹시... 독일어 할 수 있는 사람 있어? 오늘 갑자기 독일 거래처 사람들이 회사를 방문한대.
Hyunwoo: Mr. Lee, among our staff, is there by any chance anyone who can speak German? I heard that some of our customers from Germany are visiting our company today all of the sudden.
과장: 아... 영어나 일본어면 몰라도, 독일어는...
Hyunwoo: Oh...well, maybe if it were English or Japanese that we needed, but German...well...
태훈: 과장님. 저 독일어 할 수 있습니다. 어릴 적에 독일에 4년 동안 살았습니다.
Hyunwoo: Sir, I can speak German. I lived in Germany for four years when I was little.
과장: 흠... 부장님, 태훈 씨 괜찮을까요? 또 실수 하면...
Hyunwoo: Hmm... Sir, do you think Taehun will be fine? If he makes a mistake again...
부장: 괜찮아. 맡겨 봐. 다른 사람이 있으면 몰라도, 지금 아무도 없잖아.
Hyunwoo: It's okay. Give him a chance. We wouldn't be worried if we had someone else, but we don't have anyone now.
과장: 근데... 작은 거래처 사람들이 오면 몰라도, 이번에는 중요한 거래처예요.
Hyunwoo: But...I wouldn't worry if customers from a small company were coming, but this time, they are very important customers.
태훈: 괜찮습니다. 할 수 있습니다. 맡겨 주세요, 과장님. 다른 언어면 몰라도, 독일어는 자신 있습니다.
Hyunwoo: It's okay, sir. I can do it. Please let me do it, sir. I wouldn't be so confident about other languages, but I'm confident about German.
부장: 아, 지금 도착했대. 빨리 보내, 빨리.
Hyunwoo: Hey, I got a call that they are here. Make him go there quick!
과장: 태훈 씨, 실수 하면 ... 알지?
Hyunwoo: Taehun, if you make a mistake...you know what's coming, right?
태훈: 네! 다녀오겠습니다!
Hyunwoo: Yes, sir! I'll be back!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: It looks like Taehun finally got his chance to score some bonus points! 보너스 점수를 딸 기회가 생긴 것 같아요, 그렇죠?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 지난 대화에서 실수를 정말 많이 했잖아요.
Hyunwoo: Right.
Gyeong-eun: So he'd better make up for them!
Hyunwoo: But you know, 한국에서는, people don't really feel comfortable saying that they can do something really well, right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, I feel shy talking about what I can do, even if I'm really good at it, I still feel the need to be humble.
Hyunwoo: You're good at ... what, for example? Haha, 예를 들어서 뭐를 잘 해요?
Gyeong-eun: Haha, um... a lot of things. anyway! 지금 그게 중요한 게 아니고요. 하하.
Hyunwoo: I know. Just kidding. And you're right, and people feel the same kind of 'uneasiness' when they refuse someone's offer or favor as well.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: So people like to provide some assumptions, like, I would do it if I were free, but I'm busy, so i can't do it. So, sometimes it may sound like making excuses, 핑계를 대는 것 같지만, but I think it's rather to help the other person understand why it's not possible.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 그래서, 이것을 어떻게 쓰는지 grammar point에서 배울 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Right. we're going to learn how to use this structure in the grammar point.
But for now, let's look at the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Alright, let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to have a look at is,
Gyeong-eun: 맡기다
Hyunwoo: to put someone in charge of something, to entrust someone with something
Gyeong-eun: 맡/기/다, 맡기다
Hyunwoo: you can use this word for a lot of things, right? 예를 들어 볼까요?
Gyeong-eun: 저한테 맡겨 주세요.
Hyunwoo: “Leave it to me”, or “I'll take care of it”.
Gyeong-eun: 가방 좀 맡길게요.
Hyunwoo: “I'll leave my bag here.” Or “Could you please hold onto my bag?”
Gyeong-eun: 이 일은 저한테 맡겨 주세요.
Hyunwoo: “Please put me in charge of this task.” Okay, what's the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 자신 있다
Hyunwoo: “to have confidence”, “to be confident”
Gyeong-eun: 자/신/있/다. 자신있다
Hyunwoo: 자신 means “confidence”, “self trust”, and 있다 is to have, so 자신 있다 is “to be confident”. And the opposite is?
Gyeong-eun: 자신 없다.
Hyunwoo: Alright! 근데 경은 씨는 자신 없는 사람이에요, 자신 있는 사람이에요? 하하.
Gyeong-eun: 어…자신 있는 사람이죠! 현우 씨는요?
Hyunwoo: 하하. 저도 다 자신 있어요. Except for finding places! 길 찾는 것만 빼고 자신 있습니다!
Gyeong-eun: 정말요? 다른건 없어요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 자신 없는거 없습니다. 다 자신 있습니다. Except for finding places, haha. Okay now, let's go to the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: So, what's the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: -(으)면 몰라도
Hyunwoo: “It would be a different story if” / “It would be no problem if (something”)” / as in the example?
Gyeong-eun: 내가 직접 가면 몰라도...
Hyunwoo: "It would be different if I were to go there myself, but... (I'm not going.)"
Gyeong-eun: 내가 직접 가면 몰라도 현우 씨는 못믿겠어요.
Hyunwoo: Haha. “It would be different if you were to go there yourself, but since you’re not going, you can’t trust me”, right?
Gyeong-eun: Haha, 농담이고요.
Hyun Woo: 네.
Gyeong-eun: When you are making an assumption that you would do or would not do something if the circumstances were different, you can use this grammatical structure.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. So, -(으)면 몰라도 literally means "you don't know if ..."
Gyeong-eun: And it implies that you don't know what would happen or what it would be like if things were different.
Hyunwoo: So -으면 몰라도 is often used when you are refusing or making negative statements, although it is used for other types of statements as well. So, if you translate it more naturally, it means "It wouldn't be a problem if..." or "It would be different if..." / So 경은 씨, using this structure, 문장을 어떻게 만들 수 있죠?
Gyeong-eun: You add -(으)면 몰라도 at the end of a verb stem, so 가다 for example becomes 가면 몰라도
Hyunwoo: For example?
Gyeong-eun: 오늘 가면 몰라도, 내일은 못 가.
Hyunwoo: “I would be able to go if we were to go today, but since it’s tomorrow that we are going, I can't go.”
Gyeong-eun: And please not that the copula, 이다 is changed to -(이)면 or -(이)라면 and followed by 몰라도.
Hyunwoo: Okay. So how was this structure used in this dialogue?
Gyeong-eun: 영어나 일본어면 몰라도, 독일어는...
Hyunwoo: "Maybe if it were English or Japanese that we need, but German..."
Gyeong-eun: 다른 사람이 있으면 몰라도, 지금 아무도 없잖아.
Hyunwoo: “We wouldn't be worried if we had someone else, but we don't have anyone now.”
Gyeong-eun: 작은 거래처 사람들이 오면 몰라도, 이번에는 중요한 거래처예요.
Hyunwoo: “I wouldn't worry if customers from a small company were coming, but this time, they are very important customers.”
Gyeong-eun: 다른 언어면 몰라도, 독일어는 자신 있습니다.
Hyunwoo: “I wouldn't be so confident about other languages, but I'm confident about German.” Great. But, you know what, let's have even more examples! So, how would you say "I would be able to do it if someone helps me, but I can't do it alone."
Gyeong-eun: 누가 도와주면 몰라도, 혼자서는 못 해요.
Hyunwoo: 진짜요? You can’t do anything alone by yourself?
Gyeong-eun: Of course.
Hyunwoo: I’m not gonna help you.
Gyeong-eun: 도와주세요.
Hyunwoo: Be nicer to me.
Gyeong-eun: Okay.
Hyunwoo: 저한테 더 잘하세요.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 하하.
How about, And "It wouldn't be a problem if I were 20 years old now, but now, I can't do it. I’m too old."
Gyeong-eun: 내가 지금 20살이면 몰라도, 이제는 안 돼.
Hyunwoo: Great job! You’re not 20 years old anymore.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 현우 씨가 있으면 몰라도, 저 혼자는 못해요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Aww, that’s a nice thing to hear, haha. 웬일이에요? So that just about does it for today, so everyone, 오늘 정말 수고하셨고요, we’ll see you in the next lesson. 다음 레슨에서 뵐게요!
Gyeong-eun: 네, 여러분이 있으면 몰라도, 저희는 혼자 못해요.
Hyunwoo: Ahh, that’s a nice thing to say, too.
Gyeong-eun: 안녕히 계세요.
Hyunwoo: See you at the website. 어디죠?
Gyeong-eun: KoreanClass101.com입니다.
Hyunwoo: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
Gyeong-eun: 안녕히 계세요.
