POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Minkyong: I have a friend like this in Korea. She bought everything in her entire wardrobe online.
Keith: Yeah Korean people tend to like shopping online. Korea has a big Internet shopping culture and you can buy anything on the Internet and it’s fast.
Seol: Yeah. Since Korea is not very big in land mass, the delivery service is really fast and it only takes a couple of days before you can receive your order.
Keith: Yeah. As far as I know, sometimes you can make an order in the morning and get the product in the afternoon right?
Seol: Yes. Some stores offer super fast delivery service like that. I buy a lot of things online too
Minkyong: But I don’t like to buy things online. Things I receive are always different from the pictures online. I always get so disappointed.
Keith: Ah so that’s why you are always dressed like that. I am just kidding, it’s a joke, it’s a joke but yeah electronics are actually much cheaper online and they are the same you know. So if you are scared of buying things online and if you are addicted to buying things online like the daughter in today’s dialogue, you can often hear the expression “Again?” from the people around you.
Seol: Yeah my sisters often ask me the question too.
Keith: Yeah and that’s the focus of today’s lesson but before we have a look at it, let’s have a look at today’s vocabulary words.
Minkyong: 좋아요. Sounds good.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: All right. So now, we are going to take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to take a look at is
Minkyong: 그리고 (geurigo).
Keith: It means and, also. It’s used just like the English word and or also. It’s a conjunction that joins words, phrases and sentences. How did they come out in this dialogue?
Seol: 은경 (Eungyeong) said 그리고 가방 (geurigo gabang).
Keith: And bags
Minkyong: And she also said 그리고 지갑 그리고… (geurigo jigap geurigo...)
Keith: And wallets and
Seol: You just need to add 그리고 (geurigo) afterwards and that means the word plus and. It’s very simple to use.
Keith: And we are Seol 그리고 (geurigo) Minkyong 그리고 (geurigo) Keith.
Minkyong: Nice example.
Keith: Okay. So what’s the next word?
Seol: 사 (sa).
Keith: To buy and this is in informal Korean, the intimate politeness level. What’s the dictionary form of this word?
Seol: 사다 (sada).
Keith: And what if you want to be polite? How do you say that?
Seol: 사요 (sayo).
Keith: So can we have a sample sentence?
Minkyong: 나 책 사 (na chaek sa).
Keith: I am buying a book.
Seol: 나 커피 사 (na keopi sa).
Keith: I am buying some coffee. Okay you are going to buy me coffee too?
Seol: Sure.
Keith: Right after we take a look at the focus of this lesson.
Seol: Okay.

Lesson focus

Keith: What are we focusing on in this lesson?
Minkyong: The focus of this lesson is how to say “again” in Korean, 또 (tto).
Keith: It’s very short and abrupt. 또 (tto).
Seol: Yeah. It’s easy to remember. 또 (tto), 또 (tto).
Keith: I got it, I got it.
Seol: Okay.
Keith: So this 또 (tto) means again in Korean and just like in English, this word can give off various nuances depending on the tone of speech by the speaker. So what does that mean? Can you give us an example?
Minkyong: If you say it plainly, it just means “again” or “once again.”
Keith: So for example
Seol: When you finish eating and leave the restaurant, the waiter says 또 오세요 (Tto oseyo).
Keith: Please come again and that one is actually very – just neutral, just again. So how about if it’s a rising tone?
Minkyong: If you say it with a rising tone, you can express sarcasm or surprise. For example, I have been eating all day and I am looking for something else to eat again and my mom says 또 먹어? (Tto meogeo?)
Keith: Are you eating again? Okay can we have some sample sentences then?
Seol: When I say goodbye to my friends 또 보자 (Tto boja).
Keith: See you again and that’s informal Korean. Can you be sarcastic with that? 또? (tto?) It doesn’t really work like that?
Seol: No, no, no I can do it. Let me try. 또? (tto?) 또? (tto?) 또 보자고? Was I being sarcastic?
Keith: Oh let’s see each other again?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Okay but…
Seol: No, not really?
Keith: No, that was very sarcastic truly.
Minkyong: Or you can just use the 또 (tto) by itself. 또? (tto?) in the rising intonation.
Keith: Again, all right. So how did it come out in this dialogue?
Seol: The word mom said 또? 뭐 사? (Tto? mwo sa?)
Keith: "Again? What are you buying?"
Minkyong: And she also said 구두? 또 사? (Gudu? tto sa?)
Keith: “Shoes? You are buying them again?”
Seol: And the last 엄마 said 또 가방 사? (Tto gabang sa?)
Keith: "You're buying bags again?"

Outro

Keith: So that just about does it for this lesson.
okay. See you, everyone, again.
Seol: 또 봐요 (tto bwayo).
Minkyong: 안녕히 계세요. (annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
