INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: And I am Hyunwoo. Give Me Something Nice. What we are going to learn how to say in Korean today will be very, very useful in asking for something. You can be very, very specific in making choices or talking about your choices.
Mihyeon: 그래서 뭐가 갖고 싶어요? 이렇게 예쁜 아가씨가 앞에 있는데 뭐가 더 필요해요?
Hyunwoo: 네? 어디요? Where is the pretty girl that you are talking about? 예쁜 여자가 어디 있어요?
Mihyeon: 어, 안되겠네. 저 그냥 갈까요?
Hyunwoo: 아니에요, 아니에요.
Mihyeon: 아, 네.
Hyunwoo: Please stay. 가지 마세요. 농담이에요 농담. Who doesn’t know you are pretty? Everybody knows.
Mihyeon: 음...현우씨요. 현우씨가 모르는 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 아니에요. 예쁜 미현시, 한 번만 봐 주세요. Please let it slide and please be nice enough to introduce today’s dialogue.
Mihyeon: 네, 오늘 한 번만 봐 드리겠습니다.
Hyunwoo: 네, 감사합니다.
Mihyeon: 네, 오늘 대화에서는 한 남자하고 점원이 이야기하고 있어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. The conversation is between a man and a shop clerk.
Mihyeon: 그리고 남자는 딸이 있는 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: And the man seems to have a daughter.
Mihyeon: 남자가 가게의 손님이니까 점원하고 존댓말로 이야기하고 있습니다.
Hyunwoo: Okay let’s give it a listen.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
(1)점원: 어서오세요. 뭐 찾으세요?
(1)Clerk: Welcome. Are you looking for anything?
(2)아빠: 우리 딸이 가방을 사달라고 해서요.
(2)Father: My daughter wants me to buy her a bag.
(3)점원: 아, 어떤 가방을 찾으세요?
(3)Clerk: Ah, what kind of bag are you looking for?
(4)아빠: 아... 학생이니까 책가방으로 좀 보여 주세요.
(4)Father: Oh…Since she's a student, show me some backpacks.
(5)점원: 아, 네, 손님. 요즘 이 책가방이 유행이에요. 어떠세요?
(5)Clerk: Yes, sir. This bag is very popular these days. What do you think?
(6)아빠: 예쁘네요. 딸이 예쁜 가방으로 사달라고 했는데…
(6)Father: It's pretty. My daughter wanted a pretty bag...
(7)점원: 그럼 이거 좋아할 거예요.
(7)Clerk: Then she'll like this one.
(8)아빠: 네, 그럼 이거 하나 주세요.
(8)Father: Ok, then I'll take it.
(9)점원: 네, 감사합니다.
(9)Clerk: Okay, thank you.
(10)아빠: (집에 와서) 딸! 아빠가 가방 사 왔다!
(10)Father: (At home) I got a bag for you, my daughter!
(11)딸: 아빠. 지금 장난이죠? 제가 핸드백 사 달라고 했잖아요!
(11)Daughter: Dad, are you joking? I told you to get me a handbag!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: 잘 들어 보셨어요, 미현씨?
Mihyeon: 네. 아우 그런데 어떡해요. 핸드백이라고 말했는데 책가방을 샀죠?
Hyunwoo: Maybe the daughter didn’t really tell him specifically what she wanted.
Mihyeon: 아니에요. 핸드백이라고 말한 것 같은데요?
Hyunwoo: 그래요? If you really told him to buy a handbag for her and her father brought a backpack, I guess she’d be really upset by now.
Mihyeon: 네. 근데 현우씨도 결혼하면 이런 아빠가 되는 거 아니에요?
Hyunwoo: 네? Oh no way! I am sure I will be a father who knows exactly what my children need. 아닌 것 같아요?
Mihyeon: 네... 좀?
Hyunwoo: And I actually think I know what our listeners need now and that is the vocab. So let’s talk about the vocab.
Mihyeon: 좋아요.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: So 첫 번째 단어는 뭐예요, 미현씨? What’s the first word?
Mihyeon: 장난
Hyunwoo: Practical joke, teasing.
Mihyeon: 장난 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 장난 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: So what’s a joke in Korean?
Mihyeon: 농담, 농담이에요.
Hyunwoo: 네. And 장난 is a 농담 that you actually do. So it’s a practical joke. Teasing or mischief and what’s the verb for this word? What’s the 동사?
Mihyeon: 장난을 치다라고 해요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 장난을 치다. So how do you say stop teasing me, stop joking or stop fooling around.
Mihyeon: 장난치지 마세요! 이렇게 말해요. 현우씨는 장난 별로 안 치는 거 같은데 친구들이랑 장난 많이 치고 놀아요?
Hyunwoo: Well 저요? I do fool around a lot with my close friends. 제가 미현씨하고는 별로 안 친해서. We are not so close right?
Mihyeon: Ah…
Hyunwoo: 장난을 별로 안 치죠.
Mihyeon: 네. 좋은 건지 나쁜 건지 모르겠네요. 안 친하다는 건데?
Hyunwoo: Please just take it as a good meaning. 네. And please give us the next word.
Mihyeon: 네? 그러면 빨리 넘어가죠.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Mihyeon: 유행
Hyunwoo: Trend, fashion.
Mihyeon: 유행 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 유행 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 네. 유행 isn’t something that I have much to talk about because I don’t follow it but 미현씨 do you follow some 유행?
Mihyeon: 음...글쎄요 저도 유행을 그렇게 많이 따르지는 않아요. 그렇지만 여자이니까 아무래도 현우씨보다는 유행에 민감한 편이겠죠?
Hyunwoo: Umm 네 I think so but what was the word again?
Mihyeon: 유행에 민감하다. 민감.
Hyunwoo: 민감. 민감하다 means to be sensitive and how do you say dull or not sensitive?
Mihyeon: 둔감하다
Hyunwoo: Yes so 미현씨는 when it comes to fashion, 저보다 민감해요. Okay. So 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 손님
Hyunwoo: Customer, guest.
Mihyeon: 손님 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 손님 [natural native speed] 손님이라는 단어는 참 느낌이 좋은 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it really does have a good feeling to it and there is another word that has the same meaning as 손님 but it is more commonly used in business places. What is it?
Mihyeon: 네. 고객이라는 단어가 있어요. 고객, 고객님.
Hyunwoo: In what kind of places can you be called a 고객 or 고객님?
Mihyeon: 백화점이나 은행에서요. 백화점이나 은행에서 고객님, 이쪽으로 오세요 이렇게 말하는 거 많이 들어 보셨죠?
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. In department stores and banks, they call you 고객님 instead of just 손님.
Mihyeon: 그리고 회사에서 보내는 광고 이메일에서는 항상 고객님이라고 해요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah commercial emails too. So okay 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 책가방
Hyunwoo: Backpack.
Mihyeon: 책가방 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 책가방 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: This word is very easy when you break it down.
Mihyeon: 네. 책 그리고 가방이에요. 책, 가방, 책가방.
Hyunwoo: So it’s literally a bag for books. So how do you say to carry a backpack? What’s the verb for a 가방, 책가방?
Mihyeon: 책가방을 메다.
Hyunwoo: Yes 책가방을 메다. So you can also say 핸드백을 메다 or side bag 사이드 백을 메다. So remember to use the verb 메다 for 가방. Okay so before we go on to today’s grammar point, 미현씨 if you were to pick just one word for our listeners to remember from this vocab list, what would you choose?
Mihyeon: 음...좀 고르기 어려운데요 오늘? 하지만 유행이요. 유행이 좀 좋을 것 같은데요?
Hyunwoo: 아, 유행. Okay so if you forget everything else, please remember 유행.
Mihyeon: 유행
Hyunwoo: Trend or fashion. Okay 그러면 on to the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Mihyeon: 현우씨, 오늘의 문법 포인트는 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: Yeah today we have two grammar points. 오늘의 첫 번째 문법 포인트 today’s first grammar point is how to say to ask someone to do something for you. This is very useful when you want to say, she asked me to do this for her or I asked him to help me with this. So what is this structure in Korean?
Mihyeon: 네. 아/어/여 달라고 하다.
Hyunwoo: One more time please.
Mihyeon: 아/어/여 달라고 하다.
Hyunwoo: 네. 아/어/여 달라고 하다 is a grammatical structure that expresses to ask someone to do something. 달라고 can be changed to 주라고 using the verb 주다. But 달라고 is more common and here 하다 means to say. So it can be replaced with
Mihyeon: 말하다
Hyunwoo: To say
Mihyeon: 얘기하다
Hyunwoo: To talk
Mihyeon: 요청하다
Hyunwoo: To request
Mihyeon: 요구하다
Hyunwoo: To demand and so on.
Mihyeon: 네. 정말 저도 많이 쓰는 표현이에요.
Hyunwoo: And if you want to go back and study more about the 아/어/여 conjugation, please check out Beginner Season 1, Lesson #25 and check out the grammar bank in the learning center.
Mihyeon: 네. 꼭 복습해 보세요.
Hyunwoo: 네. So how was this structure used in today’s dialogue. 오늘의 대화에서는 어떻게 쓰였어요?
Mihyeon: 아빠가 우리 딸이 가방을 사달라고 해서요라고 했습니다.
Hyunwoo: 네. The father said, my daughter wants me to buy her a bag.
Mihyeon: 아빠가 딸이 예쁜 가방으로 사달라고 했는데...라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. The father also said, my daughter wanted a pretty bag. So literally, my daughter asked me to buy her a pretty bag. Okay so please give us a couple more example sentences.
Mihyeon: 네. 어, 예를 들어서 이런 문장이 있어요. 남동생이 자꾸 놀아 달라고 해요.
Hyunwoo: 네. My younger brother keeps asking me to play with him.
Mihyeon: 또 민경씨가 전화해 달라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Mingyeong wants you to call her back. Okay on to the next grammar point. The second grammar point of today is the selection particle. This is 으로 or 로.
Mihyeon: 으로, 로.
Hyunwoo: This is most commonly used for directions right?
Mihyeon: 네. 방향을 말할 때 제일 많이 쓰여요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah but here this 으로 or 로 is used as a particle that indicates selection. It serves the same purpose as the object marker in many cases but since this particle originally has the meaning of toward or to which represent directions even when it’s used as the selection particle, it has the nuance of leaning toward a choice.
Mihyeon: 맞아요. 그러면 오늘 대화에서 쓰인 문장들을 한번 볼까요? 먼저 아빠가 아... 학생이니까 책가방으로 좀 보여 주세요라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. Using this 으로 or 로 the father said 책가방으로 좀 보여 주세요 which means, since she is a student, show me some backpacks.
Mihyeon: 네. 또 아빠가 예쁘네요. 딸이 예쁜 가방으로 사달라고 했는데...라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: 네. The father also said it’s pretty. My daughter is wanting the pretty bag and for your information, 으로 and 로 has several usages like many other particles in Korean and today’s PDF has more info on these usages. So please check it out and 미현씨 could you give us a few example sentences of 로 or 으로 being used in a sentence?
Mihyeon: 오늘 저녁은 피자로 먹자.
Hyunwoo: Let’s have pizza for dinner tonight.
Mihyeon: 여기에서 제일 맛있는 것으로 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Please give me the most delicious one here.
Mihyeon: 더 큰 것으로 가지고 오세요.
Hyunwoo: Please bring something bigger. Well, okay I think that’s it for today. 여기까지에요, 미현씨, 오늘은.

Outro

Mihyeon: 벌써 끝났어요?
Hyunwoo: 네. So thank you once again 미현씨. 그리고 thank you once again for listening and I hope you are enjoying learning Korean with us.
Mihyeon: 그럼 여러분, 다음 주에 또 만나요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 안녕히 계세요.
Mihyeon: 안녕히 계세요.
