seonghun: minseo-ya!
minseo: eo, seonghun oppa. annyeonghaseyo.
seonghun: annyeong. doseogwan ga?
minseo: doseogwan-iyo? aniyo. jeo jigeum su-eop deureureo gayo.

seonghun: gwaenchana. an geollyeo.
minseo: jeo-do chael billyeoya doeneunde, chaek mot billimyeon eotteokaeyo?
seonghun: gwaenchana. gwaenchana. ya, neo su-eop neujeumyeon eotteokhae? ppalli haksaengjeung jugo ga.
minseo: eum... oppa geureomyeon jeoldae geolliji maseyo! yeogiyo. najung-e jeonhwa juseyo.
seonghun: geurae geurae. gomawo! o... minseo haksaengjeung sajin-i wae ireoke yeppeo?
Seonghun: Hey, Minseo.
Minseo: Oh, Seonghun. Hi.
Seonghun: Hi. Are you going to the library?
Minseo: To the library? No. I'm on my way to take my class.
Seonghun: You are? That's good. Lend me your student card. I have to borrow a book from the library, but I didn't bring mine.
Minseo: My student card? What if you get caught?
Seonghun: It's okay. I'm not going to get caught.
Minseo: I have to borrow books. What if I can't borrow books?
Seonghun: It's all right. It's all right. Hey, you shouldn't be late for the class! Give me your student card quickly and go.
Minseo: Hmm...then please make sure you don't get caught! Here. Give me a call later.
Seonghun: Okay. Okay. Thanks! (to himself) Wow...she looks so gorgeous in this picture on her student card!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: So, 경은씨, what was the word for student card?
Gyeongeun: 학생증
Hyunwoo: Right. Have you ever borrowed anybody’s 학생증 before?
Gyeongeun: I don’t know. I don’t think I have. Why?
Hyunwoo: Because it’s always funny to look at the student card photos. 학생증 사진.
Gyeongeun: Yeah right.
Hyunwoo: The photos that people submit for their student cards are usually photos from their high school days or just after they graduated and people don’t usually change their student card photo for a longtime.
Gyeongeun: Yeah right. So they have a photo of when they were 20 years old even when they are 26 years old.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and I personally think that’s a bigger reason that 민서 in this dialogue was hesitating to land her student card to someone.
Gyeongeun: Maybe
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: Maybe. Okay now let’s move on to the vocabulary of this lesson. Okay what’s the first word in today’s vocabulary?
Gyeongeun: 도서관
Hyunwoo: Library.
Gyeongeun: 도서관 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 도서관 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 수업
Hyunwoo: Class, lesson.
Gyeongeun: 수업 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 수업 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Gyeongeun: 수업을 듣다
Hyunwoo: To take a class, to go to a lecture.
Gyeongeun: 수업을 듣다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 수업을 듣다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Gyeongeun: 학생증
Hyunwoo: Student card.
Gyeongeun: 학생증 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 학생증 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 빌리다
Hyunwoo: To borrow, to rent.
Gyeongeun: 빌리다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 빌리다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그리고
Gyeongeun: 걸리다
Hyunwoo: To get caught.
Gyeongeun: 걸리다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 걸리다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 그 다음에는
Gyeongeun: 절대
Hyunwoo: Never
Gyeongeun: 절대 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 절대 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Okay now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are looking at is
Gyeongeun: 걸리다
Hyunwoo: To be caught.
Gyeongeun: 걸리다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 걸리다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Here 걸리다 means to be caught but actually this verb can be translated into many different English words.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. For example, you can say 전화가 걸리다.
Hyunwoo: A phone call is made, a phone is dialed. So when a phone isn’t working, you can say 전화가 안 걸려요.
Gyeongeun: 네. And also 감기에 걸리다.
Hyunwoo: To catch a cold 감기에 걸리지 마세요, 여러분. As you can see, 걸리다 has a lot of meanings but here it was used as to be caught doing something or to be busted.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: 그럼 그 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Gyeongeun: 절대
Hyunwoo: Absolutely not, never.
Gyeongeun: 절대 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 절대 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: When you look up never in your dictionary, you sometimes see words like 결코, 전혀 but 절대 is the most commonly used word.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요. 결코는 평소에 잘 안 써요.
Hyunwoo: Right. We don’t use the word 결코 very often in everyday conversations. 우리는 결코 결코를 자주 안 써요. All right. So how about we have a look at the grammar point of today’s lesson?
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: Okay what’s the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeongeun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say What If to show one’s worries and concerns.
Hyunwoo: As in the example.
Gyeongeun: 늦으면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: What if you are late?
Gyeongeun: When you are worried about something that might happen or not happen and want to say what if, you can use this structure 으면 어떡해요.
Hyunwoo: Right and the part 어떡해요 means what should I do or what must we do. So 어떡해요 is not actually just one verb right?
Gyeongeun: 네. 어떡해요 actually comes from 어떻게 해요.
Hyunwoo: And of course, you can drop the 요 at the end to say this in the intimate language.
Gyeongeun: Yeah and although the basic meaning of this structure is what if someone does something or what if something happens, when you say this after something already happened, it is used as a way of accusing or blaming someone.
Hyunwoo: For example.
Gyeongeun: 지금 오면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: If you get here now, what am I supposed to do or you shouldn’t be arriving now. Okay so basically how do you form a sentence with this structure?
Gyeongeun: verb stem plus 으면 어떡해요.
Hyunwoo: For example
Gyeongeun: 오다 is to come. So you change it to 오면 어떡해요.
Hyunwoo: Then for example, how do you say what if a lot of people come.
Gyeongeun: 사람들이 많이 오면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: Great. Now let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Gyeongeun: 걸리면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: What if you get caught?
Gyeongeun: 책 못 빌리면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: What if I can’t borrow books?
Gyeongeun: 너 수업 늦으면 어떡해?
Hyunwoo: What if you are late for the class, you shouldn’t be late for the class. Okay now before we go, let’s look at three more examples please. How do you say in Korean, what if nobody comes?
Gyeongeun: 아무도 안 오면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: And how do you say what if it’s too expensive?
Gyeongeun: 너무 비싸면 어떡해요?
Hyunwoo: And now on an accusing tone which you are good at, how do you say, why are you telling me that now?
Gyeongeun: 지금 말해주면 어떡해요?
