INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Yunseorimnida.)
Minkyong: 안녕하세요. 민경입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Mingyeongimnida.)
Keith: Hey. Keith here. Making Smart Comparisons in Korean
Keith: Hello, and welcome back to the KoreanClass101.com, the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Korean!
Keith: Alright! So in one of our previous Beginner Season 3 lessons, we went over superlatives.
Minkyong: 저는 제일 착해요.
Seol: 가장 좋아하는 요리는 한국요리예요.
Keith: But that's talking about the best, or the most. What if I want to say I like 민경, just as much as I like you, Seol?
Seol: Well, that's what this lesson is about!
Keith: In this lesson you will learn how to say that you are about this mad or if you're this tired. We'll be going over the particle...
Seol: 만큼.
Keith: Alright. Minkyong, can you tell us a little bit about the conversation?
Minkyong: The conversation is between two guys talking about their money, their cars, basically their manhood.
Keith: Money, cars, and their muscles.
Seol: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers will be speaking informal Korean, 반말.
Keith: So, let's take a look at the conversation.
DIALOGUE
진호: 철호야... 니가 나만큼 머리 좋아?
철호: 아니... 나보다 니가 머리 좋아.
진호: 음... 니가 나보다 돈이 많아?
철호: 아니... 나는 너만큼 돈 없어.
진호: 니 차가 내 차만큼 좋아?
철호: 아니... 나는 차 없잖아.
진호: 근데, 왜 너는 여자친구가 있고, 나는 여자친구가 없어? 왜? 왜? 왜!!!!
Seol: 한번 더 천천히
진호: 철호야... 니가 나만큼 머리 좋아?
철호: 아니... 나보다 니가 머리 좋아.
진호: 음... 니가 나보다 돈이 많아?
철호: 아니... 나는 너만큼 돈 없어.
진호: 니 차가 내 차만큼 좋아?
철호: 아니... 나는 차 없잖아.
진호: 근데, 왜 너는 여자친구가 있고, 나는 여자친구가 없어? 왜? 왜? 왜!!!!
Seol: 영어로 한번 더
진호: 철호야... 니가 나만큼 머리 좋아?
Keith: Cheolho, are you as smart as I am?
철호: 아니... 나보다 니가 머리 좋아.
Keith: No, you're smarter than me.
진호: 음... 니가 나보다 돈이 많아?
Keith: Hmm. do you have more money than I have?
철호: 아니... 나는 너만큼 돈 없어.
Keith: No, I’m not as rich as you are.
진호: 니 차가 내 차만큼 좋아?
Keith: Is your car as good as mine is?
철호: 아니... 나는 차 없잖아.
Keith: No, I don't have a car.
진호: 근데, 왜 너는 여자친구가 있고, 나는 여자친구가 없어? 왜? 왜? 왜!!!!
Keith: Then, why do you have a girlfriend and I don't? Why? Why? Why!!!!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: This isn't part of our lesson today, but I think this lesson might be a good lesson to review the comparative.
Seol: That's 보다.
Minkyong: So in this conversation, there was 나보다 니가 머리 좋아.
Keith: You're smarter than me. So let's have a comparative contest, see who's better at what? 설 and 민경, are you ready? And for those of you listening, this will be a good review of the comparative, so listen in.
Keith: 누가 더 커요?
Seol: (답 한국어 &번역)
Minkyong: Seol is taller than Minkyong.
Keith: 민경이가 설 누나보다 더 착해요?
Seol: (답 한국어 &번역)
Minkyong: Minkyong is nicer than Seol.
Seol: Yeah, you're right.
Keith: 설 누나가 민경이보다 키가 커요?
Minkyong: (답 한국어 &번역)
Keith: She's not smarter than I am. No way.
Minkyong: Yes, she is.
Seol: Thank you guys!
Keith: Well, since you're smarter than me, won't you help us out with the vocabulary?
Seol: Sounds great!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: So how about we take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson?
Minkyong: The first phrase we'll look at is 머리가 좋다.
Keith: To be smart. Now what is this literally?
Seol: 머리 means head. And 좋다 means good. So literally, this means your head is good. But we say this to mean smart.
Minkyong: And you can say the same thing using a similar phrase about being not so smart. Kind of being dumb.
Seol: 머리가 나쁘다.
Keith: Literally, your head is bad. But there's another word that means the same things as 머리가 좋다. 다른 단어 있죠?
Minkyong: 네, 있어요. 그 똑똑하다도 말해요.
Keith: And what's the difference between 똑똑하다 and 머리가 좋다.
Minkyong: 머리가 좋다 is like you're naturally smart and 똑똑하다 is you know a lot.
Keith: Because you're studying or also because you're naturally smart.
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: Ok, so as we're taking a look at 머리가 좋다, let’s have a sample sentence.
Seol: 하버드 학생들은 머리가 좋아요.
Keith: Harvard students are smart. And that one's naturally smart. How did it come out in this lesson?
Minkyong: 철호가 이렇게 말 했어요... 나보다 니가 머리 좋아.
Keith: You're smarter than me. But that's literally, your head is better than mine. What if you have a really nice head? Like a nice shape or something? How do you say that?
Minkyong: 머리가 예쁘다
Seol: Or 머리가 멋있다 instead of 머리가 좋다
Keith: So that phrase, 머리가 좋다 is strictly for how smart you are.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: So let’s take a look at our next word, 민경, 다음 단어가 뭐예요?
Minkyong: 다음 단어는... "근데"예요.
Keith: 'but.'
Seol: 대화에는 we usually say 근데, but it's actually 그런데.
Keith: And is there a difference?
Minkyong: Not really, 근데 is just more conversational, 회화적인, than 그런데.
Keith: Right, and this word always starts a new sentence to contrast it to the last sentence or statement. This is a pretty easy word, but we want to remind everyone that this word always starts your sentences. So which sentence did it start in this lesson's conversation?
Seol: 진호가 이렇게 말했어요... 근데, 왜 너는 여자친구가 있고, 나는 여자친구가 없어?
Keith: But why do you have a girlfriend, and I don't?
Minkyong: 근데... 문법으로 넘어 가야 돼지 않아요?
Keith: Oh! 머리 좋네! And good use of 근데! That was nice.

Lesson focus

Keith: Alright. So what's our grammar point? 뭐를 공부 할 거예요?
Minkyong: 오늘의 문법 포인트는 '만큼'이에요.
Keith: And this is a particle and it's used to indicate an extent or a degree, by comparing the subject or object to something else. It comes after a noun and it means 'as much as' or 'equal to'.
Seol: But our listeners have to be careful. This is not the comparative 보다.
Keith: We use this particle to show how much we like something or do something. That's why we translate it as 'as much as' or 'equal to.'
Seol: So 민경이가 진짜 착하잖아요.
Keith: Yea, 민경's really nice!
Seol: Then I can say, 저는, 민경만큼 착하지 않아요.
Keith: I'm not as kind or nice as 민경. And if you noticed there, we attached 만큼, our particle, to 민경.
Seol: 민경만큼.
Keith: as something as Minkyong. And that something has to come from somewhere else in the sentence. In this particular sentence, it came out at the end. 착하다. To be nice, to be kind.
미경: 언니 고마워요! 근데. 저는 언니만큼 머리가 좋지 않아요.
Keith: I'm not as smart as Seol. Can we have how it came out in this lesson's conversation?
Seol: 오늘의 대화에는, 이렇게 나왔어요. "나는 너만큼 돈 없어."
Keith: I don't have as much money as you. And in all our examples that we've mentioned so far, we've translated as "not as nice as" or "not as smart as." But that's because we used a negative verb in those sentences. If you used a positive verb, you'll be saying "I'm as smart as you" or "I have as much money as you do."
Minkyong: 네 맞아요. 예를 들면... "저는 오빠만큼 똑똑해요."
Keith: "I'm as smart as Keith." That means you must be really smart. That's what my mom tells me.
Minkyong: I think this is negative.
Keith: Alright. Well, we didn't get to go into the actual construction of this grammar pattern, because there's two different conjugations depending on if it's a verb or a noun you’re attaching this to.

Outro

Keith: Ok. See everyone later.
Seol: 안녕히 계세요.
Minkyong: 안녕히 계세요.
