I have a question. The first line in the dialogue said:
찾는 거 있으세요?
What does that mean literally and what is that “거”? What does it do? I see it everywhere and I want to know what it means. Thanks!
Thursday at 7:29 am
Hi Matt,
That 거 literally means “thing.”
The reason we use 거 (also known as 것) is because what comes before that: “찾는.” This literally translates to “____ you’re finding.” Therefore it needs something to modify. So a lot of times people just use 거 (or 것) in order to be non-specific. So there it means “is there something you’re looking for?”
You’ll see 거 (것) often. But you can see other nouns to be more specific as well.
For example:
찾는 사람 있으세요?
(Is there someone you’re looking for?)
찾는 음식 있으세요?
(Is there some food you’re looking for?)
I hope this is helpful!

great lesson!
this is true for me right now.. SLR 카메라가 살고싶어요, 근대, 500,000원 밖에 없어요.
but also, i don’t know how to use SLR cameras, so how can I say that? what is the correct verb for “to use” when talking about a camera : 쓰다 or 사용 ? and is it different if you are using it in a negative way, such as “I don’t know how to use …”? Thanks…

항상 고마워.

Very helpful there Keith.

I think you meant 사고 싶어요. Unless you meant you wanted the camera to live.
Live camera! Live!!!!!
:)
As for I don’t know how to use an SLR camera, I would use 저는 SLR 카메라를 할수 없어요. You’re saying you can’t use an SLR camera. If you want to stress that you don’t know how, I don’t know. But let me throw out a guess and see what others think. 저는 SLR 카메라 하기를 몰라요. or maybe 저는 SLR 카메라 하는 것을 몰라요. I’m still unclear on those grammar points so those who know better, please advise.

Keith, thanks for the explanation. What if it is seen in a sentence such as:
바람맞은거야?
Would it still work the same way? Or sometimes I see a sentence that looks like this:
그래도 내가 너 좋아하는 거 알지?
So when can this 거 be used? Sometimes I see it in places I don’t expect and was just wondering. Thanks!

어젯밤에 나한테 “그녕 가고 나를 잊어”라고 했는데 너밖에 아무도 사랑하지 않잖아! 너를 저기에 못 따라가면 죽을지도 몰라…알지?!?

Dear KoreanClass101,
In the expanded vocab. section, the sample sentence in the first item does not match the featured vocab. word. You might want to fix that.
찾다 ( to search for, to look for )
저는 일 제안을 마다했습니다.
“I refused the job offer.
