| Hyunwoo: Well I donโt think I am old enough to talk about this as if it was something that happened a long, long time ago but when I was young, most people thought it was just unacceptable to buy Kimchi from a store. |
| Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. It was just considered to be one of the major responsibilities of women. |
| Hyunwoo: Exactly and my mother too, she is in her mid-50s and she used to make all the Kimchi herself. |
| Miseon: ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ์๋ง๋ ๋ง์ฐฌ๊ฐ์ง์์. |
| Hyunwoo: ์ ๊ทธ๋์? |
| Miseon: ํญ์ ๋ง๋์ธ์. |
| Hyunwoo: ๋ค. But I think itโs changing a little bit right? |
| Miseon: ๋ค๋ค. Itโs changing a little bit. You know, sometimes a lot actually. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: Especially like younger generation. |
| Hyunwoo: Right yeah and my mother still likes to make Kimchi herself and the Kimchi she makes is like the best Kimchi in the world at least to me but she sometimes goes to a Kimchi store and buys some Kimchi. |
| Miseon: ๋ค, ์ ๋์. |
| Hyunwoo: Me too. |
| Miseon: And for small amounts, you can buy little packs of Kimchi at any convenience store in Korea too. |
| Hyunwoo: Sure and they are very cheap too. Less than like USD1 for each pack and they are quite tasty too. |
| Miseon: But I still think as far as Kimchi goes, itโs best to make it at home. |
| Hyunwoo: I agree. |
| Miseon: Even though I canโt make it. |
| Hyunwoo: You canโt? |
| Miseon: Sorry. My mom didnโt teach me. Itโs her fault. |

| Hyunwoo: Okay letโs have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to have a look at is |

| Hyunwoo: All, whole, totally. |
| Miseon: ์ ๋ถ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ ๋ถ [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: And this word ์ ๋ถ literally means entire plus part. |
| Miseon: ๋ค. ์ means entire and ๋ถ means part. |
| Hyunwoo: Can you give us some example sentences using this word. |
| Miseon: ๊ทธ๋ผ์ |
| Hyunwoo: ๋ค. |
| Miseon: ์ ๋ถ ์ฃผ์ธ์. |
| Hyunwoo: Give me all of them. |
| Miseon: ์ ๋ถ ์์ด์? |
| Hyunwoo: Did everybody come? So it can be used to refer to people too. |
| Miseon: ๋ค. But one thing that is interesting is that this word ์ ๋ถ is often used together with the word ๋ค which also means all or totally. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah so ์ ๋ถ means all and ๋ค means all but people often say ์ ๋ถ ๋ค together. |
| Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. ์ ๋ถ ๋ค ์ฃผ์ธ์, ํ์ฐ์จ. |
| Hyunwoo: Give you everything? ์ ๋ถ ๋ค ์์ด์? Like this. |
| Miseon: ๋ค. But there is not much difference in the nuance if you just use one of these words or both of them together. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah it just comes out of habit and itโs one of the patterns that Korean people just happen to use without noticing and itโs good to know right? |
| Miseon: Uh-huh. Itโs more like rhythmic, right? ์ ๋ถ ๋ค. |
| Hyunwoo: ๋ค, ์ ๋ถ ๋ค. |
| Miseon: ์ ๋ถ ๋ค Instead of ์ ๋ถ. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah itโs more rhythmical. |
| Miseon: Right. |
| Hyunwoo: So letโs go to the grammar point of this lesson now. |
| Miseon: ๋ค. ๊ฐ์ด ๊ฐ์๋ค. |

| Miseon: Itโs -๋์? One of the most common sentence endings when asking a question in Korean. |
| Hyunwoo: As in the example. |
| Miseon: ์ด ๊น์น ๋ง์๋์? |
| Hyunwoo: Is this Kimchi good? |
| Miseon: So when asking a question in Korean, the most better way to ask something is adding ์/์ด/์ฌ์ at the end of the verb stem right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yes and this is very straightforward and direct. |
| Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. But in Korea, people like to use a more indirect way to ask question right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah because they donโt want to sound like hey, I want to know. |
| Miseon: Right I wanted right? Itโs too direct. |
| Hyunwoo: Too direct. |
| Miseon: So one of the ways to avoid doing that is to use the sentence ending -๋์. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and it has the nuance of actually asking oneself at the same time. |
| Miseon: So this ending -๋์ is similar to saying I wonder in English. |
| Hyunwoo: Right although the basic sentence ending for questions can almost always be used where -๋์ can be used. People still like to use -๋์. |
| Miseon: ๋ค. Because they hope to be less direct and accusing when asking a question. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah by using -๋์, one gets the feeling that the asking energy is divided into two directions. Halfway toward the other person and halfway toward oneself. |
| Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. Thatโs a nice way to explain it, ํ์ฐ์จ. |
| Hyunwoo: Thanks. All right. Then how do you construct a sentence using this structure? |
| Miseon: Verb stem plus ๋์. |
| Hyunwoo: Very simple and we are going to introduce one more sentence ending that has the same function in the next lesson but for now, this -๋์ is basically used with action verbs. |
| Miseon: So, for example, to do is ํ๋ค and it becomes ํ plus ๋์. So ํ๋์? |
| Hyunwoo: ํ๋์? And it means do you do or I wonder if you do or even if you could answer me, do you? |
| Miseon: And to read is ์ฝ๋ค, right? |
| Hyunwoo: Yes. |
| Miseon: And it is, ์ฝ plus ๋์. So it becomes ์ฝ๋์? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and it means, do you read? I wonder if you read. And this sentence ending ๋์ can be used with the past tense and also the honorific suffix ์. So letโs have a look at it together. How do you say to do? |
| Miseon: ํ๋ค |
| Hyunwoo: Past tense did. |
| Miseon: ํ๋ค |
| Hyunwoo: Great. Using ๋์ how do you say that? |
| Miseon: ํ๋์? |
| Hyunwoo: Yes and how do you say to read? |

| Hyunwoo: And how about past tense read? |

| Hyunwoo: And using ๋์? |
