Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! It’s your first house, and your first housewarming party in Korea! You really have no idea what you are doing, but your friends in Korea insisted that when you get a new home, you absolutely MUST have a housewarming party. However, now the phone has been ringing off the hook all day with your friends in Korea asking you what you need them to bring. Your mother calls to ask what you need for your new home and you happily reply in Korean, “I don’t need anything. All you have to do is bring yourself!” Moments later, your best friend calls and asks if you need her to be there early to help. You reply in Korean, “No, all you have to do is come prepared to eat!” Friend after friend calls and asks how to get to your house and what you need. You tell all of them, “All you have to do is drive straight at the traffic light, and all you have to do is bring yourself!” Finally, everyone arrives early with gifts in hand! Not knowing what to say, they tell you, “All you have to do is be quiet and enjoy these gifts in your new home!”

Can you make sample sentences using -기만 하면 되다? :)

What’s the difference between “just” and “all you have to….”

Example

All you have to do is practice. Just practice.

All you have to do is listen. Just listen.

All you have to do is follow me. Just follow me.

뭐?! 오기만 하면 됬어? 이렇게 많이 술을 사고 오지 말 걸 그랬어. Korean101을 잘 안 들으면 그렇게 실수하기 마련인데…ㅋㅋㅋ
“What?! All I had to do was to come (show up)? I shouldn’t have brought this much alcohol on my way here. It’s only natural that I make such a mistake if I don’t attentively listen to KC101.”

Beginner S4 #22 is “It Happens That” I Have to Go on a Korean Business Trip! It exists but is not showing up here. (It is listed in the Premium Learning Center, though). Therefore, the count of 25 lessons for S4 is correct. Good catch :)

I believe S4 #22 and #25 posts need to be re-categorized under ‘Beginner Season 4′ by the admins. The reason why users aren’t seeing them under the S4 categorized view is because they’re currently tagged under ‘Beginner Lessons’.

‘Just have to’, ‘Just’, and ‘All you have to do…’ all provide the same meaning in this lesson. In fact “have” can also be replaced with “need” and ‘just’ can be replaced with ‘only’. Of course in English “to need to” and “to have to” can have separate meanings but we don’t need to go into that amount of detail!

The bottom line is that all of them work for the structure -기만 하면 되다.

“I just(only) have(need) to study this and then I’m finished =
“All I have(need) to do is study this and then I’m finished” =
“나 이것 공부하기만 하면 되고 그런 다음에 긑난다.”

Q: Teacher, how do I become a better student?
Q: 선생님, 더 좋은 학생 되고 싶으면, 어떻게 해야 해요?
A: Just study. =
A: You just(only) have(need) to study. =
A: All you have(need) to do is study. =
A: 공부하기만 하면 돼.

However, for statements like: “Just Practice”, “Just listen”, and “Just follow me”, the word ‘Just’ can also give meaning to ‘merely’ or ‘only’ depending how you use it.

What do you mean next time? Just go!
“다음은 무슨 다음. 그냥 가!”

Q: What do you normally do on the weekends.
Q: 주말에 주로 뭐 해요?
A: I just clean up.
A: 그냥 청소해.

Since there doesn’t seem to be a lot of work to do today, just rest.
오늘은 일을 많이 없는 거 같으니까 그냥 쉬어라.

He just plays! (He only plays!)
“그는 놀기만 해요!”

I hope you find this helpful!
