Learn Korean with KoreanClass101.com! You are finally finished after a very busy week between your office in Korea and studying to speak Korean! But it’s all behind you now…and you are running late to meet your girlfriend! You excitedly rush to meet her apologizing as you throw your arms around her! You apologetically explain in Korean, “I am so sorry! I should have taken the subway!” Just thrilled to finally see something besides your face buried in Korean books and files, she replies in Korean, “It’s okay. Perhaps, I should have met you at your office!” You both agree it doesn’t matter now. All that matters now is spending some time together this weekend! Arriving at the movie theater in Seoul though, she asks if you remembered the tickets. Realizing things cannot get any worse, you apologize once more in Korean, “I should have bought tickets, but I forgot!” This is not going well. Maybe you can just take her to a lovely Korean dinner to make up for your forgetfulness. You offer to take her anywhere she wants to go in Korea for dinner - sky’s the limit! She regretfully replies, “I shouldn’t have eaten tonight before we met.” Something tells you that you are both going to have a lot of regrets about tonight…

Can you make sample sentences using -ㄹ/을 걸 그랬다?

Question about this lesson.
What is the difference between saying “should have” and shouldn’t have”?
Example.
I shouldn’t have drank alcohol last night.
I should have drank drank coke last night.

excellent grammar point

I shouldn’t have drank alcohol last night.
I should have drank drank coke last night.
The same structure is applied, with -지 말다 in the middle, which means “Don’t do ____”
I hope this helps!!

Great question and answer. Thanks.
“I was in charge of an urgent job, so I should have worked harder and I shouldn’t have met my friends last night. Ugh! Depending on my manager’s mood, there is a possibility I will end up getting fired tomorrow.“
Hopefully, it’s not packed with too many mistakes
…just trying to throw the learning from lessons 22 and 23 in the mix.

Great example
Hehe. Here’s what I think would sound even more natural!
“급한 일 맡았으니까 더 열심히 일 할 걸 그랬어. 그리고 어젯밤에 친구를 만나지 말 걸 그랬어. 오늘 완전 지각했어. 아휴. 과장님 기분이 안 좋으면, 내일 잘릴지도 몰라.”

Could you tell us which operating system and browser you are using?
You might have to upgrade your flash player and java player if you’ve had trouble with the voice recorder from the start, too. ^^

Ilsan is not a city. It’s a district in the suburb named Goyang City located northwest of Seoul.

Hi guys,
I’ve got a question. If in the negative, would -지 앓을 걸 그랬다 work as well? If so would it provide a different nuance?
Thanks!
Wednesday at 5:11 pm
Carlo
In the negative, you can say -
Wednesday at 5:31 pm
Ah whoops, I realized I had misspelled what I typed. I meant to say -
and 현우, thanks! Yes I understand that -지 말 걸 그랬다 can be used for the negative, but I’m also curious if saying -지 않을 걸 그랬다 works too.

Hehe.
I see.
-지 않을 걸 그랬다 doesn’t really work, ^^ and in reality people say 안 -ㄹ 걸 그랬다 and -지 말 걸 그랬다 more often ^^
ex)
with “가다”
Wednesday at 6:07 pm
Ah great :] Thanks for the quick reply, 현우
