INTRODUCTION
Brandon: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Brandon: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How much is this?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 이것은 얼마입니까? (Igeoseun eolmaimnikka?)
Brandon: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 이 (i)
Brandon: meaning “this” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 이(i)
Brandon: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 이(i)

Brandon: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 것(geot)
Brandon: meaning ‘thing’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 것(geot)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 것 (geot)

Brandon: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 이것 (igeot)
Brandon: And next..
Kyejin: 은 (eun)
Brandon: The subject marking particle.

Brandon: "It's 1,000 won.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Brandon: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kyejin: 천(cheon)
Brandon: means “1000.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 천(cheon)
Brandon: Now repeat
Kyejin: 천 (cheon)

Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 원 (won)
meaning “won”, the Korean currency unit.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 원 (won)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 원 (won)

Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 입니다
Brandon: the verb meaning ‘to be.’
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 입니다(imnida)
Brandon: Now repeat.

Brandon: Listen to the speaker say, “It's 1,000 won”, and then repeat.
Kyejin: 천원입니다 (cheonwonimnida)

Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 1,000 with 500.
Kyejin: 오백 (obaek)
Brandon: 500 (five hundreds)
Kyejin: (slow) 오백(obaek)
(regular) 오백(obaek)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 500
Kyejin: 오백원입니다. (Obaegwonimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 1,000 with 500. Say “It’s 500 won.’

Kyejin: 오백원입니다. (Obaegwonimnida.)
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 500 with 20,000.
Kyejin: 이만원 (imanwon)
Brandon: twenty thousand. The first word
Kyejin: 이(i)
Brandon: means 'two' and the next word
Kyejin: 만(man)
Brandon: means ‘ten thousand.’ So it literally means ‘two, ten thousands.’
Kyejin: (slow) 이만 (iman)
(regular) 이만 (iman)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 20,000.
Kyejin: 이만원입니다. (Imanwonimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 500 with 20,000. Say “It’s 20,000 won.”

Kyejin: 이만원입니다. (Imanwonimnida.)
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 20,000 with 10,000,000.
Kyejin: 천만 (cheonman)
Brandon: ten million.
Kyejin: (slow) 천만 (cheonman)
(regular) 천만 (cheonman)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 10,000,000.
Kyejin: 천만원입니다. (Cheonmanwonimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 20,000 with 10,000,000.
