Lesson Transcript

In today’s lesson, we will cover a phrase that will keep you strong and healthy letting other people know about your allergies is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today’s phrase, we will go over, I am allergic to and something. To start, we will need something that we are allergic to. Lately, I’ve been running into a lot of people who are allergic to peanuts. So let’s start with that. I am allergic to peanuts in Korean is, 땅콩에 알레르기 있어요 (ttangkonge allereugi isseoyo). One time slowly, it’s 땅콩에 알레르기 있어요 (ttangkonge allereugi isseoyo). And by syllable, 땅-콩-에 알-레-르-기 있-어-요 (ttang-kong-e al-le-reu-gi i-sseo-yo). The first word 땅콩 (ttangkong) means peanuts. One time slowly, it’s 땅콩 (ttangkong). What follows immediately after that is 에 (e), a particle which in this particular context roughly translates as to.
Together with peanuts, this would be 땅콩에 (ttangkonge). Next we have 알레르기 (allereugi). Now if you’ve guessed, this is allergy but Koreanized. One time slowly, it’s 알레르기 (allereugi). And lastly, we have 있어요 (isseoyo). This means to have. One time slowly, it’s 있어요 (isseoyo). Altogether the phrase is 땅콩에 알레르기 있어요 (tangkonge allereugi isseoyo). This literally translates into peanuts to allergy have. We can translate this as, I am allergic to peanuts or maybe a closer translation would be, I have an allergy to peanuts. Let’s try another one. This time, we will go with apples. The word for apple in Korean is 사과 (sagwa). Once again slowly, 사과 (sagwa). And by syllable, 사-과 (sa-gwa). To say I have an allergy to Apples, simply take the first phrase and replace peanuts 땅콩 (ttangkong) with apples 사과 (sagwa).
Our new phrase would be 사과에 알레르기 있어요 (sagwae allereugi isseoyo). One time slowly, it’s 사과에 알레르기 있어요 (sagwae allereugi isseoyo). And by syllable, 사-과-에 알-레-르-기 있-어-요 (sa-gwa-e al-le-reu-gi i-sseo-yo). What this literally translates into is, apples to allergy have. But this is understood as, I have an allergy to apples and as there are many different types of allergies out there, you can insert them into the phrase yourself. Just say what you are allergic to and then add 에 알레르기 있어요 (e allereugi isseyo). Let’s go over a few common allergies. Now, if you are allergic to cats, the word for cat is 고양이 (goyangi). Next we have the allergy for strawberries, 딸기 (ttalgi). If you are allergic to cats, you can say 고양이에 알레르기 있어요 (goyangie allereugi isseoyo). If you are allergic to strawberries, you can say 딸기에 알레르기 있어요 (ttalgie allereugi isseoyo). One more time slowly, it’s 딸기에 알레르기 있어요 (ttalgie allereugi isseoyo).
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
I am allergic to peanuts - 땅콩에 알레르기 있어요 (tangkonge allereugi isseoyo).
I am allergic to apples - 사과에 알레르기 있어요 (sagwae allereugi isseoyo).
