Lesson Transcript

In today’s lesson, we are going to take a trip to the post office. Now the post office in Korean is 우체국 (ucheguk). One time slowly, it’s 우체국 (ucheguk). Now by syllable, 우-체-국 (u-che-guk). And today, we are going to work on getting your postcards, letters and packages home. The expression to accomplish this is, I’d like to send this to and then the desired location. For today’s lesson, we will use New York. In Korean, I’d like to send this to New York is 이거 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (igeo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo). Kind of long hah! Let’s do it slowly. 이거 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (igeo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo). And now by syllable, 이-거 뉴-욕-으-로 보-내-고 싶-어-요 (i-geo nyu-yok-eu-ro bo-nae-go si-peo-yo). Let’s break down the components. The first word is 이거 (igeo) which means this. One time slowly, 이거 (igeo). The next word is 뉴욕 (nyuyok) which means New York. Let’s do that one more time, 뉴욕 (nyuyok). Next we have a particle 으로 (euro) which means to but this particle is used for places. Let’s break it down, 으로 (euro).
Together it’s 뉴욕으로 (nyuyogeuro). So to recap so far, we have 이거 뉴욕으로 (igeo nyuyogeuro) which literally means this New York to. Next in our phrase is 보내 (bonae). This means to send. And lastly we have 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo). This means I want to. 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo). So the second half of the phrase is 보내고 싶어요 (bonaego sipeoyo). This means send I want to. If we put them all together, we have 이거 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (igeo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo) which literally means, this New York to send I want or I would like to send this to New York. Now, we can build this up a bit by adding in the words for what we would like to send. For example, earlier we mentioned postcards, letters and packages. So let’s start with postcard. The word for postcard is 옆서 (yeopseo). One time slowly, 옆서 (yeopseo).
Now to insert it into the first phrase we had, and the first phrase was 이거 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (igeo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo). The first word this 이거 (igeo) we drop the last half of the word 거 (geo). So now, we just insert 옆서 (yeopseo) or postcard. Together, we would have 이 옆서 (i yeopseo) meaning this postcard. And this is the case with nouns. You can add 이 (i) to the front of noun to make it this noun. So here we have 이 옆서 (i yeopseo) meaning this postcard. Let’s do it slowly. 이 옆서 (i yeopseo). Together, the whole phrase would be 이 옆서 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (i yeopseo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo). The only thing that changes is 이거 (igeo) changes into 이 옆서 (i yeopseo). So now, let’s try letter which in Korean is 편지 (pyeonji). One time slowly it’s 편지 (pyeonji). So what do we do to make it this letter. We add 이 (i) to the front of the word 편지 (pyeonji). So together, the phrase would be 이 편지 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (i pyeonji nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo). Finally we have the word for package. In Korean, it’s 소포 (sopo). To make it this package, we put 이 in front, 이 소포 (i sopo). And if we insert it into the phrase, it would be 이 소포 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (i sopo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo).
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
I’d like to send this to New York - 이거 뉴욕으로 보내고 싶어요 (igeo nyuyogeuro bonaego sipeoyo).
This postcard - 이 옆서 (i yeopseo)
This letter - 이 편지 (i pyeonji)
This package - 이 소포 (i sopo)
All right, that’s going to do it for today.
