In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around you. Now, a dictionary is a great idea but don’t forget that you can use Korean to learn in a more fun and interactive way. In Korean, how do you say this in Korean is 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? One time slowly, 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? Now let’s take a look at the components. The first word we have is 한국말 (hangungmal) which is Korean. One time slowly, it’s 한국말 (hangungmal). And now by syllable, 한-국-말 (han-guk-mal). Next we have the particle 로 (ro) which is roughly translated to in. The next word we have is 어떻게 (eotteoke). This means how. One more time, it’s 어떻게 (eotteoke). And now by syllable 어-떡-해 (eo-tteok-hae). And the last part is, 말해요 (malhaeyo). This means say. One more time, it’s 말해요 (malhaeyo). And now by syllable, 말-해-요 (mal-hae-yo). Altogether we have 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)?
This literally means, Korean in how say or how do you say this in Korean. So when asking, you can do the rudimentary point, and this or in Korean 이거 (igeo). One time slowly, 이거 (igeo). So let’s place that in the front. 이거 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (igeo hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? One time slowly, 이거 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (igeo hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? And now by syllable, 이-거 한-국-말-로 어-떻-게 말-해-요 (i-geo han-guk-mal-lo eo-tteok-hae mal-hae-yo)? You can also replace this with an English word to keep the conversation moving along. Let’s ask how to say water. In Korean, how do you say water in Korean would be, ‘water’ 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (‘water’ hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? Notice how the word you want to know in this case water stays in front of the phrase. Let’s hear it again. ‘Water’ 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (‘water’ hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? One time slowly, it’s ‘water’ 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (‘water’ hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? And now by syllable, ‘water’ 한-국-말-로 어-떻-게 말-해-요 (‘water’ han-guk-mal-lo eo-tteok-hae mal-hae-yo)? This phrase literally means water in Korean how say. When it’s translated, it means, how do you say water in Korean.
Let’s try one more. Let’s ask, how to say rice. ‘Rice’ 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (‘rice’ hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? The English word you want to know once again stays in front of the phrase. ‘Rice’ 한국말로 어떻게 말해요 (‘rice’ hangungmallo eotteoke malhaeyo)? Don’t forget to say thanks when someone teaches you the word. 감사합니다 (gamsahamnida).
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
